Days of Our Lives: October 2023 Discussion Thread
I call BS on this story that Tom Cruise auditioned for Bo Brady, and it is simple to disprove. Here's the quote from People: "“Oh, Peter you knew that!” Alfonso chided before sharing an anecdote about their late costar Frances Reid. “Remember when Fran sat next to him on the plane? On the way back from somewhere, it was Tom [Cruise] and they started talking and she said she worked on Days of Our Lives. And he was like, ‘Oh, I tested for the role of Bo.’” However, Bo's first scene was in May 1983. That year, Tom Cruise appeared in four movies: The Outsiders (March), Losin' It (April), Risky Business (August), and All the Right Moves (October). The Outsiders had a legendary casting and production history, with primary filming occurring in Tulsa, OK from March 29 to May 15, 1982. So, it is implausible that Mr. Cruise, having just filmed a movie with Francis Ford Coppola, and being repped by Paula Wagner who is a very powerful agent, decided to go out for an audition for an NBC soap opera. Spare me the responses about all the possible ways that Tom could've tried out under various circumstances, because this is a tall tale that defies logic. I don't think anyone is being malicious. But, I also don't believe the story and two things can be true at the same time.

Clyde prediction Also, I agree that the quality is variable, but the show is very watchable, and the stories continue to intrigue me. Besides, I don't get the purpose of posting that you're not watching the show within this thread. It's not (1)entertaining, (2)informative, or (3)engaging. And in my mind, if a post doesn't meet those three criteria, it is just a cry for attention. Furthermore, ending a sentence with an exclamation mark doesn't make it true.

I assume that there was no blood transfer because the patient attacked Tripp with a scalpel. But, my first reaction was that I wondered why they didn't use an HIV protocol, given that the patient abused drugs. It seems de regard for a soap to have an HIV scare in order to create conflict around intimacy in a relationship. I get why nobody at University Hospital wears a mask (because they're on TV), but exposure to a virus seemed like a big oversight for drama. Also, if Tripp was called to the ER because someone ODed, wouldn't they be unconscious? That guy seems suspiciously aware to have been brought to the ER because he just overdosed. He was a very bad faker. So, did Clyde hire the guy to walk into the ER and say that he has ODed, or did he take the bed of a patient who had ODed? At least on GH, they tell us how a guy in jail can control people on the outside. I fail to see how Clyde is able to maintain an organized crime syndicate, given that he's been in and out of jail since shooting EJ seven years ago. And, when he was on parole and killed Abigail, there was no mention of his drug business at that time. Finally, if Harris needs a job to take Ava out to dinner, how did afford inpatient psychiatric care for three months?

May I repeat my objection that Michael has a "friend" at the SEC who is willing to expose the informant? Beyond the ethics of the SEC exposing an informant to the son of a defendant: 1. How would someone at the SEC know who asked Martin to call them? I doubt Martin said that Nina told him to call them because that would totally spoil why Martin would be representing his client. 2. If he has a friend who is a g-man, why didn't he ask him to help Carly? This friend seems to have suddenly popped up at the most covenant time for the plot. I can't help but think that this is a scab writer's only way to make the confrontation occur, despite being illogical. I'm hoping we didn't see the guy's face because another shoe is ready to drop. And, I still don't know how exposing Nina frees Drew if he's guilty. I understand Alexis going after the judge, but Nina did nothing wrong, while Drew and Carly are culpable.

RIP Mark Goddard aka Ted Clayton on One Life to Live (Tina's faux father) and Derek Barrington on General Hospital (Amanda's actual son, but I don't think he was Alison's dad).

It's an excellent point in general about the show, but to be fair specifically about this couple, Nina was in a coma for a long, long time, so Sonny pretty much knows what's happened to her ever since then. But seriously, Sonny has always idolized the women he loved. He never really wanted to get to know them, because he was in love with the ideal of them, not the reality. He just wants to put them on a pedestal and then when they want something more, he loses interest. I feel like that's why it never worked with Alexis, because she would have expected a partner, not an admirer.

