ALL: They Almost Became
I don't know if I said this one or if someone else has already but Jeff Trachta auditioned for the role of Jack Abbott on Y&R. They liked him so much they hired him to replace Clayton Norcross on B&B as Thorne.

Thanks for the vids Carl. I am pretty sure Brenda's first scene back was with Marla Adams and occurred around Sep 9th 1983 (around that week anyway). It used to be on youtube. When Dina came to the Abbott house to visit and caught Jill drinking in the afternoon. They had a very deliciously bitchy fight. Actually the scene (footage not just audio) you posted audio of used to be on YT in an edited form, but had Jill talking to her mother about Kay trying to destroy her marriage as well. What you miss is when Kay says "You really are a......." she forms a c with her mouth before stopping herself, or so it seems, lol. There were so many scenes of Brenda's first few months, and a ton of Brenda's scenes from 1984 as well, but they have since disappeared. Too bad, I liked her in the first two years she was back. I wish they would be re-posted.

True. I also think Bell wrote from a patriarchal point of view sometimes. Maybe he wished for the closeness with his own daughter when she was grown, was LLB born when Y&R started? The Brock/Lorie thing intrigues me, they had a fling in Europe (offscreen) and she tried to tempt him back into bed, but he had found god. I think it was one of those minor flirtations Bell seem to do a lot. Would be interesting to see those scenes. As they had no interaction (from memory) during her guest appearance at Nikki and Victor's wedding in 1984, I could be wrong and it would seem odd if they didn't. Y&R did extremely well in the first year for a show not being broadcast in many places initially. Off hand Carl I heard Bryna Laub disliked the show, while most of the soap press seemed to applaud it. Do you know why?

Thanks for the article Carl. Conboy was definitely a good fit for Y&R in the early years. He really made an impact on the show. I have only seen the entire first episode, one from 1975 and a few scenes from the same year in broadcast quality and I have to say I disagree that video can look good. While I admit that Conboy did a great job with the lighting and such and it does look amazing for a show shot on tape, I can't say it looks anything as good as it would have on film. That lighting and those sets on film would have been stunning. Though I have to agree Conboy and co. did a great job with the attention to detail, colours, wardrobe (when they discussed wardrobe I could hear Brenda Dickson saying "They wanted to tape down my bosom"). When they were talking about how great Y&R is at the beginning and how quickly it became liked by audiences, I was reminded of seeing several polls in soap magazines and having Y&R at or near the top with Espy and Stewart hitting high on the polls too, and this was in the first year and a half. It is interesting to hear his take on the show, how everything comes back to love. The family ties are nowhere near as strong now on the remaining soaps, which is a shame. Though I did find it interesting when I think Trish Stewart or Janice Lynde said in an interview once that they didn't understand why the girls always went to their dad for advice about life and their relationships, something she though most young women would rarely do, instead going to their mother. I know Peggy and Jennifer shared a lot of scenes in the beginning. Interesting read, love these BTS articles with crew members.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
Bell said in his Legends interview his story consultant title was just that, a title, when he left in 1975 he left completely and that title was merely a legal consequence. I get the feeling he may have assisted Pat Falken-Smith if/when she asked as there are excerpts of letters published in the Days anniversary book where he gives advice on characters/stories that happened during PFS run. Bell also stated in an interview in 1990 that he let Pat do her own thing, and tried not to interfere.

Thanks Soapdope for that info, clears it up. Yeah I read the same article where he stated he wanted the show pulled, also saw the interview he did and yeah I am not surprised he retired that year (believe it was done in 1998) it is sad because if he hadn't been sick he could have written the show for a few more years and delayed the destruction of it. I thought Bell's interviewer was not that great, which is too bad as I really thought they only skimmed the surface. Too bad it was done when Bell was not in as great shape.

