  1. Any details on the week of August 27, 1984 for YR. It seemed to be solid leading up to this week, hitting a peak, and then pretty significant drop over the next two weeks.

Capitol also had a really good week that week.

Also of note that week, Santa Barbara had  very significant drop. Even Edge with its low clearance tied in HH.

Seems like the Bo and Hope storyline was bringing in the numbers. Location shoot in New Orleans around that time too

August 22, 1984: On the famous Oak Alley plantation in New Orleans, Bo and Hope had sex for the first time, with Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack’s “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love” playing in the background.

July 30 & 31 Reva the slut of Springfield. Surprised it didn't get a higher rating. They were opposite Olympics though...

I wonder if the impact of such events would come after they happened rather than on the day they actually aired. While such moments are iconic and memorable, they may spark interest from word of mouth or publications...there was no real way to know they were going to happen. Unlike say weddings or big events, where there was much lead up and more precise timeline in mind.

I would think supercouple era Days and Santa Barbara would have appealed to the same audience.

Yes for sure, but I don't know if the entire lineup was ever as cohesive as say ABC's.

  4. I am interested to see Luke and Laura's impact later on in 1984 when they return for a short stint. Laura's return in late 1983 brought a big spike.

Story from the week Y&R went #1. Solid but nothing looks like a barn burner.

    MONDAY MAY 28, 1984 - FRIDAY JUNE 01, 1984

The Young and the Restless: Ashley told a heartbroken Eric that she can't marry him, and that she's attracted to Marc. Nikki conned Victor into admitting that his real name is Christian Miller. Paul and Andy learned that Victor's parents, Albert and Cora, had once tried to get a then teenaged Victor out of the orphanage, only to learn that he had run away. Frank warned Amy that Jazz will never be rid of his mob contacts. Jazz worried that Tyrone, who is Genoa City's new county prosecutor, wants to live with Jazz. Jill lost her baby; then denied John's accusation that she purposely fell off the ladder in hopes that she'd abort their son. Jack warned Ashley that Marc can destroy the Abbott family if he reveals that Dina's still legally John's wife. Dina and Marc mended old fences. Tim nixed John's job offer because he feared it might harm his relationship with Traci.

The second promo in this clip seems to be around this time either week leading up to

  5. I agree on the RHOBH being contrived and the women wanting to be perceived a certain way on camera. It may not be a popular opinion, but Kyle is not a good housewife...she cares too much about what the audience thinks and this plays a role on how she maneuvers and acts on camera because she wants to be portrayed in a certain light. As seasons went on, Kyle began to demonstrate this more and more, to the point I don't even get why she's there. I think this is a big issue with many of the longstanding housewives shows, because the women know how to play the game, they want to be liked and well received, so you're getting less authenticity and more of a forced persona. There's also more hiding or control of the narrative on their part. All of which makes it less fun to watch.

While I love to see GL so high on that list, beating GH with a low 8s doesn't seem like much of a victory. Seems more like a failure for GH than anything else.

GL was easily hitting 8s a few years back, it's finally finding its groove again. Would have been nice to see GL with a 9 again, but still pretty impressive that it beat out its time period competition which it hadn't in a long while. All though, I still hold that it was more impressive how strongly GL performed 78-81 when GH mania was in full force and their ratings were insane.

I should probably be less obtuse if I expect a straight answer.

To me, there are very few eras of DAYS that seems like it would appeal to a fan of AW.

Even before the ABC soaps were established as existing in the same fictional universe, they were marketed toward an identifiable audience.  Similarly, although the P&G and Bell soaps differed in style, it was easy to understand how a 1983 Y&R fan who watched the introduction of teen model Cricket might enjoy that period of GL's four musketeers.

However, aside from times when AW was forced to shoehorn in more action orientated plots, it seems like there was very little carryover for a DAYS fan to enjoy at contemporaneous eras of AW.  For example, does a 1985 fan watching The Dragon action/romance plot with Kim and Shane, also enjoy the mysterious character-driven origins of the Donna Love's twins plot line? Or in 1978 when DAYS Mike is melodramatically marrying a dying Margo does that same demographic want to watch the mature repartee of Iris and Brian?

