This ruling concerning Ohio is terrible news. https://twitter.com/NickKristof/status/1006187077745238021 I ask myself that every day, but I agree with you the way he is alienating our allies is pretty disturbing. Carl is right that a lot of Republican Senators are cowards. Ben Sasse in my state is a perfect example. He's slipped a few times so I know he is not on the Trump train, but he's a pure coward and wants to get reelected. My other senator seems to be a true believer or she does a much better job faking it. It's just crazy the way all of these "leaders" have gone along with this monster.- What are you currently reading?
The Line Becomes a River by Francisco Cantu. It's a memoir of being a border agent who worked from 2008 - 2012. It's almost quint given what's going on since 45 became president.- The Politics Thread
I hate the way he calls the Canadian Prime Minister "Justin". I know it's a small thing, but it's clearly meant to diminish. The trade situation is completely off the rails and we all have damn good reason to be terrified about these talks with North Korea. Who among us thinks Trump has enough knowledge to conduct negotiations with NK?- The Politics Thread
^ Well, there's some good news on this not so great day.- The Politics Thread
He comes across like an old fool. I'm not sure if he was always like this. It's like Trump has given a big chunk of people permission to show their inner loon. It's truly disturbing. They lie with impunity and believe there are "alternate facts".- The Politics Thread

^ Yes. Those first couple of sentences tells me she gets it. I never thought she deserved to lose her show over this, so I hope this can be the end of it. I also think that people have to stop looking to Ivanka as a savior. The last couple of months should make people understand that she is nothing of the kind.- The Politics Thread
This is so sick. Not even the part about the doughnuts, which is just clickbait. I mean coming for non violent people with dogs and helicopters. http://thehill.com/latino/391057-undercover-ice-officers-gave-out-donuts-before-rounding-up-workers-in-raid?__twitter_impression=true- The Politics Thread
I can only imagine the number of homeless seniors we'll have in 10 years if these programs are gutted. Add to that the loss of assets to the younger generation who can afford to support their parents. What a mess.- The Politics Thread
It looks like Howard Schultz is testing the 2020 waters. No thanks! I do agree with him that the debt is going to be a big problem down the road. Still anyone who wants to solve that by cutting the safety net, after giving that huge tax break to the wealthy will not be getting my vote. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/06/05/howard-schultz-rips-democrats-for-veering-too-far-left.html- The Politics Thread
Wow. Not that it's really surprising. It's horrifying and infuriating that this man is shaping the federal courts.- Who's that Girl?

Is it really being complicit when you are fully on board? Republican women aren't just complicit at this point, imo. That's letting them off too easily. They have completely opposing values to the other half of our sex and race and they are fighting hard for those values. That's one of the reasons there really isn't a sisterhood of white women and never will be. We may be oppressed, but not in the same way that black women are. I'm taking about right now, never mind historically. The people who oppress white women are in large part members of our family and people that we have to make families with. It's a different dynamic. It's not as harsh as when society as a whole is trying to break you down, so we don't have to band together within the group. We band into cliques within the larger group. Like I told Khan awhile back, to say something like "white women hate each other" is almost meaningless. I doubt that I'm unique in the fact that I rarely (before Trump) ever thought of myself as a white woman. That's what privilege is. When I see another white woman I don't think there's a member of my group. I think there's another person. She's basically another stranger to me. It's like when I was in an all women's college and a visiting professor said "I hardly ever thought about the fact that I'm a man until I got here." What he meant was that in his day to day interactions he never had to think about being a man until he was so outnumbered. When I see another white woman I certainly do not think I've automatically found a "sister" although over the years I have found some. As I've gotten older I feel a certain sisterhood with all women, but I never expect it to be returned. I go to a female doctor, lawyer and dentist. I would not vote for anything that harms women as a whole, even if it benefited me personally. As for Samantha Bee, I'm not sure this is about white women being upset that she "betrayed" one of our own. For white women on the left Ivanka isn't one of our own.- The Politics Thread
What happens when we take SNAP away from drug offenders. No surprise they end up back in prison. Watching our society get worse by the day is so disheartening. https://theintercept.com/2018/06/01/food-stamps-drug-conviction-snap-welfare/ That's the real issue to me. I could GAF about Ivanka. We saw what she did in Israel. We saw that picture she posted of herself with her baby when other mothers were seeing their children ripped away via her father's policies. Only an evil, selfish person could do that. Anyone who still thinks she is in any way interested in being a moderating force is kidding themselves.- The Politics Thread
This is where SamB did herself no favors. She said something foolish (but I won't say incorrect) at just the wrong moment and now she's being associated and compared with Roseanne. Roseanne has a pretty long history of racist tweets, so that's one difference. I would also argue that while Roseanne was impaired (by drugs and /or mental illness) she said what was really in her heart. You don't keep saying these things if you don't believe them on some level. I would argue SamB doesn't see the C word the way some of us do. I've never seen her show, so that's just a guess. It sometimes amazes me the way that word just rolls off some women's tongues. Of course, what Roseanne said was actually misogynistic as well as racist. Her alt right crowd knows that calling AA women apes is a way to attack their femininity, which is one of the reason they do it.- The Politics Thread
I certainly understand on an individual level why a person would not want to put their family through the racism, especially someone with underage children. I think what it really shows is that in the internet age a person has to have some serious ambition to do it. I agree with you that what Roseanne did and what Samantha Bee did is different. Maybe because Samantha is also a woman. I see using the C word as self hating and dehumanizing, but it's simply more forgivable. It's not because it was used against Ivanka either.- The Politics Thread
WTF is he doing and why? Crazy. I think many of us know it's true and the rest will never admit it. For Trump, there is no bar at all. He's gone rogue and the Republicans are allowing it because he's giving them what they want in terms of taxes and abortion. The constant insanity and corruption is draining. That's how he likes it though.- The Politics Thread
^ That was a really good article. Nice to see President Obama's thoughts. Plus this: Mr. Obama had authorized a statement to be issued by intelligence agency leaders a month before the election warning of Russian interference, but was thwarted from doing more because Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, refused to go along with a bipartisan statement. Mr. Rhodes called Mr. McConnell’s refusal “staggeringly partisan and unpatriotic.” But Mr. Obama, whose Supreme Court nomination had been blocked by Mr. McConnell for months, seemed less surprised.- The Politics Thread
Congrats to your mom. The really odd thing I've been thinking about today is that capitalism seems to be working better than representative democracy at the moment. Trump is president despite nearly 20 accusers, but a lot of men lost their jobs because of #MeToo. Trump is president, but Roseanne lost her job because of her racist remarks. There's a strange dissonance to it, but it's better than nothing, I guess.- "The Conners" Discussion Thread
