Anna Stuart was temporary Vanessa when Maeve Kinkead was on pregnancy leave. There are some Fall 1981 episodes floating around where Maeve was filmed in a way to disguise pregnancy.

I'll have to check it out. I think the stories at this time are well executed and I can understand why GL was holding up so well against GH.

On a separate note, I don't understand CBS's motivation to part with SFT. Its numbers have dipped from a year ago when it was performing very well, but so have YR's. Either way, the numbers are still reasonable. It could have easily been retuned, although its dip most likely had to do with timeslot change more than anything else.

I wonder if demos weren't as great due to it being an older soap.

GL at #2. I wonder what was happening at the time??

ATWT rebounding nicely. The February 2 episode is available on YouTube.

Watching bits of Nov. 1981 and Diane has been killed (September) and Alan is in Tenerife hiding out with Hope. Vanessa was a suspect but a housekeeper has corroborated one of her lies. Ross and Carrie (Jane Elliot) seem to be quite romantic, but Ross is unaware that Carrie actually killed Diane- so I'm assuming that was revealed sometime between  Nov and Jan., because Ross and Carrie get married sometime in Feb. 82. Nola is pregnant and seems to have caused a big mess in her friend group because of her last for Kelly. Ross is also aware that Phillip isn't Alan's and something about getting him to sign something in the will.

Sorry, I couldn't be more detailed.

On a side note, Anna Stuart as Vanessa is fantastic.

Oh good Lord. IT is trying to get a FAKE Emmy for someone who never deserved an Emmy? The spam queen (YES, she spams) is outta control.

Denice Pence is great in that clip above relating to GL. Greg Beecroft was SO hot! I loved him so much on Guiding Light.

I was watching a bit of Nov. 1981 GL on YouTube yesterday prompted by the 80s ratings thread and I was just thinking to myself woah "Tony" is kinda hot. John Wesley Shipp too...

Something about how Laura had been a virgin, so she got confused and called it rape. It was in an old SOD article posted somewhere on here.

Oh yikes 😬 I get it was a different time and fortunately we've come a long way in regards to such issues, but that explanation is the worst.

I'm not even against Luke and Laura getting married. I totally understand the craze and it was definitely a moment in TV history and quite a special one. Real life issues, dilemmas, problematic scenarios are what soaps are all about. Where it went wrong is the treatment of the rape as not a rape.

    10/1/76.

Really great weeks for Guiding Light. It hadn't reached the 8s since March. It came close a few weeks with a 7.9, but it also had some really low 7s and a few 6s between then - wonder what was going on those months.

August 11, 2009, last actual production day, I believe. Today is an Endiversary. 14 years.

Oh! I do miss the show and just tuning in and seeing familiar characters. That's the thing about soaps, you form such an attachment because you "interact" with these characters daily for years. I know it wouldn't be the same if it was still on and the last years were rough and I didn't watch much, but I wish there was somewhere to revisit whatever is left of the catalog.

Thank you for that footage… omg I’m a history buff and love all things #gh -#geniefrancis - who had the better career #imho - it seems Tony Geary was interviewed more and was thought to be the bigger star but once Genie Francis left it all went down hill. I love Gloria Monty.. what a blast from the past!! I’m watching Dynasty on prime video now.. Lol!! So soapy!!! Delicious!!!

You're welcome. I love seeing all those students in the university commons glued to the screen. Interesting to see how programming geared towards stay at home moms/wives was appealing to such a different demographic.

Some of NBC's issues over the years.

Failing to establish a successful soap beyond Days,AW and TD. For whatever reason they couldn't get that 4th soap to work. The best time was late 60's when they were winning 2-3.30 timeslot. But Bright Promise couldn't build an audience. If they had another strong show then it would have given them more flexilbility.

Then Somerset, RTPP, HTSAM , L&F/FRFP all failed. Was it the shows themselves ?

Revamping Days in 1980.The show had stagnated with too many older characters. But to then bring in another bunch of older, dull characters was madness.

Allowing AW to become a revolving door of characters that really only left Mac and Rachel .

The Doctors did not introduce one successful new doctor character to infuse new life into the hospital setting. A strong young woman doctor when Althea left was a no brainer. Or a sexy male doctor. One of the Dancys could have been a doctor.

I also feel that NBC was a bit heavy handed when the cancelations of some of its soaps. I believe it was so desperately trying to be competitive that if a soap wasn't a breakout hit, it would get the chop.

