And this show needs to keep Jack's hot as hell cop ex on the show. He is gorgeous.

    Absolutely!

Am having a mega catch-up on Shorty: what on earth was that storyline with Finn's stalker, Jason?!

I have no issue with soaps featuring gay villains - Hollyoaks has plenty - but a gay man stalking a straight man because he's obsessed with him? Yikes. What year are we in again?

Exactly. I hope Home and Away follows suit eventually and starts updating its broadcast model - the fact it still airs 4 or even 6 weeks behind Australian broadcasts is ridiculous in this day and age.

Yes, it's crazy that in the UK, H&A still airs several weeks behind Australia. Neighbours was given a real boost when it went to same-day broadcasts.

unless they rush production, which can come with its own set of issues.

Agreed - lack of rehearsal time, etc. Do they even get to rehearse on Neighbours? I know the UK soaps only seem to do so when it's a big event these days.

How many episodes a week does Neighbours currently film? Am pretty sure it's more than five, which means they are already used to getting ahead of themselves.

  3. I think it may be a shock to the system for the cast and the production team to lose their long end-of-year break, and it could make the show feel less special to viewers if it's on week in, week out.

BUT this is a massive vote of confidence in Neighbours and bodes well for the show's future. They must be so relieved.

The Barton family has definitely claimed the runner-up spot for most tragedy-struck family, behind the Sugdens. The show has now killed of John, Holly, James and Finn, and most probably Emma as well.

And yet the Dingles live on and prosper.....  <_<

I can't get my head around the show killing off four Bartons in 12 months, it's so extreme.

Speaking of, more and more the potential of doing a Loving murders type storyline with the Dingles becomes ever so much more delicious to me.

This totally needs to happen! With each member paying for their sins - "Zak, this is for Joanie" "Belle, this is for Gemma' etc etc.

Although, for me,  Marlon would need to die and Sam would survive.

And more could be added if it suits me.

    That really made me laugh.

  6. Am so excited about this - I was 10 in 1986 and was gripped by the Rita/Alan Bradley storyline so it will be good to see it again. I do recall it being a slow burn story, and how shocking it was when Alan posed as Len Fairclough in order to get a mortgage or something.

And YES to seeing Ivy in action again!

Am I reading too much into it, or could they be launching these repeats with a Rita-heavy era to coincide with her possibly leaving the show?

Clear to who? To ITV? As long as the ratings stay decent, they don't really care about the rest. The show has been worse than this and nothing was done. To fans? Fans have always said the show is terrible, when it is or isn't, for as long as I've been reading UK soap forums.

A lot of their votes are coming from fans of "Robron" - so once that tapers off, as I imagine it will soon enough (probably by the next awards), other soaps will win - likely Corrie, which is poor, but currently has the hype. The problem is all the other soaps are just as bad, so it's difficult to see a soap win as anything based on merit these days.

    +1

  8. The show continues to clean up at awards shows. It just won in all four soap categories at the TV Choice Awards. (Not the biggest accolade out there, but still). To the casual observer, Emmerdale is doing great.

How long until it becomes clear that the show is running on fumes and can't hide behind the praise around Ashley's story?

Don't have time to watch any of the soaps anymore ... (cries!) However, I think she also killed some grumpy old man patient. I wish there was a good place to read good recaps so I could stay informed of what's going on. Alas, all I've got all their brief Instagram vids.

Thanks! I hear you - it is time consuming keeping up with the soaps. I like Deb from what I saw of her - there's something quite 'old school soap' about her.

  10. So after weeks of wall-to-wall programming (including documentaries featuring men who went through the gay aversion therapy, like Lawrence) and events here in the UK to mark 50 years since homosexuality was partially decriminalised in Britain, Emmerdale breaks up its older gay male couple.

That aside, I thought UK schools don't have proms. I was always told that by some of my friends that grew up in the UK. Is this true or not? It was just odd and cliche all this climaxed at the prom.

They have become a 'thing' here in the UK over the last ten years or so, but yes we didn't used to have them.

If Nel was salvageable I would have been happy to see she become Charity's protege while scheming against the Sharmas. But like most of the stories since the conclusion of Ashley's story it's all been a waste.

