LOL, yes that was me who said Tom looked possessed. And Barbara, don't get me started. She deserved this Erica Kane slap and more.

Early Babs reminded me of Sigourney Weaver’s character in Working Girl.

  2. Tom was the epitome of a “mean drunk” -
and I concur with the person who said he appeared possessed when his rage came out.

The mediocre Deidre Hall should’ve taken notes to appear more convincing.

    But back to Tom....

He was also a devout Catholic, who balked at his wife taking contraceptives because she was career-oriented and didn’t want to be a mother at that time.

Did he even know about Erica’s early ‘70s abortion??!!
I think not, as he probably would’ve stoned Miss Kane to death if he knew!!

(Btw, I liked the Barbara character.
Yeah, she should’ve walked little Laura across the street, especially considering it was evening hours.... but she had a deadline on that goddamn report!!)

    Whose the babe at 17:30?

Seems to be Travis & Jackson’s Southern aunt.

The Montgomery Family was Southern, I believe (the Carolinas??), yet Travis and Jack never had Southern accents that I recall.

The whole "Sally the Waitress" and meeting Dave story, along with Travis faking a kidnapping for insurance, was stuff that happened during the writers strike. I'm not sure how much of that was originally planned out by Broderick.

    Interesting.

So was Travis faking his amnesia, too??

I thought a highlight during this period were Natalie & Jeremy - finally together & happy.

It was so short-lived, though, with the introduction of psycho Marissa.

I feel Natalie was definitely Jeremy’s best female partner.

What in the hell is the "Mystery of Cobbler's Island"?

A “haunted” island in the Pacific NW that was owned by Goldie Kane, I believe.

It was where Erica was taken to be murdered by a hypnotized Silver (under Dr. Lazarre).

I just read that Robert Milli, who played the second Lars Bogart, quit All My Children because he objected to his character who was going to be exposed as a WWII war criminal, with a collection of stolen German art, who later escaped to South America.  Which caused a pause in the story right before November sweeps in order to hire another actor.

Ironically, he was replaced by Jack Betts, who had just left the role of Louis St. George on Another World, a WWII war criminal with a stolen art collection, and was best known in daytime for playing Dr. Ivan Kipling on One Life to Live, a criminal who escaped to South America.  Apparently, Mr. Betts was unconcerned about type casting.

Perhaps he was irked because they continuously referred to Lars as a “Nazi”??

    ”WWII war criminal” sounds nicer.

Janet on AMC was going to plant a bomb, but those scenes was edited out after the Oklahoma City bombing,

I often wonder if the revision saved the Janet character..??

How can a person (who’s already committed kidnappings, identity theft, murder, numerous attempted murders, ect.) come back from bombing a public event??

(ETA: Of course, years later, she bombed Erica Kane’s Mardi Gras Ball)

Yes. Walt Willey said in an interview a few years later that around this time he decided to get into shape and lost a lot of weight. As a result, they dropped the storyline.

I thought he looked better with some weight on.

The weight loss really aged him aesthetically.

Anyway, that seems like a silly reason to drop the heart storyline.

”Fit” people can have heart disease, too.

    (Look at Susan Lucci!!)

  7. I don’t recall if Kendall’s odd choice of the name ‘Spike’ was ever explained.... but perhaps it was.

I like the “odd celebrity offspring names” angle.... but Erica is the celebrity, not Kendall.

Erica got the name ‘Bianca’ from the character in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew (which Pine Valley High School was performing at the time).
To honor that, Bianca got the name ‘Miranda’ for her daughter from the character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

  8. I was trying to find the delicious, heated (and hilarious) scene of Nurse Gloria discovering Erica attempting to steal drugs from Dr. Kinder’s office - “And RED means STOP, and GREEN means GO, and LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET!!” - but came across this instead (quite relevant to our discussion)....

The best soaps are the slow-moving ones with a pace that is true to life, IMO. Once you start getting wrapped up in the idiotic sci-fi and action/adventure crap, I'm out.

    Agreed.

That’s one of the main reasons All My Children was always my favorite.

By and large, AMC shied away from those types of stories.

The characters were so strong that they rarely had to degrade the show with those cheap tricks.

  10. Speaking of Gloria - I loved her and felt she should’ve lasted longer (into the 2000s).

Also, that Gloria “profile” doesn’t seem 100% accurate or as detailed as it should be.

I’m almost certain Gloria gave birth to the premature Anna Claire in ‘94 (not ‘95), but I could be wrong.

And it doesn’t mention her religious fanatic mother (a la Carrie), which really added depth to her character, nor her suicide attempt (overdosing on pills in her car, with Erica discovering her and summoning help).

  11. On All My Children I can recall a few attempted suicides (and a staged attempted suicide).

•There is a scene of Janet (after being rejected by Trevor after showing up naked to the boat house in an effort to seduce him) in one of the Chandler Mansion bathrooms.

She breaks a glass and is shown picking up one of the shards and motioning it on her wrist..... before the mirror gives her the idea to assume Natalie’s identity.

Ceara, incest victim, attempts suicide by jumping from a bridge into the river.
She sees her father’s face in the river water, taunting her.
She is talked out of jumping by Jeremy and Erica, who show up in the nick of time.

Ceara and Erica become friendly after this.

Gloria, who had an abusive, religious fanatic mother (a la Carrie), had been raped by Will Cortlandt, and later gave birth to a grossly premature baby who died by Adam, attempted suicide with pills and passed out in her car in the Chandler Mansion driveway.

Her head fell to the horn, alerting Erica (again to the rescue) who traveled to the Mansion on business.

Kendall (SMG) stages a suicide attempt with pills in an effort to gain sympathy (pretty much everyone has turned on her at this point, besides maybe Dixie’s brother Del).

Kendall is rushed to PVH, where Erica is alerted and seems somewhat sympathetic.... before Kendall’s cover is blown.
