Well, Janice is not the sweetest person in the world... But, never mind.

What I find fascinating in a terrifying fashion is how people can just drop a name like that and say "Hey, she's been there for ages, she can be a head writer!" It makes no sense! To me, at least. B) I was just going to write something else, but perhaps another time. :D

Sylph, you and I are in COMPLETE agreement about this. People should be based on the merits of their own work, and not who they've worked with. ALso, you can have an OUTSTANDING script writer, who would flop as a head writer. And some people who are fantastic breakdown writers turn out to be terrible script writers.

Also, don't forget there are a LOT of daytime writers who DON'T WANT TO BE HEAD WRITERS. Too much bullsh!t, too much nonsense, too many focus groups, and nobody who gives a cr@p about the art of crafting soap. I totally understand why greats like Curlee bailed. It's just too frustrating and depressing. A lot of people are happier just doing what they do best.

Another thing I forgot, and this is just my impression, possibly completely wrong: Bill Bell era writers are either really baaad or brilliant. So not all should be back just because at one point in time they worked with Bill. That's another non-criterion.

Not to be defending the friends of Latham, the thought about doing it makes me nauseous, but these people were just taught wrong by the Nazi woman - it's not an excuse, just an observation. They all have their faults, but hopefully if some of them stay, they can switch to Bill Bell mode and add some spin on it.

I believe that the vast majority should go, but no one is asking me.

It's also about how well writers can adapt through a transition. Any writer who could go from Latham's non-existent prep time and did everything she wanted to keep their jobs, then manage to switch to Bell's methodical planning, is probably somebody worth keeping. Every head writer has their weird quirks re: what they like and don't like, and many of these people are just trying to keep their jobs and prove they can work under ANY conditions. If some of the LML hires can flip that switch in their brains, then there's no reason they can't stay. I'm not so sure how "loyal" those people really are in the first place anyway. People are friends of themselves in the end. And they're just trying to hold on to their jobs, especially in these times. It's all about making the boss happy, because the alternative is unemployment.

And this reminds me of another sad thing: this board, and countless others, are filled with screenwriting newbies who are desperate to get a job in daytime. They naively believe that if they have a hell of a spec and superb writing samples, someone in the industry is going to hire them. Oh, knowledge is power, but ignorance is bliss.

These people, obviously, don't want quality - they want the job done. They don't care about your brilliant structuring, your fresh dialogue, your great story ideas. They need someone to thump out countless pages of whatever a week and keep the show alive.

Heart-breaking, but true. We're just going to see the same old people jump from show to show.

EXACTLY!!!!

"New" and "fresh" ideas are made all the time by the executives (see: GL), but in terms of the writers? They just want dependable worker bees.

OMG! Sylph and I are agreeing on everything today!!! Somebody call Hogan a hack or something! Before hell freezes over!

Racina has a connection to Y&R; he's close friends with Sally Sussman and was her co-headwriter on Generations. Sally is married to Anthony Morina, Y&R supervising producer. I wouldn't be surprised to see Sally eventually replace Maria or when Maria goes, have Sally become Hogan's co-head.
