That's what Time would have done for many years. Now we get a Tina Brown-esque hack and patch job. I think that the lack of sincerity is what hurts many in this type of debate. When I look at that cover, not for a minute do I believe Time actually cares. Just as a lot of the people who prop up the media mostly seem to be phoning in their reactions, because deep down, it doesn't really affect them anyway. The days of real grief or emotion in media outlets or in most politicians feel long gone.

That cover looks so cheap and tacky to me. If I had any respect for Time I might be more moved by it than I am. It just feels like a cash grab.

Here's various Magnavox ads with John Bennett Perry looking handsome and sparkly-eyed (about what he did on Paper Dolls...).- DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
It's amazing how the most arrogant writers are often the least talented... Was it Laemmle who did the Julie burns story? Oh wait - that was SSH's mother. Never mind. Did Laemmle bring in Renee and Lee? Was Cassie the one that was involved with Chris? It made me laugh that they predicted Mary being killed off because she was acting just like Charlotte on GL. It's a shame this was so obvious even a year before it happened. I wonder if anyone liked Fee in the role. The little I've seen was not good - she seemed to be like a prototype for Brenda Dickson's 1986-87 Jill (oddly enough Fee was more restrained when she temped for Brenda as Jill...).- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
He actually said that? No wonder the writing for her was so suffocating. I would have wanted a bang for Barbara too, but compared to the way she and the other vets were showcased (or not showcased), I was pleased enough. If Hal had still been alive (Benjamin Hendrickson too of course) I would have wanted them back together. I haven't really seen a lot of Barbara and Gunnar together so I can't judge their relationship.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I didn't really mind it. It gave Barbara a year or more of story, which was the most she'd had in a role beyond embarrassing camp villain, and I didn't think it made the character look bad, unlike most of those plots. She and Henry weren't a fantastic couple, but I thought they were decent enough together. I would have wanted more for Barbara, but compared to most of what she'd gotten, I enjoyed it for what it was.- The Politics Thread
That jacket actually makes my jaw drop. I guess they just are in Breitbart level trolling now.- The Politics Thread
Good point, although I don't feel like they're hammering the GOP that much - I think they're fed up with Trump, because of the way he treats them, but they still have hope for Republicans. They are also still pushing the "both sides," as the NYT did in the last day or two with their latest "everyone says such bad things now" article. I think there's something inside the culture of the media and the men who run it that makes it difficult for them to ever detach from Republican ideals. Joe and Mika are the most vapid nobodies in all of cable news - they've never done a thing to help anyone and have never had a compelling word to say. She is a walking, talking SNL news sketch from 1989. Yet they are treated like royalty. I guess the industry still falls for this breathy faux-importance. I saw a thing about Mika making sure we know she and Ivanka are friends and she talked to Ivanka over the phone about immigrant policies and how Ivanka's response was a "joke." Every word had the trumpeting of vacuousness - "I'm so important and Ivanka is my friend even though I talk real talk to her!" I just can't stand them. I really can't.- The Politics Thread

I meant the commercial - sorry. Thanks for finding an AW actor though.- The Politics Thread
I think people are wary mostly because special elections can be an iffy qualifier (I think Democrats did well in them in 2004 and 2009/10). It's the special elections which are making me hope Democrats will win at least one chamber of Congress (I'm not completely up on whether they're able to put any state legislatures in play), but the map is against them. As for the media, they support Republicans, generally, as this gets them more money/ad revenue and this also helps their many "strong father" issues (see all the years of crying over McCain, and how excited they'd get when Trump would shoot missiles, etc.). I guess it depends on whether they will want to have Democrats do a little better so they can try to blame them for problems in the next few years to help Republicans in 2020. Most of the time, with a few exceptions, the press at large will always be partial to the GOP.- The Politics Thread
I'm not fatalistic, per se, about their chances, but I feel like a lot of people are still lulled into the idea of a huge anti-Trump backlash, the same way they were in 2016. It makes me nervous, because I feel like if we get another 2016, or even a better year but one that doesn't live up to expectations, many will hang up their hats for good, saying that America can't save itself, white people want everyone to die so why bother anymore, take your pick. I dread the coming, inevitable crash on the left. Hopefully there's enough work going on to where we will win back at least one chamber. Unlikely as it is, I really hope it can happen. I'd say what others already said - it went too far and was stupid. I wish all the people who think they're being clever by going on about Trump's son realized that it is mostly desperate and pathetic, and gets them nothing beyond a few extra likes and retweets. I've pretty much had my fill of "Celebrities yell about Trump...how brave...yay them!" I think the tipping point was seeing de Niro get his feet bathed for yelling random obscenities at the Tonys. I'm sure it made him feel good, but I'm not going to get my medals out, especially given the anti-vax documentary scandal a year or two ago.- Twin Peaks