It just doesn't feel like there was anything characteristic of those two NBC soaps that would attract a devoted fandom to the entire lineup.

I totally get what you're saying, but your generalization here makes it seems like one's tastes/preferences are isolated to very specific "flavors" - while the truth is we can like things that might seem as though they are opposites. Some who likes trashy reality TV shows can similarly like hard hitting investigative documentaries. Where I do agree with you is branding and identity...ABC soaps while all different did seem to be geared towards similar audiences. They had elements that carried over to each which gave them a sense of familiarity to anyone who watched the others - especially the trifecta of AMC/OLTL/GH. I also agree that while the CBS soaps exhibited this to a lesser degree, it was still there. That's why I could easily picture someone watching the entire CBS soap lineup or the entire ABC lineup...while the NBC one just didn't feel like it would appeal to the same audiences. Clealry there were many who enjoyed all of them, but on the surface they were catering to very different types of viewers as you mentioned.

The issue really stems from NBC not having any long running soap debuts since the 70s. SB and Passions were the longest running new soaps on NBC from 1970s until its demise and neither lasted a decade. It is difficult to build a brand identity this way. Meanwhile the trifecta had been around since AMC's debut and had all that time to figure it out. It also helped that they were ABC's soaps. Meanwhile ATWT and GL had been around forever and YR since the early 70s.

Had NBC expanded the Doctors to an hour, had Days and AW follow and potentially allowed one of the fourth soaps - Somerset most likely establish itself - it may have been able to solve this long identity crisis. A crisis which was brought on in large part to it never finding its place in daytime. Apart from a bit of success in the 70s, it began to fall apart and was always looking for something new or different to solve its daytime ratings.

The buildup to Guiding Light beating GH for 3 weeks in a row.

OLTL sinking quickly with Jean Arley as a visionless EP.

So what's the story surrounding this. I've seen it mentioned on this forum a few times that GL supposedly ranked #1 a few weeks in the summer of 1984, but others have pointed out that while GL had surpassed GH, it was not in fact #1. Where did the misinformation originate? Did the message get twisted along the way? I can see how it would be easy to assume that GL was #1 if it beat out GH considering GH was pretty much a powerhouse in the 80s. Is it possible that GL did reach the top?

  10. The rumor going around about a complete ATL reboot is interesting. While I have struggled to follow ATL the past two seasons, it used to be one of my favorite franchises. I don't know if a complete reboot is necessary. I think a Miami style reboot would be better. I honestly think Kandi should go. She doesn't bring anything new IMO. I do like her but she's expensive and I don't think she adds that value back into the show. She had a good run, but I believe her time is up. I haven't been drawn in by Drew or Sanya, but tbf I haven't really watched faithfully these two seasons. I think the cast needs to be refocused around two or three of the girls with a few newbies.

I doubt there is much truth to this rumor yet as casting decisions don't happen until after the reunion but the show is definitely in need of a refresh.

  12. Those are such sudden and significant drops for the ABC lineup. I don't think I recall seeing GH below a 9 and AMC below an 8. Also, the top rated soap at 7.8 is quite shocking...it wasn't even a very gradual decline.

Definitely. Seems like the Luke and Laura exit had an impact on the entire ABC lineup.

I wondered about that. No period of years or era was mentioned. Perhaps they simply misremembered. With message boards, some fans have incredibly accurate memories but some is not all.  Most people had the standard lineup.

I mean it was on at 3pm in the 70s, but that was pretty standard.

This weekend some fans began talking about when AW and Y&R were on in their part of the woods. So I asked everyone & jotted the odd ones down. Most people were as expected. This was the first I'd heard of any US outlet showing AW in the morning.

AW: Duluth 10 am, NYC 3 pm, Other MN 11 am, San Francisco 11 am Pacific time

AW in Canada: Atlantic 4 pm, Nova Scotia 3 pm with Texas after it, NB 3 pm, CTV 2 pm, BC 1 pm

Y&R: MN (not Duluth) 11 am (AW & Y&R were up against each other.), PA (Allentown & Wilkes-Barre) 11:30 eastern

Y&R in Canada: Calgary independent channel 4 pm

What time period are you referring to that AW was on at 3pm in NYC? Since returning to its hour long episodes in the 80s, it was on at 2pm in NYC.

