  1. I’ve always struggled to accept recasts, even on daytime. (That is, unless the recast is the first performer I saw in a role.) Something is always lost unless the original actor was incompetent. It’s easier for me to think of a recast as a new character.

But interestingly, now that I think of it, Jamal would be the easiest major character in that cast to replace IMO. Andre would be tough with the balance of buttoned-up corporate dude and mental illness that Trai navigates so well, and Hakeem is basically Bryshere.

  2. My favorite Bradley Cooper performances have all been in David O’Russell movies, which I know are polarizing. I guess DOR is able to split the difference between Bradley’s Hangover stuff and his more actorly ambitions.

  3. I think about how Andy Whitfield died during Spartacus. There are those cases when the only answer with a lead character is to recast or shut the whole production down. You can’t do Spartacus without Spartacus. But I wonder if the show would have continued if Whitfield died after a Season 3 or 4 instead of Season 1. Probably not. Starz et al would have probably said, we have enough in the bank to exploit in terms of licensing, so let’s call it a day. I’m sure a lot of factors come into play.

I am glad Mackie won. I prefer much more than Kei. If Delpo skips Acaculco he will lose 500 points....He should've not played this week. And he has 360 points to defend in Miami besides the 1000 Indian Wells points.

    What’s Mackie’s connection to Kei?

Delpo losing 500 wouldn’t hurt him that much. He’s in no immediate danger of slipping out of the top 10.

Again, it's something where if the show is going to wind down soon I wouldn't recast, just write him out. But if they apparently intend to continue indefinitely, then yeah, go for it.

    That is the question...

As someone whose family migrated to another country whose siblings are made up of us who were born in the U.S. and elsewhere but have been raised here, I can tell you that identity and national affinity is a lot more complex than people might realize.

Often it cannot be reduced to an "either (this) or (that)" proposition.

It’s privilege to feel an uncomplicated relationship to “nationality.”

  7. I can see both sides. At the end of the day, the show has totally burned itself out, but I do see how vital Jamal is/was in showing what an unapologetically gay black man could look like to an audience who’ve only known black gay men in a certain way. I’m sure Lee sees the show as a vessel to deliver that image.

Still, this is way more ink than Empire has had since that surprisingly huge first season (where it felt like every black person in the country watched). For a lot of people, this story’s a reminder that the show’s still airing.

  8. I think primetime viewers are just not accustomed to recasts. They form a stronger bond to a character “as played by so-and-so” instead of a character who is just part of a larger whole. It’s certainly easier on a show with a massive canvas like GoT to recast a secondary character like Daario, but I doubt they’d ever have recast Cersei, Tyrion, or even Sansa unless it was *very* early on. Fans would have rioted. Empire still has a relatively tight ensemble, so a new actor in a pivotal role can really throw off the energy.
