ARTICLE: Erika Slezak Remembers Jerry verDorn: “He was a man of such warmth and kindness” (Exclusive)
As word on the passing of Jerry verDorn continues to trickle out, and as colleagues, family and friends continue sharing some of their fondest memories of the beloved actor across social media and elsewhere, verDorn’s former “One Life to Live” co-star, Erika Slezak, has shared with Soap Opera Network her own memories of the actor from their eight years together where she played Victoria “Viki” Lord Buchanan to verDorn’s Clint Buchanan. “For anyone who knew Jerry verDorn, Sunday, May 1st, was a heartbreakingly sad day. He was a man of such warmth and kindness, talent, intelligence and most importantly humor, that every day spent working with him could hardly be called work. It was joy,” Slezak said of verDorn. “He so loved what he did and was so very good at it. I was the very lucky recipient of his last 8 years in daytime and I thank God for that.” Jerry verDorn joined the cast of “One Life to Live” as Clint Buchanan in October 2005. He remained with the daytime drama series until it concluded its run on ABC in January 2012. He reprised the role in April 2013 after the show returned and transitioned to an online format that amassed just over 40 episodes. He was joined by Slezak who also reprised her role on the soap. “He made every day one to look forward to. I will always think of him with that lovely, rather impish, smile on his face, and that will stay in my heart forever,” Slezak notes. “I know that he has gone to a peaceful place, with no pain. I send my love and deepest sympathies to Beth and their sons and their families, of whom he was so very proud. They have lost a great man.” From 1979-2005, verDorn starred as Ross Marler on “Guiding Light.” In 1995 and 1996, he won two consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for his portrayal on the soap, both in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He died on Sunday, May 1 after a months-long battle with cancer. The family of verDorn asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Jerry’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, Autism Speaks, the Actors Fund, or a charity of choice. A private memorial celebration will be held later this summer. Joshua Benard will be back on “General Hospital” this month, revealed his father Maurice Benard who plays Sonny Corinthos on the daytime drama series. The younger Benard last appeared in the Wednesday, March 16 episode as Adam, a PCU classmate of Josslyn’s (Eden McCoy) who said some insensitive things to her following the revelation of her and Cameron’s (William Lipton) first time being filmed without their consent and shared online. In 2018, he played a younger version of his father’s character in flashbacks. The younger Benard was a guest on his father’s popular podcast, “MB: State of Mind,” which features guests talking about mental health and mental health awareness. Previous guests have included several current and past “GH” stars, including Laura Wright (Carly), Tyler Christopher (ex-Nikolas), Kimberly McCullough (ex-Robin), and “The Talk’s” Sheryl Underwood, among other daytime vets. “Joshua and I talk life and his passions and how they each mean so much to him in different ways,” said Benard in describing what fans will see in the latest episode of his series. “Acting, singing, composing and playing music. He’s always expressing himself through it. He plays a little guitar for us at the end, but as the conversation ended I thought to myself we are so similar in so many ways, which may be why we clash at times, but I am so damn proud of him.” In addition to returning to “GH,” the younger Benard is set to have a mysterious HBO project air this summer on the service and he’ll be releasing his first single soon. Amber Heard Trial
After coming under fire for comments she made on the Friday, April 29 broadcast of her daytime talk show, “The Drew Barrymore Show,” in reference to Johnny Depp’s $50 million defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, host Drew Barrymore issued a public apology on her Instagram account, stating, “I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person, and I very much appreciate the depth of this, and I will grow and change from it.” The episode featured an exchange between Barrymore and guest Anthony Anderson (“black-ish,” “Law & Order”) and was shared across the show’s social handles. It has since been deleted by the show following Barrymore’s apology. In the episode, Barrymore commented about the Depp vs. Heard trial, which began on Monday, April 11, while sitting on the floor, looking up at Anderson. She said to him of the trial thus far, “It’s like one layer of crazy. It’s a seven-layer dip of insanity.” Anderson added, “It’s truly amazing just to sit back and read the transcript of what