I think Pam in the miniseries and the first season is so different from what she became that it is difficult to image Linda in the role.  As I recall, Pam was a bit more antagonistic.  Miss Ellie was warning Sue Ellen to have a baby quickly, or Pam would have the first grandchild and solidify her place in the family.  In later seasons, both Pam and Miss Ellie became so sweet that butter wouldn't melt in their mouths.  However, in those early episodes they really played up Pam as being Digger's daughter and as a result she was more of a contrast to Sue Ellen and Miss Ellie (maybe a bit more like the character of Afton).

David Jacobs wanted to kill Bobby off early on and have scrappy Pam with her new stake in the family business go up against her in-laws. This is essentially what Bare Essence did with Genie Francis’ character, Tyger.

  2. As for what Jason initially found attractive about Sable besides her physical beauty, Connie has a line in one of her and Sable's many quarrels. She asks something to the effect of, "What happened to that sweet girl, Sabella Scott, that Jason brought home?" I think Los Angeles happened to her. I think the '80s happened to her. Sable is fiercely loving, loyal, and protective of her children and feels like she can't be any of these things unless she's ensured them with money and power. And to her, there is never enough of that. The Colbys are richer than G-d, yet Sable's royally pissed that Connie is leaving her money and shares to (presumed) fatherless Jeff and not spreading things out to include her and Jason's children. Jeff is her nephew and she has not a shred of warmth for the man, she calls her own sister's child "an outsider". Her love doesn't appear to extend beyond Jason and the kids. I'm guessing this love for her family was pure and unwarped in the beginning and slowly developed into something sinister.

  3. Married ... With Children is another one. These are shows with iconic themes, it just isn't right to be stripped of them.

And wow, I had totally forgotten all about that budget mess when they decided to make less episodes. What a dark time, the end was near.

Joan Copeland, Arthur Miller's sister who played Viki's aunt, Gwendolyn Lord Abbott has passed away at 99.

I dug up a real version of the 1989-90 closing lol. The recreation itself wasn’t bad until I heard the narrator.

Right! 😆 I sort of jumped in my seat when I heard that.

I have fond memories of WoST where I was SoapFoxKirby. Christmas morning was always such a treat with the videos posted under the tree. Good times.

@BetterForgottenThat’s very nice, clearly a labor of love.

  5. I loved the sequences of Sheila switching the labels with the classical music playing. Gave me Fatal Attraction vibes.

Sabotaging someone’s sobriety is no laughing matter, but KKL had me chuckling the way she played Brooke’s utter satisfaction with her “non-alcoholic champagne” (a term I’ve never heard in all my years of imbibing, I guess I always called the stuff sparkling cider). KKL looked great in that pink off the shoulder ensemble btw.

Zende is what the kids these days call a simp.

This opening with a new theme was left out. This was one of my personal favorites. It only last over a year though.

My favorite opening was the 1983-1985 followed by the 1975-1981 leaves opening and 3rd the 1990 opening I posted.

Yes! This is the one I was talking about.

Is this banner fan made? This is my neck of the woods, I am completely behind on Potomac so maybe I’ll dive into this instead.

  8. The only good thing about the OLCSTW opening sequence is the final G in Guiding and the L in Light creating that GL.

The original My Guiding Light is a beautiful theme. They had the pop version after that but also did an updated slow version which I liked. MGL and HOTL are my favorites.

As much as I loved Stephanie Beacham as Sable, I must admit that I don't think Sable was needed on the show.

Sable was the star of the show, The Colbys would have been a total snooze without her.

Kate O’Mara said it was down to her and Stephanie to play the Scott sisters but Kate chose to do a play instead and Frankie went to Katharine Ross. Stephanie vs. Kate would have been absolutely delicious and I don’t think the writers could have ignored Kate’s intrinsic qualities when writing for her version of Frankie. Stephanie says it was like going to kill Bambi when she had scenes tearing into Katharine. I imagine Stephanie and Kate would have been like two snakes swallowing one another. Kate could cut glass with those eyes, I just do not see her cowering to Sable. We saw this with Alexis and Caress, but how interesting would it have been to see it on The Colbys instead of this played out “good” sister vs. “bad” sister. How about two scheming sisters vying for Jason (of all people) and Kate playing everything just as written for Frankie but Kate being Kate bringing a dark complexity just behind her eyes. I am sure the writers wanted to stick to the Alexis vs. Krystle model, and certainly too many people think there has to be a clearly defined white hat and black hat so the audience knows who to root for, but alas.

I just saw on Facebook that it is the 31st anniversary of the "Hold on to Love" opening of GL (Debuted 1/2/91).

I re-watched it and it struck me that it is a remarkable piece of editing.  This was before digital logging and editing, so in order to get that iconic image of Harley dancing across the screen someone had to recall that moment from an episode, and splice it in so that it perfectly fit within the semicircle and  moved in the correct direction.  Bravo!

Just for contrast, there's an earlier disco opening of GL where the cast were specifically mugging straight to camera (Ed blocks a journalist camera, Josh oogles a woman's ankle, and Hillary spins to the disco beat) and it looked so corny.  It is no wonder that Hold on to Love became the standard bearer for soap openings.

It really is a stunning opening. I started watching GL when Marcy Walker held that final spot. It was such a pleasant surprise the first time I saw Harley bopping along the screen thanks to tape trade. There was an article about the opening which discussed how they had fewer cast members in it at first and more generic images like roses and pearls. It was an expensive and complicated bit of editing so they started simple in the beginning. There were eventually two versions of the opening as every contract cast member eventually made it in with A. day and B. day. It suffered in quality with some clunky editing. This happened with AMC’s falling pictures opening as well.

YES!!! I just assumed I missed something and they had a doctor come in and extubate him during the commercial break. 😂

Also, speaking of Jan, today they said that Shawn was taking her to Statesville. So, unless she ends up pregnant, I have no idea what the point of this little plot was.

I really hope she isn’t pregnant. How trite. I realize this is a supernatural storyline and the last thing I want to watch is Jan or the devil on trial, but the soaps need to treat non-consent more seriously. This goes back (as far as I remember) to the played for laughs plot on OLTL when bound and blindfolded David thought he was having sex with Blair but Dorian in a blonde wig tagged in and did the deed.

  12. Yes! I did an internal reading of Lear at STC a couple of months ago and I watched this to get reacquainted with the piece. It’s a marvelous, well-cast production. All of the soap connections are heaven.

The first time Miss Holly speaks, I thought of Paul Rauch and found myself getting angry. I tried to quickly shake that off, he wasn’t about to ruin this for me.

Didn't read much of the thread before posting, but let's not forget that Gina Tognoni dyed her hair red in order to become Phyllis but eventually stopped having to do that on "The Young and the Restless." Kristen Alderson had to dye her hair in order to separate herself from Starr when she became Kiki on "General Hospital," same for Sarah Brown (although by choice) when she became Claudia vs playing Carly years earlier. The use of a wig does change things slightly, but it's not unheard of to accommodate audience acceptance of an actor taking over a role they've been used to for years.

GT coloured her hair for Dinah as well. While I find KA’s wig oppressive (it literally looks heavy) I’d be lying if I said that it doesn’t give me the Taylor silhouette that makes such transitions easier to swallow. This is a believable recast. I don’t have to do the mental gymnastics to remind myself that this is the same character like I still sometimes do with TK.
