As good as Emmerdale Farm was during the 1970s and 1980s it didn't stop them from doing some re-writing of established history. The worst one was definitely the one involving Dolly Skilbeck and her illegitimate child. In late 1977 Dolly's ex-fiancee turned up and wanted to get back together. It was then revealed that she had given birth to a his child three years earlier and given it away for adoption. This was very explicitly stated in the dialogue on several occasions. Fast-forward to 1986 and suddenly the same boy appears on the show and is in his early 20s, meaning his birth was pushed back a decade. You also had the mysterious case of the missing third child of Ruth Sugden. When Ruth, who last appeared in early 1974, re-appeared in 1980 not only did she go by the name of Pat (explained away by giving her full name as Ruth Patricia) but she only had two children with her, Jackie and Sandie. But when she had appeared on the show in the very early episodes she had a third child, Tommy. But he had mysteriously vanished, and was seemingly forgotten by both his parents and his siblings.- The Classic Film Thread

Oh for heaven's sake. This is getting beyond ridiculous now. On top of everything else, now they're doing a story on modern slavery??!! Emmerdale star Joshua Richards breaks silence on Bear's devastating story- What Are You Listening To?

R.I.P. Pauline. Both Rose (Jean Marsh) and Sarah (Pauline Collins) dead in the same year. There aren't many stars left now from this show. It's over 50 years old so that may not be surprising, but it still hurts every time one of them goes.- RIP: In Memoriam Thread
Another piece of "Upstairs Downstairs" gone..... There aren't that many left now, and every time one of them goes a little piece of my heart goes with them.- ALL: Worst re-writes in soaps history

One that was ultimately successful in a way, but dumbed down the characters involved was Drake Hogestyn's Roman not being Roman when Wayne Northrop returned as the real Roman. The difference between Hogestyn and Northrop physically made you wonder how anyone, least of all Marlena who was intimate with both, could ever buy the impostor. The face could be explained away with plastic surgery, but plastic surgery doesn't alter body type, height etc- ALL: "Soapy" Podcast hosted by Rebecca Budig & Greg Rikaart
And he clearly continues down that path with the current Luna/Will rape story.- ALL: "Soapy" Podcast hosted by Rebecca Budig & Greg Rikaart
I see your point, and I agree. I just think that the story should never have been written, whether it was a re-write or planned all along. Being a re-write did make it worse, but Brad Bell should steer clear of this kind of story regardless, because he doesn't have the writing skill for it. ETA: And with the way the story unfolded I don't understand how anyone can say that it wasn't a re-write.- ALL: "Soapy" Podcast hosted by Rebecca Budig & Greg Rikaart
Does it really matter if it was a re-write? The story should never have been written in the first place. This show has a very bad track record with stories like that and Brad Bell is not a good enough writer (to put it mildly) to be able to pull it off anyway.Important Information