they’ve done to each other.” An excited Barrymore responded to Anderson’s comments by displaying herself as a person licking the pages of a book that you just can’t put down. “He lost a fingertip. He drew his name in blood on the wall,” noted Anderson. “How about the burnt body, and why a Honda Civic?” questioned Barrymore. “You know the next day at Honda they all came into the office and were like, ‘Why did he pick us? Like, why?’” She added, “I know that these are two people’s real lives and I know what it’s like to have your life put out in public. I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering up this information that nobody had to know. This is crazy!” Amber Heard, Johnny Depp Photo by BAKOUNINE/Shutterstock Apologizing on Instagram on Sunday, Barrymore said, “It has come to my attention that I have offended people with making light of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, and for that, I just want to deeply apologize and appreciate everyone who spoke out because this can be a teachable moment for me and how I move forward and how I conduct myself.” She further stated, “I can be a more thoughtful and better person moving forward because all I want to do is be a good person, and I very much appreciate the depth of this, and I will grow and change from it, and I thank everyone for helping me grow along the way and teaching me. Thank you.” Fans weren’t having it with Barrymore’s apology, some going so far as to say Barrymore ended up making the apology about herself. With Craig’s relationship with Leo now ended after the latter’s secrets and real intentions have finally been revealed, actor Craig Spirtas concludes his latest run on “Days of our Lives” during the week of May 2 when Craig leaves town. Spirtas reprised the role in January when Craig followed Nancy (Patrika Darbo) back to Salem after she suspected he had been cheating on her with another woman. It turned out he was cheating but instead of a woman, it was with another man, later revealed as schemer Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart). Before leaving town, Nancy will try to provide comfort to her heartbroken ex on Tuesday, May 3. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, May 4, Leo will plead for another chance with Craig even while releasing a shocking article that makes Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) furious. In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands now, Rikaart reveals that Leo did indeed love Craig despite everything. “Leo’s really hurt and angry, and he doesn’t have the best coping skills,” the actor tells the publication. “The easy path for him is to lash out and try and make the people he feels responsible for making him suffer, suffer as well. From his perspective, too, these guys really went above and beyond to wreck things for him in a way that didn’t really feel justified.” Rikaart is referring to Sonny (Zach Tinker) and Chad working to undermine his relationship with Craig. While pleading with Craig for another chance, Rikaart notes, “We’ve seen this side of Leo before he and Craig have this heart-to-heart.” He adds, “We saw it at the wedding when he got to be pretty vulnerable with Craig after things went awry. In this moment, we do see him a bit vulnerable, again, and the honest side of Leo that he keeps hidden is a big step for Leo.” Sadly, it’s goodbye for the two despite Leo’s genuine feelings for Craig being accepted as truth. “It’s amicable … in the moment,” Rikaart teased. “Leo feels dejected and is disappointed, then it’s full steam ahead to get back at everyone who Leo feels is responsible.” And nothing is going to stop Leo from doing just that, at least not Craig who departs Salem for other opportunities. For a sneak peek at what’s about to go down, check out this week’s trailer below. It’s been nearly four months since the “UEFA Champions League” soccer games began with West Coast preemptions impacting “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “Let’s Make a Deal” (on stations it regularly airs after “The Talk”), and on Wednesday, May 4, the second leg of the semifinals with a match between Real Madrid and Manchester City will do it again. More recently, the CBS shows were interrupted on the West Coast on Tuesday, April 26 and Wednesday, April 27. As has been the case since we first started reporting on the preemptions in February, the May 4 game will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT on CBS and via streaming service Paramount+ with a pre-game show titled “UEFA Champions League Today” airing at 2:00 p.m. ET in place of “The Talk” which will be fully preempted by the network. Only “The Price is Right” will air uninterrupted. Viewers living in markets impacted by the preemptions can keep up with the latest episodes which will be made available on the CBS