Wait, what? I missed that, must have been whaen I stepped out the room. I'm assuming to Cortlandt. Yes, unnecessary.

Mhm. When he got into the groove of making his speech to all the party-goers, he announced a name change to Caleb Cortlandt. Which is his third surname since joining the show. Opal was thrilled.

It kinda annoys me because in the little alternate AMC universe I have going on in my head,

Asher was going to reject Caleb as his father but totally accept the Cortlandts (and their money) as his family, thus changing him name to Asher Cortlandt (and not Cooney).

Interesting theory! But yeah, I always felt that in his dotage a part of Palmer grew to embrace his Pigeon Hollow roots and would have even considered going back to Cooney if he hadn't built his empire as Cortlandt. The name change just doesn't ring true for a dude like Caleb, and yes Caleb Cortlandt looks good on paper and on him when he's all power suited up for he boardroom and such, but Caleb doesn't seem like the type to give in to that sort of thing unless he explains that his motives are business rather than sentimentality-related.
