It can't be that they rushed the end of the story because of the poor response to Jarly because the show is taped, what?, six weeks in advance? And they were not trying to sell us Jarly as real six weeks ago (which is another thing that is appalling about the way this is being wrapped up). I don't know what the story is behind the obvious interference and what Frank V's motives would be but this is completely irrational. Besides I don't see how the audience hating Jarly justifies not giving us proper dramatics when Sonny comes home even if they decided to not have them have sex. There was plenty of conflict and complications to be had even without the "Are Jarly in love" aspect. We were speculating about it long before they tried to tell us these two were developing feelings for each other. Just Sonny thinking they might have would be enough

I personally liked a lot of the material in the spring. I thought it was soapy. But yeah this is a disaster and I am furious I defended them for so long in the in-hindsight-naive belief they had a fun twist up their sleeves. When you said that in the spoiler thread a couple of weeks back, I wrote a response detailing why I disagreed because I thought the material earlier this year was soapy. But yep. I have to bow now. I was wrong; you are right. I am stunned by how they could weave such a long story and end it with a big ball of nothing, no drama, no twist, no payoff. Unbelievable. I tried to forgive the Willow/Chase letdown of a reveal and the terrible followup to the Peter/Maxie reveal with excuses based on how unpopular the characters were but there is NO excuse for not wringing as much drama out of the Sonny mess. I hate Sonny and Jason but they are story drivers. This should have been dynamite.

This is an absolute disgrace. I defended this story for a year because I thought they payoff would be spectacular. I was wrong. If this is as far as it goes this was a limp noodle. And there is no question in my mind that this is a shift driven by something else than the writers. No way was this the plan all along. This feels rushed and lazy.

I feel Days is starting to do the B&B thing where they play stories by cycles of episodes instead of balancing the stories. We get one or two stories dominating non-stop for a week and then a different story dominating the next week instead of them being played concurrently or a balance of A-story front-burner and a couple of B stories moving on the sides.

Visit that gave us "She's a gold digger, she's a social climber, she's a tramp..."

I cannot tell you how much I hope this is where this is all going.

Well since they didn't go with the tried-and-true "bursting through the church doors during the wedding" soap reveal, I imagine Sonny walking in Jarly humping is the next most dramatic re-entry I can think of. Question would be: is the story going to have them see him too or is he going to be so upset about it that he is going to hide and stew? I still think November sweeps ought to be the timing at which we should expect Carly to finally see Sonny alive so if I am right we still have five weeks of twists to kill.

I am in the minority but as wonderful as NF was, I hated comic-relief Cecile.

I would be interested in an actual "scientific" study of the pace at which they recast - although I dont know what the proper criteria be since I don't think simply counting without taking other factors into account would be accurate - but I am pretty certain SB would be higher than most other soaps. You had a combination of very high turnover of B- and C- level characters and high recast rate of A-level characters in only eight years (that's crucial: four CCs, three Masons, three Kellys wouldn't ring as bad over 30 years) you really get a really fast pace of recasts at least, and a high rate probably.

Primetime comedies seem to be comfortable doing it more than dramas. I have been digging through my brain to think of a primetime soap that may have done it and I can only think of The OC and Dallas (Jenna). And the latter was recast from an originally one-episode role so it is obviously not the same as recasting a full-on character.

It is a mystery to me indeed and I have to consider the possibility. But I think it is also a matter of habit. People watch the show and, in truth, there is nothing that would make you so angry that you'd want to turn off the TV. Mediocre but passable is easy enough to keep on if you are a creature of habit, which would be the case with Y&R older demographics. Maybe Y&R are more inelastic than other shows? I am just speculating. Maybe there are indeed people who think this is fine.

She got a decent last episode as far as these things go. But that clearly indicated that even if she didn't know, THEY knew she wasn't coming back.

I may be wrong but I doubt it. First she was never a sentimental kind of person and mentioned several times that her roles were just that. I don't think she felt the kind of emotional connection with the show that made someone like Julianne Moore want to go back. Also considering how much she said she regretted doing her Myrna stint on GH, that she did just for the money, I don't think even good money (and doubtful good money would have been available even if PG had said yes) would have convinced her. Would have been fun though although considering the level of judgement at NBC daytime at that time, we would have would have had a scene of her with the gorilla.

The latter point definitely plays. But B&B still manages to get peaks here and there. Sheila's return created a lot of buzz for a week or so. I do see talk of the cuckold story even if it is mostly in the WTF type. Y&R online activity is dead because Y&R is creatively in a prolonged coma. Nothing is happening. It is not even bad enough to be angry at. It is just flatlining and has been for a while. It is astonishing. I don't recall any soap ever having such a long period of completely unremarkable nothingness. Usually when a show is poorly written there are islands of in-your-face awfulness to go along with the boring parts and people talk about how awful they are. Here it is just nothing.

That line about now that he has a memory back they can be together without lies that comes off as SO pathetic with Watros would probably have been manic and jokey with Stafford. Even giving her benefit of the doubt she might have pleasantly surprised us (she has had moments in her career after all) I am glad Cynthia is in the role for this storyline.

I'd agree that's when things become irreversible but I am watching some 1995 episodes on YouTube and it was already pretty damn rough. I think she wanted to go back to Australia.

It would have been a shame to cancel AW in 1993. It had just come out of a great run of several years and the potential was there. It was still salvageable. Unfortunately things went irreversibly wrong very fast in the following couple of years and by 1995 it was countdown to death.

Am I wrong in thinking that Matt Crane came back because they had seen the writing on the wall and he simply wanted to wrap up the character for sentimental reasons rather than expecting good story? I have to say I never bought Lila with any the Matts. It is weird because she was actually just three years older than MC and yet she came off older to me. Gorgeous, mind you, but still a bit older than him (or BG). This is John's last episode He gets a scene that feels like closure with Felicia but no sense it is his last scene. For a character that had been so pivotal for a decade, it was so insulting. I mean, it would have cost them nothing to have him visit Josie and mention he wanted to visit Sharlene and just leave us to hope they might have reconnected. They didn't even have to write it. Just give us a throwaway line Thinking about all they trashed for Felicia/John only to end it this lackadaisical way pisses me off.

Reading the comments he has definitely some fans who in theory might be willing to. But I am more skeptical whether they will be able to. It is a lot of people for a lot of young people! There is no shame in getting a real job. Just saying that out loud in case someone who this might be relevant to reads this.

The 90s were a weird time.

I try not to bring up Annie too often because I don't think it is fair to a talented actor*ress to be constantly brought back to one role but it is interesting that for all the predictions Nina would start being more Annie-like after the Nelle reveal, it turns out it is "deluding yourself into an alternate reality that you then have to watch crumble" Annie over psycho vengeful Annie that we got. A good choice too as the former is so much more interesting and CW does it so well. She brought it all on herself and yet looking at what she emotes on her face I really feel sorry for her.