Considine started on AW around May 1974 or something and Donnelly Rhodes said he was with Y&R for about 18 months. He is part of the first cast photo which I assume was taken around the anniversary in Mar 1974, Daytime TV listed JC as a cast member around Jan/Feb 1974 so I assume the swicth took place around then. I too saw the scene with Kay and Phillip (Considine) in her living room. It is on an interview Jeanne did to celebrate one of her anniversaries with the show. One thing I can't grasp is when Jeanne came on the show. Jeanne always said she started 6 1/2 months after the show began, making that around October and most list her start date as Nov 1973. But Daytime Tv list her as a new Cast Member for Jan 1974 and in Jan 2004 there was an article in a newspaper (which I can't find) that said Jeanne was celebrating 30 Years with the show that month. The synopsis from Bryna's newsletter I found for Jan 1974 makes it sound like Kay is a new character too introducing her as socially prominent Mrs. Chancellor, and a new customer at the Salon. So confused on that one.

Not sure. There certainly isn't any reason for them to have shared a scene, as the stories had no connection at all to each other. Kay seemed isolated to Jill and her family and the men they fought over until about 1980 and Jennifer Brooks died in 1977. Jennifer's story was mostly about Bruce Henderson and their affair and Lori's paternity, then her illnesses. If they did share a scene it may have been incidental, possibly at the country club or something during the Jill/Phillip/Kay storyline. Or if Jennifer had any scenes with Liz and Kay happened to be there too.

This might sound strange, but I always appreciated how whenever Nikki was in hospital on deaths door (happened so many times) Melody went sans make-up and looked near death. At least in 1987, 1992 and 1998 I remember her like this. So many actors end up looking made up and perfect that it is annoying.

All My Children Tribute Thread
Here is November, should have December by tomorrow. 1973 November Paul is delighted that he and Ann have resumed their marital relationship, but she points out they’ll have to really try to make it work. When Nick pushes her to leave and plan a future with him she evades the issue and painfully sks Ruth Martin if one woman can love two men equally. Nick’s wife Kitty is planning a party for Phil’s return and is looking for a bigger house, unaware that Nick is definitely planning to leave her as her psychiatrist tells him it makes no difference in Kitty’s analysis if he’s with her or not. Tara is devastated to learn Phillip is alive and coming home and, guilt ridden, she reacts in apparent shock. Her husband Chuck reminds her that baby Phillip is legally and morally his child and he loves him, that she must not tell Phil the baby is really his. When Chuck’s grandmother Phoebe begins to set up a trust fund for her great-grandson, Tara reacts violently and feels she must see Phil before she can decide what to do. Phil arrives back from Vietnam with a tropical fever and is held at the base hospital. He questions his mother Ruth about why Tara isn’t there until Ruth finally explains that Tara is married to Chuck and is very happy. Heartbroken she lets Phil tell her how he and Tara married themselves the night before he was sent out to Vietnam and that he always felt the vows were binding, that she’s his wife. Unable to let him know she already knew this, Ruth explains Chuck and Tara’s relationship grew out of their mutual grief at his reported death. Unable to accept this, Phil has Nick drive him into town and he visits Tara. She explains, as Ruth did, she believed him dead. He’s stunned to find she has a baby named after him and he leaves only after kissing her and telling her he feels she’s still his wife. He can’t accept this has happened to them. Phil asks her not to tell Chuck he was there but he forgets his hat and when Chuck finds it, he’s hurt and angry that Tara hadn’t told him. She still can’t decide whether to tell Phil about the baby or not. Erica begins her testimony at Jeff’s trial. She tries to imply that Jeff was jealous of Jason, but Paul forces her to admit Jeff wanted desperately to divorce her so he could marry Mary Kennicott. But D.A Hamilton learns about the money Joe was paying Erica and he implies that they were paying her to change her testimony. The damage is done, and it is doubtful if anyone believes Erica's testimony now. Mary, terrified for Jeff, asks him to suggest Paul bring in another lawyer, a co-counsel. Paul is hurt by this but agrees to do it. Paul opens the case for the defense, saying Jeff is innocent because the motive of jealousy simply did not exist. Mona testifies that Jeff wanted to rid his life of Erica, but Hamilton makes it seem as if Mona is lying so Jeff can be freed and return to Erica. Mona also testifies that Jason dumped Erica and threw her out the night he died, which contradicts Erica’s statement that they were going to marry. Pressed about the night of the murder, Mona suddenly has memory flashbacks of Jason and she collapses repeatedly on the stand. Realizing she knows something so upsetting she has blocked it out of her memory, she agrees to examination under sodium pentathol and the trial principals meet in Dr. Polk’s office. Under the drug Mona recalls she went to Jason’s suite that night. He crudely insulted her and told her Erica was a tramp and a witch. Still yelling insults, he pushed Margo’s gun into Mona’s hand telling her to return it to Margo. Afraid of guns Mona backed off, but Jason persisted and she fell and the gun went off, killing him. She ran out in shock and hysteria and blocked the whole episode from her mind. Hamilton has to ask for a mistrial and charges against Jeff will be dropped.

