Members quartermainefan
EXCLUSIVE: In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and has yet to meet Batman, who will not be part of the series. The Gordon character was introduced in 1939 in the very first Batman comic. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as Batman films and series, including in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman. Along with the Superman franchise, the Batman universe is probably the most prized DC property. http://www.deadline.com/2013/09/commissioner-gordon-fox-tv-series-drama/ This reeks of desperation. So basically this is going to be what, Kojak in comics? Comm Gordon meets The Night Stalker? If they had a compelling concept they wouldn't need Batman to inflate ratings (and he won't even be on the show). Maybe they can do a show where Alfred solves mysteries next. Members DRW50
At least it's going to focus on a different character. I wonder if we'll see Barbara.
Members SFK
Hmm, this sounds quaintly interesting, but I agree that dangling the never to be seen carrot of Batman is a bit odd. I'm reminded of that classic line from the Temptations movie, "Ain't nobody comin' to see you, (Commissioner Gordon)!" Why not do a show based on a more vivid and obscure D.C. Comic character with a more interesting backstory instead... This also sounds like a show that's going to take itself a little too seriously which is always a task when you're dealing with OTT comic villains. They're probably hoping for a stable of revolving guest villains in the dark and intense Ledger Joker mold. I think that approach could get a little exhausting.