There was some interesting scheduling on CBS 2 NY in 1979, Love of Life was on at noon, followed by SFT 12:30pm, YR at 1pm, ATWT 1:30pm, GL 2:30pm.

On NBC 4 NY, Texas started off at its intended 3pm timeslot, but eventually was moved to 11am, followed by the standard NBC lineup at the time Doctors 12pm, SFT 12:30pm, Days 1pm, AW 2pm.

Differences from Wikipedia chart (all .1 difference):
The Young and the Restless 8.6
    As the World Turns 8.2
    Search for Tomorrow 7.6
    Ryan's Hope 7.2
    Love of Life 5.8

Wikipedia chart (time slot averages of NBC soaps):
    Another World 7.5
    Days of Our Lives 6.8
    The Doctors 6.3
Note: For Richer, For Poorer 2.1 (last episode 9/29/78) listed as part of previous season in Nielsen book.

So GH and YR averaged the same viewers and rating, but YR had a greater share and AMC besting both of them. Even the lowest rated soaps aren't too far off.

So, for the 1982-83 season including summer, we've got (vs. previous season):

    1. GH 9.8 (-0.8)
    2. AMC 9.2 (-0.1)
    3. Y&R 8.2 (+0.8)
    4. OLTL 8.0 (-0.8)
    5. ATWT 7.5 (+0.4)
    6. GL 7.4 (-0.2)
    7. CAP 5.9 (+0.5)
    7. DAYS 5.9 (+0.2)
    9. RH 5.3 (-1.4)
    10. AW 5.1 (+0.6)
    11. LOV 3.8
    12. EON 3.7 (-1.0)
    13. SFT 2.9 (-0.1)
    14. TX 2.7 (-0.5)
    15. DOC 1.6

    (-1.2)

RH clearly the biggest crash that year. Something about Labine/Mayer's return was not connecting with the audience, combined with Y&R's return to form really hurting them. I'm not entirely surprised ABC was willing to push it out the way in favour of Loving at this point. Nice to see AW making such strides, moreso than even DAYS!

Seems like AW was benefiting from a stronger lead in from DAYS as well as OLTL softening on ABC and Capitol performing lower than SFT did in the timeslot.

I think it was unprecedented for a network O&O station to preempt programming as WCBS did with Guiding Light.

Did they stick with GL at 10am till the end?

What programming did they offer at 3pm over the years?

    Edit-did some research

    `Day & Date' move

CBS O &O WCBS -TV New York, facing too many early fringe shows for too few time slots, likely will seek permission from the network to air network soap The Guiding Light, currently scheduled at 3 p.m., out of pattern and probably in early daytime, said a source. That would allow the station to run CBS /Group W's new magazine strip Day & Date at 3 p.m., following the other soaps, Geraldo at 4 and news at 5. If the network allows the move, other O &Os that have added Day & Date to their schedules could follow suit

Day & Date was not a success but GL was not returned to 3pm.

WCBS NY aired GL at 10am from 1995 to the very end of its run. I honestly can't remember much of what aired at the 3pm slot after GL's move...I'm sure a bunch of talk shows, reality court shows, and programs of that nature.

Loving was head-to-head with the second half of The Price is Right. Ryan's Hope was head-to-head with the first half of Y&R which was blowing up in 1983. Neither ABC show had a chance against the CBS powerhouses.

Right, clearance wasn't the issue here, but their competition was tough. However, there wasn't much room to place them elsewhere in the schedule without potentially hurting the other soaps in the lineup. I still don't understand why there wasn't more push to get EON better clearance.

  21. Very interesting to see OLTL slip into the 7s especially when AMC and GH are performing in the 9s/10s.

Guiding Light will show a ratings improvement compared to the past several months. It was honestly slipping after such a good run with Marland.
