The character of Hope hasn't worked since Peter Reckell was written out and every pairing since hasn't rung true.

Alfonso isn't an incredibly strong actress in the heroine role that she was written into for so long and I don't think her exit will have much of an impact on the show. She never quite managed to be the 'star' of DAYS: whether it was Susan Seaforth Hayes, Deidre Hall, Crystal Chappell, Eileen Davidson, or Allison Sweeney, there was always some other actress whose success with a character eclipsed Alfono's Hope.

Do I think she quit? Not quite. I think the renegotiated contract was so poor that she basically felt terminated. There likely comes a point where the amount of work involved doesn't justify the pay cuts.

She never struck me as someone like Suzanne Rogers who will be there till the very last episode if she can help it because she is devoted to the show. Alfonso left before. I suspect she won't be back.

    This is a great analysis.

  2. Just wanted to echo everyone's thoughts about how lovely it was to see the cast rally around Heather, and also how much genuine camaraderie there is among them all.

Melrose Place has always been one of my favourite shows, and it makes me so happy to see that the cast are such genuine people.

I am still watching but a bit infrequently. Do you have precise questions ?

Not yet, but am going to try getting back in to it, so if I struggle I might ask for help filling in the gaps. Thank you!

a I apologize that I don't have the specific episodes, but all of my favorite Cliff moments were when he was able to experience a small victory over JR (even though the rug would inevitably be pulled from underneath him the following week).

In S3 (the Who Shot JR? season) there is an episode where Cliff is on some governmental board and JR needs some sort of drilling variance and Cliff is able to reject it; which I think is the first time that Cliff was able to flex his power  Then, in the S5 finale ep, Cliff and the cartel think they are able to buy Ewing Oil because JR defaults on a loan, but Cliff becomes the cliffhanger when JR double crosses him.

Thank you! I agree it was always good when Cliff was able to have a small victory over JR.

I've just re-watched Election from S1, which sees Cliff's political career sabotaged by JR dredging up a past tragedy. Ken Kercheval is very good in that episode. He really brought a lot to the show.

I do hope though that fans (and I guess the show) move on from the age related potshots. I've never thought of Kim as the kind of character who'd put herself in the position to invite cheap, low blows.

I completely agree. Regardless of whether longer term fans aren't enjoying Kim's return, I find the ageist quips from some of the characters to be really demeaning. I haven't seen much ageism from fans online (mostly because I try and avoid the social media commentary) but there seems to be a  real lack of respect towards both Claire King and the character of Kim.

It's third rate Footballers' Wives stuff and the styling does Claire King absolutely no favours. No wealthy, sophisticated woman who lives in rural Yorkshire dresses that way (even if they have come out of prison) nor does it correspond with the character as she was in the 1990s. The hair, makeup and nails make her look like a hard woman who spends half her life on sun beds and smokes 40 a day. Ironically, she actually looked better on Corrie when  she was playing exactly that kind of character.

Oh, I like the way Kim is dressing - the quilted Barbour gilets, etc. To me it feels age appropriate and 'smart rural' for want of a better phrase. I also like that she's not dressed as a Dynasty knock off. But I've only seen the start of Kim's 90s run - what was her style like then? (I mean, it would have evolved anyway).

And I'm curious - what do wealthy Yorkshire women wear? Is it a less tacky version of moneyed Cheshire?

And the only Barton babies have Dingles as parents.

    Gawd, that's depressing.

Re. the Tom/Joseph Tate speculation - would it not be a bit crass for the show to bring back the character while Leah Bracknell has such serious health issues?