And Rebecca as a character works in scenes with Debbie (I wouldn't be against a romantic pairing between these two) and Victoria. I don't hold it against the character that she does not work with Aaron and Robert, who are the equivalent of a black hole.

I stopped watching after Ashley died, and am only dipping back in now to see how Lawrence and Emma's stories play out. Why is Nel unsalvageable? And are Rebecca and Debbie friends now? I wouldn't be averse to Debbie being in another relationship with a woman.

Rebecca needs to go too. Let her die giving childbirth to Robert and Aaron's child.

Absolutely not! Although I can see it happening - I did wonder if Victoria would end up fighting for custody of her niece/nephew thanks to Adam's infertility, if Rebecca died. Lawrence could have funded the legal battle as a way to spite Robert, but that ship has now seemingly sailed.

I loved the Declan story, but ever since she returned under MacLeod she's been haemorrhaging. Her affair with Frank, a pairing that could work, is so boring and lifeless because Megan is involved. With both being con artists, they could have done a will they/won't they/can they trust each other? without another boring affair to deal with.

And someone should be using Charity's carelessness with the Pub as a way to steal it out from under her and Chas.At least then there would be a point to her being locked in there. Like Debbie, she needs a true friend. And like has been hinted at, a type of mentor role to someone new. I don't count Belle because that's family so the dynamic isn't that nuanced, plus Belle is nothing like her. I also despised the way the show had Charity panting after Matt. It was so beneath her.

Charity and Declan's year-long reign of terror is one of my favourite soap story lines ever. It just kept going and going. And I've said it before, but I wanted Charity to emerge from prison humbled and affected from her time inside - not as 'punishment' but just to see her having to work hard to rebuild herself from the ground up and earn her family's trust again. And also to see her deal with the fact that Moira of all people  looked after Noah for a year.

But instead we see her arrive in a stolen red sports car, just because.

And I love the idea of her being a mentor to a young woman and moulding her in her image. Would put Debbie's nose out of joint.

BTW, I've been fast-forwarding most of Frank and Megan's scenes, but has Megan talked about Robbie and Declan in relation to her history with the Dingle viper?

Ah brilliant, thanks for the clarification/correction.

I hope those names were taken as no more than being thrown out there, rather than suggestions.

It's fun to speculate! I think anything could happen with their next producer hire.

The 4 people I would advocate (Myar-Craig Brown, Kathleen Beedles, Johnathan Young and Tim Key) sadly no longer work in soap/drama and the only other I would say is good at giving shows a shot in the arm (initially) is heading up Coronation Street.

I'm not saying they would or should, but apart from promoting from within the show (and I know how 'popular' Alexander Lamb is) there is the option of 'left of field/statement' appointments such as current writer/storyliner/editor(?) Jerome Buchan-Nelson (young, black, and yes that would be a 'thing')

Kathleen Beedles is still in the soap game - she produces a show in Singapore called Tanglin. But I think she's back in the UK regularly, so who knows?

Jerome B-N is now Story Producer on Holby City, but he is a good suggestion. I wonder if he's too young, though?

BTW, I loved Diederick Santer's shady response on Twitter to the news about Sean O'Connor:

I'd say she was hugely missed.

Why do you think so? I adored Edna, and really enjoyed her relationship with Ashley and thought it would have been poignant to see her watch him deteriorate. But I feel that the extended Thomas clan covered all those bases in the end.

I do think that Edna's role in the village community is still vacant, though. But I don't want an identikit replacement to show up, either. It would need to happen organically.

The little boy who plays Arthur is breaking my heart but the old ham who plays Ashley's father is back to chewing the scenery. It's cringeworthy. Dude, you ain't playing King Lear.

Ha! I love Sandy, bellowing and all.

Now that it's over, do we think Edna was missed from this storyline? I'd say not - but think she would have been a great 'outraged parishioner' component of the upcoming Cain/Harriet scandal...

I couldn't watch any of Amy's death as it wasn't about her anyway, just about Ste, as always. What did you think?

I haven't watched it, all the death and murders on 'Oaks makes me nauseous now. I genuinely worry about what message it sends out to its young audience.