Ratings from the 70's
Thanks Carl. It is interesting to see what shows were doing well in the ratings during the 70's.

1973 October Jeff’s trial begins. D.A Hamilton’s opening statement accuses Jeff of killing Jason in a jealous rage as Erica was supposedly going to marry Jason. The D.A forces Dr. Frank Grant and Mary Kennicott to testify to Jeff’s love for Erica by citing things that happened long ago. Paul manages to clarify the timeline of events and includes information about Erica’s abortion that she had without Jeff’s knowledge. Hamilton tries to imply that Mary and Jeff’s relationship is an illicit romance on the rebound, but Paul brings out the fact that Mary and Jeff plan to marry as soon as he’s free. Paul shows Margo Flax had opportunity to kill Jason and better motive. She’s furious he is implicating her. Erica is now terrified of testifying. She begins to drink and take tranquilizers and eventually collapses and is rushed to hospital. A waitress from the Inn testifies that Jeff wasn’t drinking that night, but Margo was there and she was drunk. Margo is incensed by Paul and tells Ann she is resigning her job with the boutique. Lt. Riselle introduces the Tempo magazine article layout depicting Jeff and Erica as a happily married couple. Paul needs Erica’s testimony now more than ever to reveal that Jeff only agreed to the layout on the condition that Erica would sign the divorce papers. Since she is hospitalized, a postponement is ordered. Erica’s tests show nothing is wrong with her, but terrified of going to court she insists she is faint and dizzy so she can remain in the hospital. Realizing she is malingering, Joe implies the next step will be exploratory brain surgery, after which Erica miraculously recovers. She immediately announces her health is secondary and she must help Jeff. Nick continues to press Ann to divorce Paul and re-marry him. Ann and Paul decide to try again to make their marriage work and they reconcile. Kitty hopes Nick gives up on Ann and turn to her. Nick, however, is determined to leave Kitty as soon as Dr. Polk, her psychiatrist says she is well enough to handle it. Tara is persuaded by Chuck to take a vacation as the trial of her brother Jeff is becoming too much for her. Phil’s identity is verified in Saigon. Ruth and Joe are informed he is alive and what happened to him after his helicopter crashed in Vietnam almost a year ago. Phil is flown to the Philippines and calls Ruth who is overjoyed to hear his voice but painfully tries to avoid his questions about Tara. Ruth tells Joe she accidentally discovered the truth about Phil and Tara marrying before he left, though the marriage wasn’t legal. She also knows that Tara and Chuck’s baby is really Phil and Tara’s. Ruth visits Jeff in jail who confirms the story and points out morally and legally baby Phillip is Chuck’s son and Tara has moved on. Ruth and Joe agree not to mention they know about the “marriage” and paternity to Chuck or Tara and leave it to them to decide what to do. Chuck is stunned to learn Phil is alive. His world seems to come apart as he realizes that while Tara now loves him, it is a different kind of love than the overwhelming love she and Phil shared. He can contend with the memories she has of Phil. But he becomes worried about what Phil, alive, will do to his marriage. Chuck now has to go home and tell Tara that Phil is alive.

