Are we sure that Global is cancelling Passions?

SpiritualJunkie, CH is owned by Global, its the CHUM channels that are going to be owned by CTVglobemedia (CTV). Here's the Canadian broadcasting media breakdown:

CBC (owned by the government): no soaps except for British imports like "Coronation Street".

CTV (owned by CTVglobemedia): B&B and GH. Used to air AW until its cancellation in '99. AW was Canada's #1 soap until its cancellation it was very big in the 70s/80s. Had PSNS until 2000.

Global (owned by CanWest Global): ATWT and day aheads of Y&R, DOOL and PSNS in most markets.

CH (owned by CanWest Global): GL but does air "same day" Y&R in the West market.

CityTV/A-Channel (owned by CHUM; CTVgm has placed a bid to purchase CHUM Ltd but is waiting approval. In event of purchase, CTVgm is said to keep CityTV and sell the A-Channels): AMC and OLTL...they've been airing AMC a lot longer than OLTL, OLTL was picked up after it won the emmy for best show a few years ago.

Also we do have a channel called NTV from the east which is known as "Canada's Superstation"...despite the horrible graphics, it does offer day aheads of Y&R and DOOL earlier in the day and they also air Passions. They mostly run the Global daytime programming with the excpetion of ATWT...but I bet when PSNS leaves, they'll fill the slot with ATWT since its the same timeslot.

Port Charles appears to be the only modern soap to not be simulcast on a Canadian network. Sunset Beach would air on CH in 90s with ATWT (before the move to Global after the CH purchase and emmy win).

So to recap:

CBC: Corontation Street

CTV: Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital

Global: Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives, As The World Turns, Passions

CH: Guiding Light (w/ Y&R in west)

CHUM: All My Children, One Life To Live

Ouch.

I think they will begin airing GL. CH is turning into E! Canada this Fall, so they're only keeping their primetime lineup...everything else will be E! stuff like Hollywood Story and E! News.

Here's what I predict will be the new Global daytime schedule in September:

1PM - DOOL

2PM - ATWT

3PM - GL

4:30 - Y&R

either that or DOOL will go day ahead in the eastern markets (its only day ahead in the Global central/west markets).

Rion, I know its hard to accept but I think your best bet will be downloading the episodes. I doubt any other Canadian network will pick it up, sorry.

Yeah, I knew CH and Global were under the same head company...I just got the whole CTV/Chum thing confused.

Is MuchMusic owned by Chum?

I didn't know there was a CBC station that airs GL! :o Where??

I'm confused...so you think their daytime lineup is going to change? I hope to God they keep GL and "Vanity Insanity".

That's my prediction, too.

Yes, MuchMusic is owned by CHUM. The CBC station that airs GL is an affiliate type. It's CHEX and is available in the durham region of Ontario, between Toronto and Ottawa. CHEX is owned by Corus (YTV, CMT Canada) and is affiliated with CBC. It's one of those "special" stations, like CH was before the Global takeover.

I am assuming that their lineup will change or else they'll have a massive 90 minute gap between ATWT and Y&R. It makes more sense to add a soap to replace the PSNS hour. Logically it would just make more sense for them to move GL over to the main network, that way it has ATWT as a lead in. I mostly know the history of the Global Ontario (Toronto) more than the other markets because that's where I'm based.

Here's the history of Global daytime since the mid/late 90s:

1990s-2000:

1pm - Days of our Lives (same day)

2pm - Non-Soap programming

3pm - General Hospital

4pm - Ready or Not

4:30 - Young and the Restless (day ahead)

2000:

1pm - DOOL

2pm - Passions

3pm - Non-Soap Programming

4pm - Ready or Not

4:30 - Y&R (day ahead)

Dec. 2000 - Sept. 2001:

2pm - Passions

3pm - Non-Soap Programming

3:30 - DOOL (day ahead)

4:30 - Y&R (day ahead)

Sept. 2001 - Present

1pm - DOOL (same day)

2pm - As The World Turns

3pm - Non-Soap Programming (although they did air Home & Away for a year)

3:30 - Passions (day ahead)

4:30 - Y&R

Sept. 2007 (Post PSNS):

1pm - DOOL

2pm - ATWT

3pm - GL

4pm - Non-Soap Programming

4:30 - Y&R

Toronto tried Days at 3:30 dayahead for a few months around 2000-2001. I don't think it worked out for them very well because they switched back very shortly after.

edit: NM, I didnt see your last post :)

How did you remember the exact schedule to the Global lineup?? :o That's amazing!

I was asking about the CH daytime lineup, though..not Global. Is CH's daytie schedule changing? I do hope that Global picks up GL but if that doesn't happen, as long as the show's on CH..I'm fine. I just hate all the news updates CBS has sometimes.

I'm not sure if CH's daytime schedule will change. What I do know is that come September, "CH" will become "E! Canada", so it will be branded like the US network and will take all the shows that are made by E! like True Hollywood Story and the Ryan Seacrest E! News that we usually watch on StarTV. It's pretty much the same thing that happened with CTV created the new MTV Canada last year, they stripped MuchMusic of all MTV content. The press release and commercial for E! Canada claimed they would still air the US primetime shows that they usually air, so I figure that the E! content they get will have to go in daytime and primetime.

The worst case scenario is having GL getting lost during this shuffle but with PSNS ending on Global, it stands a chance of getting way more viewers on Global since Global is available in all major markets.

The schedule has pretty much been the same if you think about it...just the GH/PSNS tweak and the addition of ATWT.

Back to Passions before we get in trouble by a certain someone...I actually do think that NBC is the best place to direct the worry. If NBC is still producing the show, then they'll still be interested in making money outside the US border.

So CH is no longer going to be owned by Global Canwest but by some US-based company? Is that right?? Ughh..that kinda sucks.

I think it isn't Canadian stations that should be targeted but American ones. MTV is full of campy drama...I can totally see Passions fitting right in with the other shows. But then again, that still doesn't help the Canadian viewer who has no access to MTV.

    • While I agree that Reeves is Jennifer, I honestly do prefer Cady McClain in the role, as I feel she had/has a wider range of acting capabilities than I feel Reeves has. It's the strength of an actor, ultimately, for me, regardless of how I feel about Reeves' political/social views (which I widely disagree with). Plus, not to mention, they costumed Reeves like an old-fashioned frumpy farm/Moron wife, while McClain had some fashion-forward moments.

    • Has anyone ever totted up how many women on GL slept with both father and son(s)? Reva gets a lot of crap for it but she's far from the only one: Claire Beth Blake Olivia Dina Did I miss anyone?  Also, did Reva ever sleep with Phillip? They always had some "closeness" thing, but I don't know if they ever actually did the deed. If they did, then Reva's the clear winner, with TWO families covered, lol!
    • I think Long was probably planning to have Claire suffer from Post Partum, but she left the writing staff shortly after Claire had Michelle so that element didn't get explored. And I always assumed that when Claire returned in the late 90s/early 00s.. that she was realizing that she messed up by not staying a part of Michelle's life and became resentful/bitter over her previous choices.  That was my theory.