App, CBS.com, and Paramount+, or check local listings for overnight airings. Note: The Tuesday, May 3 game between Villarreal and Liverpool was originally set to air on CBS but will now air exclusively on Paramount+. Thus far, every game aired on CBS since February has amassed less than a million viewers per day, a far cry from the average watching CBS’ regularly scheduled programming. “UEFA Champions League” is an annual competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations as the remaining top 16 clubs in the European tournament each vie for the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens (aka European Cup) trophy. Upon his return, Martin and Lucy are forced to defend their relationship to Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart), more specifically Martin must decide between his friendship with a Cassadine or his growing romance with the Deception powerhouse. The show’s co-head writers Dan O’Connor and Chris Van Etten, and Herring teased the plot in the current issue of Soap Opera Digest, on newsstands now. “Martin returns to Port Charles, and he must finally choose between his friendship with Valentin and his budding relationship with Lucy,” says O’Connor. “Or you could say, choose between love and money!” commented Van Etten. Meanwhile, Herring reveals how she found out Knight would be back on the canvas. “I said to Frank [Valentini, executive producer], ‘Where’s Martin?’ And he told me, ‘Oh, I think you’re gonna like it! His first show back, you throw your dress on his head!’ I said, ‘Okay! This is good!’” Storyline-wise, however, Herring shares, “I think she [Lucy] needs to know if he’ll choose being with her over being Valentin’s lawyer.” Regardless of the outcome, Herring has been enjoying her time working alongside Knight, telling Digest, “He is such a joy to work with,” and noted, “We bring so much history and I think we’re always winking at the audience – without even meaning to.” Look for Knight beginning Tuesday, May 3. While he’s best known for his portrayal as Jason Morgan on “General Hospital,” Daytime Emmy Award winner Steve Burton actually made his daytime debut as Harris Michaels on “Days of our Lives” in 1988, and that’s who he’ll be playing when he appears in “Days of our Lives: Beyond Salem” (Chapter 2). In an interview with SoapHub, the actor told the publication, “Joining ‘Beyond Salem’ — the limited digital series for the peacock — has been a lot of fun and very nostalgic.” He added, “I started my daytime career on ‘Days of our Lives’ in 1988 while on a hiatus from the sitcom I was doing called ‘Out of This World’ when I was a senior in high school. It’s been really cool to reprise the character I started with, Harris Michaels. “Daytime is a small world, so I knew a lot of the cast and crew already and met some new peeps,” Burton continued. “Everyone has been so welcoming, and I am always grateful for new opportunities. Looking forward to the finished product. Stay tuned.” In November 2021, Burton exited his role as Jason Morgan on “GH” after he was let go from the soap which had implemented a vaccine mandate. “I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions and both of those were denied, which, you know, hurts. But this is also about personal freedom to me,” said the actor at the time. “I don’t think anybody should lose their livelihood over this, but with that being said, you know me, I’ll always be grateful for my time at ‘General Hospital.’ I love it there. I grew up there. I grew up with some of you, so, I’ll always be grateful.” The ABC drama series remains the only daytime drama to officially have a vaccine mandate for its cast and crew. In addition to “DAYS” and “GH,” Burton has also starred in “General Hospital: Night Shift” and “The Young and the Restless.” He’s voiced numerous characters for video games, including the “Final Fantasy” and “Kingdom Hearts” series. He played Captain Russell Keys in the TV mini-series “Taken” in 2002 and played Captain Peretz in the film “The Last Castle” alongside stars Robert Redford and James Gandolfini. Mark Ruffalo also appeared in the film which was directed by Rod Lurie. In “Out of This World,” Burton played Chris Fuller the on-again and off-again love interest of Evie Ethel Garland (Maureen Flannigan). On “Beyond Salem,” Burton joins a cast that includes returning veterans Kristian Alfonso and Peter Reckell, reprising their roles as Hope Williams Brady and Bo Brady, respectively. Also starring in the series are Deidre Hall as Dr. Marlena Evans, Drake Hogestyn as John Black, Stephen Nichols as Steve “Patch” Johnson, Mary Beth Evans as Kayla Brady Johnson, Lucas Adams as Tripp Johnson, Camila Banus as Gabi Hernandez, Victoria Konefal as Ciara Brady, Robert Scott Wilson as Ben Weston, and Remington Hoffman as Li Shin. Brazilian-born actress Jossara Jinaro who