Tyler Perry's 'Haves and Have Nots' on OWN
It is lazy but he doesn't care enough to pay professional writers. I didn't really watch Loving but I heard that was there was a serial killer that killed several characters in the final days of the soap. I remember on Capitol, some character were shot in front of a firing squad in the last days. Both of these instances sound better than what happened on HAHN. Perry's already moved on to BET, lol, 'bout to ruin another show.

Women In The Director's Chair
In primetime television, Ava Duvernay has done a lot to bring a whole group of women into the directing ranks, and women of color in particular (something daytime has yet to do, despite having a loyal following among Black women) but this is all fairly recent. There are a few ways that daytime drama genre, in it's earliest days can be regarded as fairly progressive but this is clearly not one of them. The genre more often than not, moves as slow as molasses. I also specifically mentioned daytime soaps on television as they are still where the money is (however scaled back). Web soaps don't yet measure up to the ones on television, although if the budgets decline any further, they soon shall be. Venice and other web soaps are still primarily crowd-funded productions.

Insightful thread that proposes that we think about anti-vaxx and COVID deniers the way we regard drunk drivers or those who knowingly infect people with HIV.

Women In The Director's Chair
The reason why I specifically asked about women directors is because director is usually a male dominated field and I thought about the fact that the daytime soap was a genre that targeted women, whose audience was made up of primarily women and to see whether the genre was different from movies and primetime tv in it's day, was it somehow different, more progressive, given its target audience. Other jobs with television and film production tend to be more open to women. Historically there have been quite a number of producers-associate, line and executive producers. Director is often still regarded as a predominantly the domain of men, especially when one thinks of the most famous directors, women's name don't tend to automatically spring to mind. What I realize is that for television, especially daytime soaps, the director doesn't seem to occupy the same prominent position as he/she would in film. I'm not sure how gender dynamics might figure into why, for instance, it's so hard to find out definitively who the first woman to direct a daytime drama was, but the fact that the answer isn't right there is strange to me. Especially in a genre started by a woman, that likes to remind people of its 'feminist' credentials.

This question went unanswered when I posted it in the As The World Turns thread, so perhaps that wasn't the best place to pose this question: are there any daytime soaps that aired on American television that had two or more women as directors during the 1980s? As The World Turns had Maria Wagner and Jill Mitwell. I wonder if this was rare or are were there other daytime soaps that had at least two women regularly occupying the director's chair?- The Tennis Thread

We're there any other daytime soaps that had more than one woman directing episodes during the 1980s? I have noticed that ATWT had Maria Wagner and Jill Mitwell and I wonder if this was rare or common during that time period.- The Politics Thread

I agree. So much so, that that bottom-feeding ex Fox News channel host is trying to latch onto Naomi just hoping to resurrect her battered "brand" but Naomi was having none of it. Remember when tennis media used to claim that the Williams Sisters were damaging their careers by not playing a "full" schedule in the late 90s? How did that prediction work out? They were also criticized for having "too many outside interests" and not devoting their time exclusively to their tennis. Again, how did that work out?- The soap opera writers' discussion
You're welcome. A few days ago, I put in a request for my local library to purchase her book. If it were in the stacks, it would give me an excuse to take a brisk walk to my library and check it out, donning my mask, of course.- The Media/Journalism Thread

Okay, inquiring minds want to know now. WGA rules seem very specific to the point of rigidity, but perhaps the rules were looser at that time? I would think that even a writer of Marland's caliber, the lawyers would keep a sharp eye on the contract, so that no writer runs away with the show's assets. I think what a headwriter/creator would have more leverage than a head writer, but perhaps after two Emmys for show and multiple nominations, P&G were willing to loosens the purse strings enough to release that perk. Also, I wonder whether perhaps upon his death something would have changed in terms of ownership but if he had a very Beckettian estate, they would've kept very tight control over the terms. I was doing a quick search to see if I can find out who is the executor of his estate and was stopped in my tracks when I saw a link to Douglas Marland et al, vs. Donald Trump. Immediately I thought theory about Tad Channing being based off of Trump had been proven correct but I think it's a different Douglas Marland, who might be in real estate as the lawsuit appears to be pending.- Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Did Irna Phillips or her estate get royalties for the characters she created? If anyone was entitled to royalties, certainly it would've been her. The more I think about it, the less likely I am to truly believe that the characters were pulled because of royalties (if he even had such an agreement). Sometimes executives say things and/or pass a rumor around, but it may be just that, a rumor. I got a chance to listen to the interview I got a chance to listen to the, shall we call it an interview? Yeah, I agree that Alan talked over Suzenne a lot. It seemed as though, just when she was able to collect her thoughts and begin to talk, Alan was interjecting his thoughts. I got some enjoyment out of it, but like everyone else, I wish a more skilled host would have conducted this conversation. Another thing that struck me is how memories can sometimes get tangled because Suzenne mentioned that she believed that she was the first actor on a soap of that era (i.e. since cigarette smoking was banned on TV) to smoke onscreen but I remember a few years prior to her Julie, I saw Leanna Love on Y&R light up onscreen during her debut during the late 1980s. I am not sure where she would have gotten that information.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Sometimes I pretend that most of that didn't happen. If ATWT were ever to be fortunate enough to get any type of retool or revisit, a la All My Children/Pine Valley, I would definitely want to see a re-telling if certain stories. The last decade, in particular was pretty lousy story-wise. I'd be barraging whomever with story ideas for repairing the damage, because I've got tons.
