You heard things like black voters wouldn't turn out in higher numbers because Obama hasn't focused on them as much as he should have in his Presidency, or because of gay marriage, or school vouchers, or whatever. But when you spend four years seeing people pass around photos of Michelle Obama as Cheetah, you're probably more likely to be motivated.

The more I read that about that man firing people and then using Obamacare as his excuse, the more annoyed I get. Once upon a time people used to take personal responsibility. It's a success in what was prevented, mostly. With gerrymandering, I don't think there was any way to take the House back. If Democrats fought harder they could abolish the filibuster, but I doubt they will.

I remember watching at that time and while I think the show was fresher, I also couldn't connect that well with the characters. Monster of the week episodes can be hit or miss and can wear a show down if there is no change. I remember feeling more invested when their father showed up, and I thought things were going to change, but then he was killed off. I also remember thinking Dean was kind of an ass and not in a way where I could empathize with him. For whatever reason, I find that much easier now. I think this is a show which didn't ever quite adapt to running longer than it was supposed to (since it was only planned for 4-5 years). IMO Sam should have been written out. They should have figured out what to do with Castiel beyond going back and forth between powerful and powerless, crazy and sane, naive and all-knowing. I think he's too strong of a character and Misha Collins too charismatic of an actor to let go, but clearly they have had huge headaches in knowing how to keep him around. But I will say the show is in better shape than some other shows I once enjoyed which fell apart after two or three seasons (Buffy, Angel).

It was a status quo in the makeup of Congress, but the stakes were so huge that status quo in terms of the country was a victory. We aren't exactly in a great place now but we might have gone hurtling back to the darkness if our de facto leader became Grover Norquist. There was a major change in what was expected and what was typical, but that isn't something which is fun or cool to chatter about.

I sort of lost interest in the show in the first year or two, so only went back recently, and am not fully invested. The show does seem very empty. I wonder why they killed everyone off. It's all very 1985 Doctor Who on that front. But I do like the character rotation this season. Too bad their casting of guest roles isn't a little better, and the episodes seem to have a lack of energy. I have to admit I mostly want to see what happens with Dean and Castiel. Not romantically - that's not going to happen, no matter how much the actors joke around or how much people insist it's all fated based on a line from season 4 episode 20, or something- just because I think the characters and actors have insane chemistry that you have a tough time finding. One of the other surprises of the night was that Jim Matheson, the only Democrat Utah sends to Congress, managed to beat Mia Love, who was adored by the media and the national party. He moved to a new district after the GOP drew his old one in a way he knew he had no chance in. Republicans have no reason to compromise. They said in 2009 that they would fight anything Obama did, and voters rewarded them in 2010. Until we get another wave in the House, nothing will change. I can't bear to watch most of the TV, I was going mostly on WSJ, Politico, etc. I did watch CBS, suffering through Bob Scheiffer. Sure enough, earlier today someone kept talking to me about how Obama hadn't won the popular vote. I told them he had, but I don't think it got through. What I noticed most was the rush to say, "No mandate, compromise, no mandate, nothing has changed." But I do have to give credit to one of the women on CBS This Morning or whatever it's called. I can't remember who she is (she was also on election night coverage) but she kept pushing Virginia's governor, McDonnell, about WHY Romney lost Virginia. He would only say Obama had better ground game, blah blah. She wasn't satisfied. He paused, looking stunned, confused, and we got dead air before he went back to the talking points. For me the biggest surprise was the Senate. Everyone knew Democrats would keep the Senate, but aside from Arizona (still very far right), Nebraska (lost cause) and Nevada (somewhat shaky Dem candidate, robotic GOP candidate), every Senate race broke the left way. I was especially surprised at how Montana was never even a contest - the Republican, Denny Rehberg, was apparently so disliked that the libertarian sucked up over 6% of the vote. I was also surprised to hear that Democrats got a supermajority in California. Some of the scrambling and outright anger and despair across the Beltway and at conservative thought pieces seems to center on the distaste that minority groups banded together and were not the minority. You hear this over and over - Obama won in spite of not having a majority of white voters. That means he didn't legitimately win. Or that he is simply not popular, he just managed to pull a fast one. The implication is - did they forget their place? It's very clear that many still see minority groups as tools, and as part of a divide and conquer strategy. I imagine strong efforts will be made to go back to divide and conquer, probably making a feint at immigration reform and hiding behind scandal-plagued but media beloved Marco Rubio. Whether it will work, I don't know, but at least we're getting some honesty.
