Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
Sadly many gay men are misogynists and treat women like trash, and some are also aggressively sexual with women because they can say they didn't mean anything by it. Gay men aren't women, there are different power dynamics in things like bar and club situations, so there will be different reactions. And sometimes of course men are inappropriately touched while out and that's wrong, which needs to be discussed. The sexual abuse and the conditioning in the gay community that tells men they are only worth their bodies and should accept whatever is done to them (or whatever drugs they're offered, or reckless situations they're led into) should also be discussed. I am glad you're having those conversations with people as I wouldn't know where to begin. I wish that the person who wrote the article had done a better job - it feels like a wasted opportunity.

It's embarrassing and also pathetic how childish Pai is and how desperate for attention he is. Beyond that video I posted yesterday where he was dancing around with that pizza woman, he did another video reading "mean tweets." I have to assume that he's being so well paid for all this he doesn't feel he has to worry, and he can just show off. I've seen some say he wants to use this to run for higher office. He will likely get some big checks, but he has is about as likely as Jeb Bush to get past the first post. I wonder if he has any idea just how many lunatics are out there. I saw that other man, in the video linked above, joking about "telecom geeks," with smug laughter as the response. They don't seem to have any idea about a lot of the people who hate this law and will be out for payback. The idea that everyone on the Internet is sitting in their mother's basement with thick-rim glasses, eating cheese puffs, never seeing daylight - that's not how it works (it was never that way anyway). You'd think that they would know this because they've already talked about getting threats, so why are they still treating it as a big haha? This is serious stuff and the effects are genuinely very frightening, on multiple levels. And there wasn't even an attempt at a real discussion. They didn't even bother to pretend. I've never seen any greater example of just how out of touch this administration is. And that's saying a lot.

The accusations against Hoffman are sickening. And I was reading the comments at AV Club - someone found what they say is Hoffman talking about losing his virginity. It's also sickening. It shows how many of these men are put into this place at such a young age and they go on to cause so much havoc. I eagerly await pigs like Alec and Rapaport putting on their superhero capes again. https://www.avclub.com/1821313509

Unfortunately I thought it came across as naive, especially telling gay men that if they don't have a problem being touched in a bar or a club, they have no self-worth. It's not about self-worth - it's more complicated than that. The other argument in it, that gay men are too sexual, is as old as the hills. While there is likely some truth to it, the author doesn't do a good enough job explaining the correlation between this and not caring about sexual abuse. Gay men aren't going to have the same type of reactions to these situations that you will have with a man and a woman. Shaming them for that instead of trying to talk about how the gay community should react (on their own unique terms) is a very bad idea.

I'd guess he's more aware that he won't be able to keep his Speaker job for much longer. He may have a primary challenge but I think he could survive it as he hasn't angered the base the way Cantor and Boehner did. I don't think he'd last as Speaker much longer though. The so-called freedom caucus and their endless tantrums and power moves have made the Speaker's job a poisoned chalice and that will cause more and more problems in future.

It feels like inertia. They feel they have to do something, anything, and they're afraid of the financial consequences if they don't. If they lose reelection they know they'll get cushy jobs out of this.

Good. This shows one of the reasons why the AL Senate race was important (even though that isn't given as a reason it does apply more pressure). I just wish all the other unqualified hacks were getting the same treatment. This guy was ridiculous. I still can't believe he didn't even tell them his wife worked in the WH.- The Politics Thread
I read some tweets from black voters in Alabama who complained about Jones' campaign doing a poor job with the community, and making it clear they were just voting against Moore. In a way I feel like it was unfair to take black voters for granted and just assume fear and anger toward Moore was enough. Yet I also wonder how much he could do, realistically. And I wonder if he should do more, even though he is likely losing in 2 years, to help encourage these loyal voters who have to go through so much to even cast a vote, for the sake of the party in Alabama down the line. I used to think Democrats needed to try to find a message to bring everyone together if possible, beyond the right wing extremists who will never listen. Between the many who essentially spat in Obama's face even as he begged them to keep what he fought for intact, whether it be through staying home, voting third party, or going around encouraging others to not fight hard right candidates because in the long run it will "wake up" Americans, I don't really believe that anymore. I'm starting to think that the micro-targeting and threading the needle that the Democrats were trying to do in recent campaigns may not be the worst idea - the main problem is that as with Hillary's campaign, they just didn't do it very well. Either way, I think the last few elections have shown there are some voters who on paper should be reached but clearly do not want to be reached, and it's time for the Democratic Party to begin leaving them behind and focusing on the voters who will turn up and just need more encouragement and support.- The Politics Thread
Classic Trump. And she will survive, as she always does. She has about fifteen hundred lives. At least some people there got a good laugh today.- Courts gut Net neutrality laws
The big FCC vote is Thursday. I wonder if two elections heavily carried by black voters will cause any of those articles about black voters not caring to be shelved. Moore is a monster, and the whole country owes those voters a debt of gratitude if these results hold. I also hope his horse shits on his oversized cowboy hat.- The Politics Thread
I would have agreed some years ago, but not in more recent years, as it's a finely tuned vicious cycle of "moral victories" that mostly lead to Democrats not really changing anything while the GOP and their allies in the press make a meal of their dysfunction and string them along. If Jones wins then I'll give a lot of credit to him and the voter turnout in Alabama (and the DNC as they apparently invested heavily in turnout) but the Republicans are so good at localizing elections and at getting the results they want - the main focus will just switch to "Moore shouldn't even have been that close" and more focus on how now Democrats will hope for too much, etc. etc. In the meantime I'm just pleased if Jones won and hope that the party gets out of its own way.- The Politics Thread
This race is an outlier so if Moore wins they will just say it was him and they still won. I'm wary of sites seeking attention and revenue, like the New York Times, trying to game coverage to get eyeballs. That means if this goes to Moore (which I hope it doesn't but have to assume it will) you'll have the usual demoralized Democrats, and you'll have Republicans gleeful and also having another stick to beat the media with. Republicans win, yet again, on multiple levels, with a media happily playing along for their own benefit.- The Politics Thread
That's an interesting article, although I think they would have been better off not mentioning Moore in the title as I doubt that's why Trump lost evangelical support. I'd say it's because he's so crude day in and day out but that's being too generous to a group who have lost their way. This is off topic to your post but I'm dreading the inevitable navel-gazing media pieces when Moore wins big tonight, about how we don't understand real Americans and how Democrats need to get religion and how they just aren't doing it right, what a win for Trump, and how this proves the danger of accusing men of harassment, and on and on and on.- The Politics Thread
Wow about Ryan Lizza. I've been reading his work for years. The New Republic seems to producer some real scuzzballs and nightmares. Even before these harassment reveals, you would hear about some awful people working there.- Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread

I feel like a lot of people started ignoring Baldwin's past when his Trump impression took off and they naively believed that he was rattling Trump so that made him great. With Apatow I don't know if it's the public as much as the media - they have given such outsized importance to his opinions on Weinstein and Bill Cosby, while downplaying moments like his whining that people were trying to "censor" HBO for calling for Confederate to not be put on the air.- Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
