Wasn't she much less known than Matt Smith at the time?

Yeah. I get it. Someone mentioned if the Queen were played by, say, Emilia Clarke, she would have earned more than Matt Smith based on her GoT fame. It’s just the way the machine works. Same with Michelle Williams. She’s Oscar bait. She doesn’t have a track record of leading blockbuster films, even ones as empty as the Transformers movies.

However, Claire should have gotten a second season bump after her first season award recognition. Her fame exceeds his by leagues at the point, so she should have renegotiated for more.

  2. CSN knocks out Svitolina. Elina plays lights out at exhos and small events but can’t get it up when it matters.

Verdasco. SMDH. He played so stupidly against Fritz. How do you beat Grigor and just flop like this against a far lesser talent?

He was on Y&R a few years back as a baddie. He’s a great actor, but I think he looks a bit older than PB even though they are around the same age. If Hunt Block were a more demonstrative actor, I think he’d be perfect. Lane Davies, if he shed his current “man of the woods” look, has the right level of swagger and erudition.

I think we’ll be prying Jack Abbott out of Peter Bergman’s cold dead hands in any case...

Christopher Eccleston tells The Guardian the BBC blacklisted him.

I saw that. There were a lot of rumors at the time that he was “difficult,” which seem to have faded over the years. He and Matt Smith are still my favorite Doctors of the modern era.

  5. It’s sad to see Novak struggling, but I remember just three or four years ago people writing Roger off. So you never know. (Yes, I understand Roger has a less physically taxing style of play, but that didn’t change the premature verdicts on his career.) I question coming back so quickly after surgery, but I think he does need some match reps.

Way to go for Yuki Bhambri beating Pouille.

Oh ok. That wasn’t “heated” at all. I think Rothenberg had only seen the transcript.  (EDIT: he says he heard the audio.) While I don’t think that the racialized conclusions people are jumping to are justified (typical Twitter), he was wrong and Andy Roddick was right about his “clickbait” journalism.

Ben Rothenburg is getting his ass handed to him from all fronts for labeling Serena's exchange with a reporter as heated when it was anything but!

    Get him!

    Did they post the audio?

But for real...when are we gonna talk about Bartoli :o

I'm not size shaming and I'm super happy she's no longer starving herself, but on what tour is she going to play with that kind of weight?!  I'm speaking strictly from an athletic POV!

Yeah. I was sort of concerned when I saw her play Serena at the Tiebreak Tens. You’d think she’d take a bit more time to get a bit fitter before returning. We always talk about Taylor Townsend and whether she’d have more success on tour if she were a bit sleeker. It’s hard to dance around stuff like that, especially with the gendered lens through which we look at someone’s body.

Wow at Danielle Collins taking out Madison Keys. The young American women are bringing it early on.

  9. For me, personally, as someone repulsed and disgusted by Trump, I’m sick of hearing about him. I have fortunately kicked a longtime cable news addiction because the networks no longer cover news that isn’t connected to Trump and his latest distraction. I don’t want to see it in the pop culture I consume either, even if it’s part of “The Resistance.” Especially if it’s done as poorly as W&G did it in the premiere.

I do think the show has suffered creatively this season. There was really nothing to sustain the early momentum. The odd scheduling didn’t help.

The Good Place has a following among some prominent conservatives, which probably helps their numbers along with the other fans (of Kristen Bell, of NBC sitcoms, what have you). W&G was a show of 15-20 years ago, and focusing so much on Trump early on likely didn't help matters either.

Yeah, having the premiere so focused on Trump was ill-advised IMO. The episode with Will and Jack feeling old and out of place at the gay bar was much funnier, but I understand that they wanted an episode with the four of them together.

  11. I wonder how much of a platform The Talk will provide for Roseanne given that it’s on a different network. Granted, talk shows promote series on competing networks all the time, but it will be interesting to watch. I’m sure Sara Gilbert won’t miss doing The View.

I have a feeling Darlene in this reboot will be a lot more like how Sara Gilbert is in real life.. as opposed to how Darlene in the original series was like a complete 180 from Sara Gilbert in real life..imho.

Darlene was something of a dour wisecracker if I remember. SG comes across as somewhat cerebral and dry on The Talk (not that it’s a bad thing - I think she really tells it like it is while seeing both sides of an issue).

I feel like it was inevitable once the luster of the revival diminished. I'm willing to bet the same thing happens to ABC's revival of Roseanne.

Even the original run of W&G was not the sustainable ratings hit it's now somehow now perceived to be (and the show didn't fare that well in local syndication, and floated around for years on cable). I

t has a passionate/loyal audience, and that's enough to keep shows on the air in this present broadcast climate.

And apparently they all took steep pay cuts to do the show. Hey, it’s not like they were setting Hollywood on fire. But I thought the show might settle in the mid-1s in the demo, but it’s poised to go fractional. I know The Good Place had a lot of buzz this season, but for a show like that to settle at a number better than old-school comfort food like W&G sort of surprises me.

  13. This show has dropped TWO full points in the demo since its season premiere and is now getting the same ratings as Superstore (a 1.0). Scandal is now  outrating it in the time slot.

Way not to capitalize on buzz and renewed interest through wonky scheduling, NBC.
