One thing that I did like though was getting ready for work on Monday morning and seeing that the Weekend Today Show gave Matthew their Olympic Highlight of the day.

UNITED States network NBC has apologised for its "homophobic" coverage of Australian gold medal winning diver Matthew Mitcham.

NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel issued a statement apologising for the network's "unintentional" failure to mention Mitcham is homosexual and has a long-term partner after gay groups complained commentators discussed the partners of other gold medallists after their win.

Opinion: Give sports prejudice the boot

“We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham’s story. We apologise for this unintentional omission,” Mr Zenkel is quoted as saying in Outsport.com.

Before the Olympics, Mitcham said he just wants to be known as a successful Australian diver, and his homosexuality should not be an issue.

This is what makes gays look bad IMO. (and yes, I am a gay male myself, not that it should matter) Making mountains out of molehills. The Olympics are not about the athletes' sexuality or personal lives. So what if they didn't mention he had a partner? Unless he or his partner are offended by it, there's no reason to make such a fuss about it. It's not as though they called him a faggot or joked about his sexuality. NEWS FLASH: not every gay & lesbian person wishes to broadcast their personal lives and we don't all allow our sexuality to take over and encompass our entire lives.

That is totally fantastic!! At one point NBC was a stalwart against mentioning the G word. I will take progress in whatever form it comes! (Oh, and I'm a gay female, not that it should matter.)

Since they make such a big deal about the partners of the straight athlestes they should have done the same with the gay ones.

Why? How big of a deal was being made? I'm all for equal rights, but I'm not for bitching and moaning about every questionable action of every non-gay human being on earth. There are more important issues concerning gays than the lack of mention of an Olympian's partner on NBC. IMO, it's a case of picking your battles and I don't think this particular battle was worth fighting.

Maybe reading this op-ed that accompanied one of the articles might make it more clear why groups in Oz objected, Bias in Sports
