Instead of forging new relationships, chaarcter driven, they're simply going for pure shockvalue and nothing else. That Wednesday episode that featured a gas making the residents of Springfield hook up with people they wouldn't normally hook up with (you know the episode where Remy and Lizzie had sex on a public restroom floor) reflects much of DK's tenure as Head Writer of this show.