It's been odd to see the focus given to Steve Schmidt leaving the GOP, when he has had no real power in the party for a decade or more, and mostly appears on cable news, saying what people want to hear for cash. This happens again and again (Michael Steele, Ana Navarro). I hope someday the media will stop with their fantasy of how important it's supposed to be when a consultant who sees their paychecks drying up or knows the party has no more use for them jumps ship.- The Politics Thread
The media is, right on cue, already spinning this as a trap for Democrats (get ready for those "Democrats in disarray" headlines). https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/20/trump-family-separation-democrats-659965 And it looks like nothing will even change that much: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/20/family-separations-trump-executive-order-641356 Rudy meddles in a Louisiana Congressional primary for his new girlfriend: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/20/rudy-giuliani-love-life-white-house-657981 And finally, the next time somebody tells you that the Republicans really are sick of Trump and will sit at home in November to teach him a lesson, show them this: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/20/poll-voter-enthusiasm-trump-655682- The Politics Thread
I get what you're saying, and on many Trump matters (especially trade) I agree, but the money that can be made off of these centers and Sessions' deep ties to the big bucks made from private prisons really makes me feel like something else was going on with this choice. From reading that thread it sounds like it was Peter Fonda. I didn't really even know he was still around to be honest.- The Politics Thread
The whole gradually getting people to accept families being locked up like animals sounds like something Jeff Sessions would have come up with. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the plan all along (maybe one Trump wasn't fully let in on). The good thing (if there is anything good in this) is now that attention has been focused on this issue, hopefully many of the people who are angry will remain angry over the policies and the issue won't leave the spotlight.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I like Maggie too, although making her all about babies made her difficult to tolerate, as happens so often with women on soaps. It's still weird to me how she was written out and never mentioned again. Even many years later my mother would talk about "Lyla's sister Maggie" and "Lyla's sister was with Tom too," and I never had heard anything of this character. I knew nothing of her until I got the ATWT history book when it came out.- The Politics Thread
For me it's less about not being perfect or not having this at the forefront of their minds and more the active role cable news played in the worst of where we are now. MSNBC and CNN gave Trump a full-court press and in some cases played his rallies in full when he was talking about immigrants being drug dealers, rapists, and killers. They didn't have any real issue, as they profited from what he was saying. I don't trust them to not flip again when it suits them.- Twin Peaks
I agree. I think it may just be Kyle (hopefully he will get a nomination). I think if there's another actor they really like and want to give them a nomination because of history with them, rather than being on Twin Peaks, that could also happen - not sure if there's anyone in the cast who fits that bill. If there's a surprise nomination I think it could end up being someone like Jim Belushi or Eamon Farren.- Twin Peaks
Indiewire names their underrated TP Emmy contenders (misspelling one of their names...). http://www.indiewire.com/2018/06/twin-peaks-actors-emmy-awards-michael-cera-1201976038/ I would have included Dana Ashbrook. I always was a fan of Bobby because of Dana's emotional beats and his charisma, more than the acting itself, but he was also very good on that front in the revival. One of the more unsung heartbeats of the revival, in my opinion.- The Politics Thread

I think someone here once said Kincaid was cast because he had been a popular supporting player on AMC (as Opal's cowboy husband). I have a feeling they just said "He's goofy like Justin Deas - hire him" and didn't think past that. Thank goodness they got Gregg Marx not long after. I just wish Marx and HBS had been able to have the long periods of happiness (in soap terms) that Dolan and Holmes got to play, as the happy and fun moments I've seen of them are really something special. All the angst Marland gave them is too much for me to watch.- The Politics Thread
The irony is Jeff Merkley was pilloried up and down back in 2008 for not being "liberal" enough compared to his primary opponent. Reminds you again of the danger of purity tests. Seth Macfarlane and the Modern Family producer have blasted Fox - the latter claiming he would never work for them again when Modern Family is done before backflipping faster than an entire gymnastics team. I think Paul Feig said something too. And Judd Apatow, but I automatically tune out anything he says. https://news.avclub.com/modern-family-co-creator-cuts-ties-with-fox-over-fox-ne-1826962485 - Primetime Soaps