portrayed the recurring role of Rae Thomas on the NBC daytime drama series “Passions” over several episodes from 2002-2007, and appeared as Rosa in a 2006 episode of “The Young and the Restless,” has died. She was just 48 years old. In a post on Jinaro’s official Facebook page, her husband, Matt Bogado, stated that Jinaro passed on April 27 after battling cancer. “With great sorrow, I announce the passing of my wife, Jossara Jinaro on this date, April 27, 2022. Jossara bravely fought cancer and came home to be surrounded by family,” said Bogado in the post. “Jossara was an amazing wife, mother, artist, and friend. She had the most beautiful, kind soul and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Even in her last moments, she was still fighting. She is now resting in peace and will be remembered forever. Myself, Liam, and Emrys will miss her so deeply, although we know she is in our hearts and guiding us every step of the way.” The post included a picture of Jinaro and Bogado with their two children. A public memorial service for Jinaro is expected to take place in the Bay Area at a date to be determined, Bogado shared. On “Passions,” Rae was the “strong and sexy” club owner who was involved with Simone Russell (played by Cathy Jenéen Doe), the younger daughter of Eve and T.C. Russell. Their storyline received a GLAAD nomination in 2006. Sadly, the relationship didn’t last as Rae was murdered in February 2007 before she could reveal what she knew about Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald (Galen Gering) being framed for raping Fancy Crane. Reportedly, this marks the first time in at least 12 seasons that a CW series has had its run cut short after thee years on the air. The last series to do so was the first iteration of “The Game.” Showrunner Caroline Dries made the announcement on Twitter earlier today, tweeting, “I am bummed, but full of gratitude.” With Live+7 figures factored in, “Batwoman” was averaging just over 750,000 viewers per episode and was doing a mere 0.2 rating in Adults 18-49, the key sales demos used to set ad rates for primetime television. Overall, the show was down 20% from its second season in Total Viewers and ranked 13th out of the 19 dramas aired on the network this season. “Just got the sad news that #Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes. So many inspiring, brilliant people contributed to this series. Thank you producers, cast and crew. Thank you, fans! We love you,” read Dries’ full message. Note: The post ‘Batwoman’ Canceled by The CW After Three Seasons appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. James Corden made it official on the Thursday, April 28 broadcast of “The Late Late Show with James Corden” when the actor and comedian addressed the news of his departure from the venerable late night series he began hosting on March 23, 2015. He replaced Craig Ferguson who hosted the series from 2005-2014. In his monologue, he said, “I have some news of my own to share with you. Seven and a half years ago, I started hosting this show. And there is no other way to put it, it has changed my life. I love it. I love all the people that work here. I am so proud of what we’ve achieved. It’s been beyond my wildest, wildest dreams. So, I’m happy to announce today that I’ve signed a new contract, to carry on hosting “The Late Late Show.” The audience cheered with excitement only for Corden to then drop the news that he agreed only to a one-year extension which will be his last as the show’s host. “This will be my last year hosting the show,” said Corden, holding back tears. “When I started this journey, it was always going to be just that. It was going to be a journey, an adventure. I never saw it as my final destination, you know? And I never want this show to overstay its welcome in any way. I always want to love making it. And I really think in a year from now that will be a good time to move on and see what else might be out there. Okay? “But I’ve got to tell you, we are not leaving today. We still have a year to go and we are all determined to make this the best year we have ever had making this show. We are going to go out with a bang. There is going to be Carpools and Crosswalks, and sketches, and other surprises. And there will be tears. There will be so many tears. ‘Cause this has been the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, it really has. I’ve never taken this job for granted. Ever. Not once. And… the fact that you watch us at home. Or you watch us online. Wherever you are, all over the world. The fact that we get to try and entertain you and spend time with you is an absolute privilege for me and every single person who makes this show. Here’s to the next 12 months and it’s going to be a blast, I promise you that.” Watch Corden’s comments and hear how the audience reacted below.
