ALL: What about Bill Bell's writing made his stories and shows the top standard?
Am I the only one who keeps thinking it should say "gold standard"?! I've never heard the phrase "top standard", have you?

B&B: December 2023 Discussion Thread
It's quite interesting because Flannery wanted to retire literally YEARS before she did. But, she set herself up. She'd tell them how much she wanted to retire but also that she didn't want to hurt them so if they needed her to stay on, well, she would do that & postpone her retirement. Of course, then, they took advantage of that & always HAD TO HAVE her stay for just "awhile longer"! Ronn Moss inadvertently probably helped her climb out of the catch-22 she lived in for several years!

I think a lot about it was in the area of "grand experiment". With only 2 years, though, gotta be called an epic failure. I really enjoyed it, but very few seemed to.

DAYS: December 2023 Discussion Thread
Indeed, what in the heck is up with Paulina?!! She can't get awake. She can't stay awake. I haven't posted about current DAYS in days. My life has been crazy & the last crazy bit is going from a troublesome ancient computer to a brand new one. My current fascination is actually involving DAYS/Y&R where we have a solicitous husband & a vulnerable wife. The Great Victor Newman is mostly supportive words, small touches & fetching Nikki cups of tea. Somehow he has failed to notice that she is drinking like a fish. EJ on the other hand is like the sun, the moon & the stars to assist Nicole. Nicole said one sentence of regret about not decorating for the holidays. Somehow EJ managed to call the servants & give them orders so that the mansion was draped in Christmas finery by the time they got back from the Square. Nicole smiled. There are many other examples of EJ noticing his wife & actually doing things to try to ease her burden. Today in Salem was quite a day. So much going on. Chad & Steph actually broke it off. I was surprised. The scene was well-written & the actors were at the top of their games. Both cried. Billy Flynn is a good male crier. (I won't say this forever but just for now: Emmys 2023 he wuz robbed. Great pic from BTS with him & his lovely wife.) Stephanie immediately checked in with Harris. She really had a drunk black-out, remembering NOTHING of the night before. He was able to explain how drunk she was, that she vomited all over herself so he changed her into clean clothes & then put her in his bed. Also that nothing else happened! Only thing she didn't like is that Harris believes in total transparency with Ava. Somehow Sloan doesn't seem to realize that she left her child unattended in a pram in a city square. I think this is the first time Eric has wanted to either throttle her or give her a good shake! This is a first for them & it might lead somewhere. That was one. Two was disagreeing on how to act toward Nicole. Sloan went from demanding she be put in prison to saying she had asked her to babysit. But, she took advantage of a private moment to threaten her. Alex & Chanel had a brief sweet conversation where they gave a nod to their threesome & also covered messing things up with Allie. Blessedly there was no Leo.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
Here, my experience is so different but I'm almost positive that I watched the show in real time & you have only seen it on YouTube. I was suitably entranced with both Bill & Mickey. Marie & her love for Alex & her vocation were galvanizing stories to me. Addie was such a huge character. Loved the actress. She got in Julie's way with Doug so often & irritatingly. Then of course her illness, being Hope's mother, on & on. Sandy & Jessica, I gotta give you those two. But teen Melissa was huge. Lisa Trusel could walk in the room right now & I would want to sit & talk to her. The teens that made up so much story were Melissa & Hope & Jenn. Mike was strongly written through three actors - Wesley Eure, Michael T. Weiss & Roark Critchlow. Scott was also well played by different people. What made the difference with these guys was to me the writing & they all had it in spades. Doug & Julie are to me, huge. SSH, of course, was my first soap crush. I can't say enough about them most of the time that they are present. Here, Maggie is very important. Tom & Alice were also important. Lots of story there. I love that Peter Reckell in adlib mode came up with both Fancy Face & Mrs. H. So to me the Hortons are not issues of nostalgia, but actual show history.

2023 Daytime Emmys Live Discussion Thread
In May 1999 on the night that Susan Lucci finally won, it had been the last official workday out in Brooklyn at Another World. At the Emmys that night the show made no mention of Another World. From the mic Linda Dano mentioned the show. From the mic Stephen Schnetzer mentioned the show. Then, at the mic, accepting for Best Show, with her time ticking away, FIRST Wendy Riche said, "God bless everyone from Another World." Then she went on with her acceptance speech. Many of us will NEVER forget this moment of class & grace. And, it goes without saying that there should never be an official awards show that does not recognize any show that is leaving the fold at that time! Gold Derby let me know how I did. (Oy) Donna L. And may I just say - not for the first time - that those of you who never developed a twitter interest, just thank your lucky stars. The longer Musk has it in his control & the more the world becomes contentious & with Musk trying to make the mathematics (algorithm) bring people against each other into each other's orbits. .... Sheesh. And, then it breaks often too!

Loving/The City Discussion Thread
All of my life I have heard of soap fans who were interested in older people on shows when they were teens. It was certainly true of us when I was a teen. But the point was that we were theoretically interested in everyone. Age didn't matter. Looks, voice, character traits, quirkiness, these things mattered, on 17 yr old & on 45 yr olds & even grandparents!

Well, in a way it was coveted because it's what they got. But they had some difficulty figuring out how to monetize it. It's not what they initially wanted. But, that's because they initially wanted everything. They thought he was going to be able to deliver all demos! Attract almost everyone who would watch TV. From 12 to 45, although they'd have done 12 to 36, okay. NBC execs were in total shock. They shook that off though & got to work. That is one time I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall.
