The Doctors Discussion Thread
It was after 3 pm eastern, so over an hour, and the chat is supposed to be only that long. And since Alan didn't have anything to announce it did end awkwardly, he could have thanked everyone for coming and said due to the time we can end. Jada and Liz were both friends with David, but their relationships and perceptions were very different. I think if Liz didn't know David was in therapy for years that she'd be stunned. Kind of a big thing to hear about someone you worked with for decades, and never knew that about them. And perhaps Liz was surprised Jada was so candid, but I appreciated that. From some statements read elsewhere it sounded like David was from the midwest, and Irish Catholic and born in the 1930s. Thinking about that, I could absolutely understand why, as his life would have been so much easier if he was straight or had been willing/able to have a sham of a relationship to pass like a good amount of people in the business (and in general) did decades ago. You can find happiness, or even come to terms in many ways with ones issues, but doesn't mean that you can't have some bouts of self-doubt or wonder what if. ETA: Monika I agree with you, I wish Jennifer could be helping at least to ask the questions if she didn't want to be on screen during the chat, as she does know the stories and the actors for the years that RTV has aired the show. And the Friday thing, I used PTO to watch this afternoon, so I get what you mean.

I finally got my mail ballot yesterday. I am not in Texas and we only have 1 Dropbox location in my county.

I enjoyed the George Gray version more than this new version. I liked the shorter 30 minute format.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
Tom being divorced was part of the character’s backstory. he lied to his wife telling her that Huntington’s disease ran in his family and convinced her to abort their baby so the child would not have the illness. It was a lie as he was not a carrier and only worried he would abuse their child if it lived and did not want to be a parent.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
That story about the soap that shall not be named is horrifying mikelyons though not surprising. It seems like daytime has been like that for ages if you are in and have a strong ally than you can work, otherwise not. The person who blocked you, argh. I was told decades ago, if someone is seen as too much of a "fan" of a particular program it was more difficult to even get an internship interview, so it seems like they really appreciate people who are ignorant. Of course, if one hires that way in a few months you will probably need someone else. With the writers' room, well again many hires are people who just want to hold on to their jobs, and go from show to show, so the lack of any diversity is not a shock. Also for the most part I doubt they actually have a room, correct?

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I barely follow anyone who acts on soaps on Twitter and I know a few that are in the wrong. That said many want proof and give benefit of doubt again and again. If only due to cognitive dissonance and if they knew it for sure it would make watching that show or those people difficult.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
For a few episodes in the early 90s someone that wasn’t Maeve played Vanessa there was no reason known at the time behind that. But Bryan Buffington remembered that ofc as it was odd it was not Maeve. In the early 80s when Anna Stuart filled in I believe that was when Maeve took an extended maternity leave. At that time GL being produced by Allen Potter who gave Anna her first job at The Doctors meant that she was known. later on when Maeve was not full time at GL I can see someone suggesting that if Maeve could not be a regular having the part recast may be a good idea.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I think the list thing has to do with getting written proof someone is behaving badly. Also by using a picture of Michael B Jordan who was on AMC and barely written for who now leads in movies is telling. People are getting receipts of this and even if deleted on their feed it would not be lost.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
The reason people couldn't stand the Maryanne plot was it rewrote the backstory for many of the characters as it took place in 1977. We know what Ed and Alan looked like (even if you weren't watching in the 70s, they were already in Springfield by that time.) Alan was raising Philip and president of Spaulding Enterprises, he was not that young, same with Ed, he was raising Freddie and Chrissy aka Rick and Blake and was already a qualified doctor and not on his first marriage. Billy was off screen in Tulsa, raising Mindy, Josh would have been starting or already at Berkley in CA, and much younger than the rest. Buzz though was thought to have died in Vietnam during the war, which was already over prior to 1977. When Buzz returned to Springfield in 1993 NO one recognized him (not Ed or Billy who were regulars at the time). Billy and Buzz were in the same story and Billy was married to Nadine who was still technically Buzz's wife as he hadn't died, so why would have Billy ever married Nadine if he knew Buzz was alive. The parts about Ben I agree with you that made me so upset.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
If the special guest is EW, I think that would be insane, considering Maureen and Jerry's involvement, how Robert Newman has basically panned Peapack or literally doesn't want to talk about it, and Zimmer spoke negatively about in her book. It would make sense to invite someone that everyone invited actually had a good working relationship with (and not a boss). This isn't a decade ago and a Ryan's Hope chat that had alum actors with creator/writer Claire Labine. With the ATWT livestream, I am surprised that more haven't watched, but perhaps how you have to go to the specific youtube page is a deterrent. What would be cool is if they had clipped a couple of best moments and have the ATWT peeps tweet them to see how much reaction happened.

I liked when they started talking about books, and I realized that I have either read or own them. Who knew I had a similar reading taste to people on ATWT. At least this was a fun way to spend an hour.

Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
They are doing that if people are infected but not seriously ill, they are allowed to stay together. If someone gets much more seriously ill, they separate at that point only. Not sure if I get it, but that's what is going on... What is bad is a lot of places you are told you aren't allowed to telecommute and you must go into work or not get paid. If a private business is mandated to close, they don't have to pay you and if you don't have any vacation time, you are out of luck. And if you aren't sick now and do get sick later, and use your time, there is no safety net beyond not having to pay for the test - they haven't done anything like give temporary unemployment due to issues with the illness. And on top of that while it is good that schools are closing, if you can''t work from home, you may bring it back to the kids, or even worse the kids' carers who probably are grandparents who are over 60. It is a mess.

Toni's father was named Paulo, (Italian loved Opera was an extra at the Met). Luke's birth name was Luke, as that is what his mother called him. Eventually everyone started calling him Luke instead of his previously used nickname Lew - I blame Eleanor.

I didn't think Bryant Park had a pond, but I wouldn't recall what it looked like at that time as I was younger than Michael Paul sorry just Paul. The kid is smart enough to want to change his name, let's see if that sticks.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I thought Guiding Light first was on the radio out of Chicago, and then I thought the Schemering said it was in California, before it made its way to the NYC. I wonder if the location changes for the broadcasts, (as it was radio in those days) was influenced by the real life changes behind the scenes. (Does anyone know the timeline of Selby Flats to Five Points to Springfield?)

As The World Turns Full Episode List
I was wondering does the above listing include Canadian stations? As far as I know Coronation Street and Crown Court, which are both UK shows were only seen by US audiences if they lived near the Canadian border. This could explain the weirdness with ATWT (or it could be a typo), - also it is possible that the 1:30 pm airing was a rerun or rather a delayed airing of the previous Friday's episode- (of course this tech may not have existed in the mid-70s) to do this, so I can't be certain.