All My Children Tribute Thread
Hey Guys. I came upon some daytime tv newsletters from Sep - Dec 1973. I am trying my best to add all of them but am a little behind. Here is September 1973 and I hope to have the rest within the day. 1973 September Nick Davis is badly shaken when he accidentally sees his ex-wife Ann kissing her husband Paul Martin. He’s still trying to convince Ann to leave Paul and come back to him. Paul, meanwhile, tells Ann she must soon decide if she wants to try to save their marriage. Nick’s wife Kitty tells Ann she, Kitty, needs Nick and will do anything to keep him. She reminds Ann how badly Paul would be hurt if Ann left him. Kitty continues to fight for her marriage despite Nick’s insistence they have no marriage. Kitty continually tells Nick that Ann will never leave Paul. Police Lt. Riselle refuses to believe Margo Flax, and not Dr. Jeff Martin, took her gun to Jason Maxwell’s the night of Jason’s murder. Erica, learning about the gun, tells everyone Margo must have killed Jason. Erica, Jeff’s estranged wife, agrees to testify to correct the mistaken impression she gave the police when she implied Jeff still loved her and wanted a reconciliation. But only if Jeff’s family giver her money for expenses while she is in Pine Valley. Jeff’s father Joe is furious, feeling it is extortion, since Jeff was indicted for the murder of Erica’s supposed fiancée Jason, only because of Erica’s distorted story to the police seem to give Jeff a motive. Erica coolly settles for one hundred dollars a week to stay and testify. Mary Kennicott, Jeff’s fiancée, begs Paul, Jeff’s lawyer, to arrange for her and Jeff to marry as soon as his divorce is final, despite his being in jail awaiting trial. Paul makes her see the prosecution would imply she married him quickly to have immunity from testifying and this could hurt Jeff’s case. Erica admits to herself she is frightened of testifying, as she still doesn’t remember where she was the hours after Jason broke up with her and threw her out, the hours during which he was murdered. She sounds out Kitty about her psychiatrist and books an appointment under an assumed name, but then cancels it fearing the Martins would find out. Nick tells Paul of Erica’s interest in Dr. Polk, suggesting Erica may fear she killed Jason. Nick and Joe both feel Erica, who has a violent temper, could have killed Jason then blocked it out of her mind. Erica is furious when her mother, Mona, learns about the money from Joe and calls it blackmail. Tara Tyler realizes she is finally happy again. Her love for Phillip Brent is now a wonderful memory of the glory of first love and she now has a different, gentle, more mature love for her husband Chuck and they plan to have another child. Phillip was however pulled from a river in Vietnam by a young Vietnamese boy named Binh, who lost both his legs in the war. For nearly a year, Binh and his sister Lan, cared for the delirious Phillip who has now begun to recover. Binh brings him in his boat to a small hospital and Dr. Le Dho, the American educated doctor, assures Phil he’ll make it, but it will be a while before he’s well enough to travel even to Saigon. He’ll try to get word through to Phil’s family. Phill tells Dr. Dho he wants to tell them himself. His wife Tara has been waiting too long already and he only dreams of reuniting with her. Phil feels deeply indebted to Binh, when Dr. Dho tells him about the Committee of Responsibility, which takes casualties of war like Binh to the U.S and rehabilitates them with surgery and artificial limbs, Phil promises he will make sure people at home know all about it when he returns. As Phil begins to recover and think of home, Ruth Brent Martin, Phil’s adoptive mother, Nick Davis, his natural father, and Erica, all dream Phil is alive and are disturbed by this. Tara is upset by dreams that a man she can’t see is calling to her. The voice is always so real and afterward her mind is full of thoughts of Phil. ------------------ According to Daytime TV Nick Benedict assumed the role of Phil Brent September 5 1973. So I am assuming this synopsis isn't in order of what actually happened week to week.

Sally had a baby with her high school boyfriend Frank Martin, he turned up around summer 1973 when Sally and Snapper were on a break. He had married but his wife couldn't have children, so he tracked Sally down in the hopes she could help him find their daughter and he could raise her with his new wife. Not sure of all the details. But they did find her, she was living with a nurse named Jane Wilcox who was engaged to a man who didn't want the little girl, Jane dumped her fiancee and Frank helped Jane until they eventually ended up marrying. I think Sally may have had a romance with Frank as well which resulted in him divorcing his then wife (who I believe never showed up in GC). Don't know the complete accuracy of this. I do have a yearly synopsis from 1973 that I pieced together from hundreds of sources on the net and in books and magazines from that era, I can post it, but I have no idea how accurate it is. The almost rape in the asylum may have been by a woman, if not I am sure Leslie was hit on by a woman in the asylum.