Can anyone shed light on what the NBC execs were thinking when they brought over Search for Tomorrow in March 1982? When they did so, was it pretty much assumed that The Doctors and Texas would be cancelled, or was there a period when they were actually thinking of going with 5 soap operas?

For 9 months in 1982, it was 11am Texas/ noon The Doctors/12:30pm Search for Tomorrow/ 1pm Days of Our Lives/ 2pm Another World.

Why did they basically abandon the 3pm hour for over 2 years, from March 1982 to August 1984? They had reruns of Chips, then two luke-warm, hour long game shows, Fantasy and Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour.

I'm not sure, but considering SFT was canceled over at CBS with better ratings than the entire NBC lineup, perhaps execs hoped SFT could prop up their numbers by bringing viewers over. Something that clearly didn't happen.

They should have moved Texas to noon. It was never going to establish itself against GH and GL. It would have at least given it a half hour lead when no direct competition.

Edge was getter better ratings than all of NBC soaps at one point. That was with only 81% coverage as compared to Days for example that had 99%.

I remember reading that in a lot of cities where Edge aired at 4pm it was doing well.

But getting stations to carry it was the ongoing problem. Did it air in NY at 4pm up until cancellation?

NY aired it at 4 until the end of its run.

Oh how the mighty have fallen! 😂🙃

Remember when soaps would actually use real roller coasters?

Honestly, it's not that bad all things considered. Definitely doesn't have the same impact compared to the ATWT scene, but the did okay for what they've got. I would have expected a lot worse from soaps these days. Unfortunately, this is what we have to accept.

  13. I wonder how EON would have faired if given a fair shot by affiliates. Considering how successful the rest of the ABC lineup was and GH being it's lead-in, it had all the makings of being a success. I know on the west coast, it apparently aired at noon, so did not have the same advantage. Unfortunately with many networks choosing to preempt, it just never had a chance. The timeslot move on CBS really did some damage, but IMO it could have been saved at ABC.

I wonder how EON and Capitol (CBS) would have done in the 90s considering the rise of procedural dramas in primetime since then. Would have been interesting to see what direction EON would have taken.

  14. I have a question for longtime viewers. It seems like every soap by the 90s had established some sort of leading lady type or face of the show that you would easily recognize or associate with said soap...Erica -AMC, Marlena - DAYS, Vicky - OLTL, etc.

While these ladies are usually beloved, Reva seems to be the most controversial. What is it about the character that makes this so? I know that Reva came on as GL was going through a massive change especially in characters. She's probably the newest of said leading ladies as most were part of their soaps for a lot longer.

I think Y and R competed against All My Children in June 1981.

@kalbir What were the CBS schedules in June 1981 after June 8?

In Feb. during its transition to one hour episodes, it was head to head with AMC from 1-2pm. In June, it shifted to an earlier start time of 12:30, putting it up against the low-rating Doctors at the time and Ryan's Hope which was performing reasonably but not at the height of the rest of the ABC lineup. This half hour lead might have been an advantage to YR.

I would be curious to see what the half hour ratings for YR would be at this time.

I did not like the Peter Richards story either.  I think Dallas should have copied what Knots Landing did with Lisa Hartman.  After Ciji Dunne was killed off in the 4th season, she was brought back in the 5th season as Cathy Geary.  After Timothy Patrick Murphy was killed off as Mickey in Dallas' 6th season, he should have been cast as Peter Richards instead of Chris Atkins.  TPM played a college student in Hunter in 1986 and he was believable even though he was in his mid to late 20's at the time.  To me, Chris Atkins did not have chemistry with either Linda Gray or Charlene Tilton.  Greg Evigan or Dennis Christopher might have been a better choice to play Peter.

Even though Grant Aleksander was on Guiding Light during Dallas' season 7, he would have been a great Peter Richards.

Laurence Lau could have worked.  The show should have cast a mature looking actor yet also look college aged to play Peter.

I was not a fan of the Peter Richard's story either and it largely had to do with CA in the role. I completely agree that he lacked chemistry with both Linda and Charlene. I loved the direction it was headed with Sue Ellen feeling conflicted about the age difference, Peter's friends at the restaurant thinking Sue Ellen was his mom, Peter being involved in the life of her son. It had great elements that could have produced some intense drama, but CA was just creepy. He just looked like a boy. I wish they would have cast someone a bit more manly and rugged. I know times have changed and beauty standards but he just looks scrawny and that lipless smile and limp blond hair do nothing. Not to mention his personality was lame too. I'm sure they didn't want to push the envelope too much at the time, but it would have really been more effective if we did see a lot more passion and an actual love scene between the pair as well.