I found a draft of Kate's letter of recommendation for Harris 😉 Dear Jada, I'm writing to note my recommendation for Harris What's-him-name to join the Salem PD. I employed him to kill my former captor, and I found him to be very professional, even though he allowed someone to brainwash him for the second time this year. But, I'm sure he won't let it happen again. Also, I know that I have poor taste in men, given that I've dated two guys who abused their daughters, but I vouch for the guy as a mensch. Please let him be a cop, but don't put him in a uniform, because the hat would mess up his carefully spiked hair. All the best, Kate Roberts Kiriakis Brady Dimera Brady PS, please go easy on my former step-son/lover EJ, we've both hired hitmen, but we're just trying to provide jobs in this depressed economy.

I think my problem was Belle focusing on adultery as the main issue in their marriage, rather than her lack of empathy toward Shawn and his disease. Also, my comment is only about Belle's fictional motivation, it has nothing to do with the quality or gravity of the scenes. I was obviously being silly, but it unnerves me how DAYS treats mental illness in general as less debilitating than physical ailments. From Jennifer and Brady's addiction to Phillip and Shawn's depression to Harris and Ava's thought impairment, the portrayal of mental illness and the talking cure is not taken very seriously, despite them trying to ring dramatic value from the story.

Just finished today's ep for 10/12 - I was irrationally angry at Belle for asking Shawn why he feels that he can't lean on her for support. Umm, maybe because you didn't believe him when he was raped by Jan? Despite the fact that you knew their history, Belle! Or when you suggested movie night as an idea while you picked up Shawn from the hospital after he admitted to suicidal thoughts? Or, how you made Victor's funeral only about yourself and treated it like another reunion, rather than asking about Shawn's feelings? As others might say, Gurl bye! Also, Brady, way to go, underplaying the apology toward Chloe until the night before she leaves town! He knows Rachel and Kristen are nightmares, but popped off at Chloe the one time she said it out loud. And now she's supposed to explain her reasoning for moving to NYC with Phillip? - BTW it's been five episodes since they decided to move and rather than packing they've just been going around town having tearful goodbye scenes. John's kids are bobbleheads when it comes to taking some personal responsibility.

I wonder if when Belle and Shawn were SORASed they had any type of introductory dialogue to each other just to facilitate the audience in acknowledging their history? Like, "hey Shawn, just remember we're not really cousins because my father was only programmed to think he was your father's brother, but he's not." Sort of like those obligatory scenes when a new character is cast (or recast) as an existing family member and for the few weeks everyone references them as "son" or "brother" in order to orient the fans (e.g. Roman to Kate, "this is my sister Kim, Theresa's mother, and Stephanie's aunt, who was once a sex worker like Chloe, and then had multiple personalities like Abigail." - aka the most inorganic way for two characters to speak).

I agree @Antoyne, it would be weird if Rachel suddenly came downstairs as a full-grown teen, but Holly and Tate have been incubating long enough to be SORASed. Also, just a theory, but it feels like they are getting a do-over for the concept of Allie, except Sami was missing to play out the story. Because, once again, the former bad girl has a terrible teen to deal with and help the character progress beyond only having romantic entanglement stories. I prefer the "reap what you sow" parental plot over the bitchy Mom with an angelic kid scenario. Is it just me, or has Nicole's baby bump not grown since August? Furthermore, whenever Johnny discusses his love of the visual medium of film, I always wonder what happened to his glass eye? I guess, just like Shawn-D's childhood deafness, or Phillip's lost leg, neither disabilities nor death are permanent in Salem.

If Holly and Tate are meant to be 16, they need to be given dialogue that matches their age. When was the last time a teen called someone a "big mouth" or used the term "crush"? Between yesterday's old-fashioned joint, and today having them text rather than DM, it feels like none of the writers have ever interacted with a modern adolescent. @carolineg Your chart begs the question - If Theresa is dating Alex, and her son is 16, is she significantly older than him?

I know they're always cagey about the ages, but I wonder what the age differences in story are meant to be? Tate mentioned being 18 on Monday when it was suggested that he work at the pub to pay off his debt. Johnnie is Allie's twin, and she was in college when she met Charlie in 2020, so I assume they're around 22. But, is Chanel slightly older than Johnny? And is Holly meant to be the same age as Tate?
