Potential SAG-AFTRA Strike & Daytime Soaps
And these days, only the parent series are doing well. Their spinoffs, not so much. GMA3 is barely doing numbers higher than it did two years ago and the TODAY sequels have just faltered. Then again, the parent shows have long since missed their heyday numbers.

ARTICLE: Potential Actors Strike Won’t Impact Daytime Soaps Due to Separate SAG-AFTRA Contracts
Receiving a 97.91% approval rate from those who voted (47.69% of eligible voters cast ballots), SAG-AFTRA members earlier this month overwhelmingly supported a potential Actors strike should one be called by union leaders but don’t count on daytime soap actors to be on picket lines in the same fashion as WGA members whose contract expired on Tuesday, May 2. In a post reminding the industry of the distinction between SAG-AFTRA contracts, Deadline points out that the union is currently negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television (AMPTP) over a new TV/Theatrical Contract that does not impact daytime television, which falls under the National Code of Fair Practice for Network Television Broadcasting, also known as the Network Television Code. The current TV/Theatrical Contract concludes on June 30 and should a deal not be met, SAG-AFTRA has been authorized by its members to strike, effective July 1. For soap opera actors, their most recent contract was signed in 2022 (retroactive to July 1, 2021) and covers morning news shows, talk shows, serials (soap operas), variety, reality, game shows, sports and promotional announcements. Current programs covered by the contract include the likes of “Good Morning America,” “Tamron Hall,” “The Young and the Restless,” “Jeopardy,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Voice,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the Academy Awards and the Super Bowl, among a host of others. The contract runs through July 2024. In line with what Soap Opera Network reported earlier today (WGA Strike: ‘General Hospital’ Picketed, Allegations of “Scab” Writing In Progress at Daytime Drama Series), Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva reports that all four daytime soaps remain in production and are “currently working on new scripts.” She also points out that some of the people who claimed “Fi-Core” status during the 2007/2008 WGA strike remain active writers on daytime soaps. Joining the “Fi-Core” list this year according to an official list published by the WGA includes Sheri Anderson, a former head writer and current story consultant at “Days of our Lives,” Mark Pinciotti, a producer at “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and Michael Minnis, the co-head 2writer of “The Bold and the Beautiful.” When the strike is over, WGA writers returning to their writer’s room will have to adjust their storylines based on the direction taken by the “Fi-Core” writers, which could confuse viewers when material potentially shifts around suddenly when the changes take effect on the air. In the case of “Days of our Lives,” the impact won’t be felt for some time as the show currently tapes six months ahead while “General Hospital,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Young and the Restless” are roughly four to six weeks ahead, taping wise. Writing-wise, the material generally goes several weeks before taping commences. To help combat the strike even if slightly, all of the daytime soaps will be taking their traditional summer breaks with some extending it wherever possible to help mitigate any delays in production as they await a resolution to the WGA strike. Deadline reports that with the exception of “The Young and the Restless,” both “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital” will be taking off the month of July while “Days of our Lives” will begin its three-week hiatus starting this weekend. No matter what happens, however, all current cast members will be expected to return to work once the extended breaks are over even if there is a SAG-AFTRA strike in progress. Potential SAG-AFTRA Strike & Daytime Soaps
What I forgot, and got reminded by in the Deadline article, is that soaps are literally the ONLY productions still running with no hope of shutting down. So why aren't networks producing more of them? If they could care less about a strike impacting their productions, why not go out and produce more of them? They are WAY cheaper to produce than a lot of TV content and don't take as long to edit like reality TV does, particularly with the insertion of those personality comments needed for each high point in a reality storyline. Just a thought.

ARTICLE: Peacock and AEG Sign Multi-Year Naming Rights Agreement; Rebrand Includes Peacock Theater and Peacock Place
Earlier this week, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and NBCUniversal’s Peacock announced a multi-year agreement where Peacock gains exclusive naming rights to AEG’s L.A. LIVE Theater and Outdoor Plaza beginning Tuesday, July 11. The service will also become the exclusive streaming partner of the four million-square-foot Downtown L.A. Sports and Entertainment District. As part of the rebrand to Peacock, the 7,100-seat concert and special events venue, formerly known as Microsoft Theater, will be named Peacock Theater, and the entertainment district’s 40,000 square-foot open-air plaza, formerly known as XBOX Plaza, will be known as Peacock Place. The agreement, brokered by AEG Global Partnerships, strategically aligns the brands and establishes Peacock as the exclusive streaming partner of L.A. LIVE. “Like Peacock, L.A. LIVE is at the epicenter of premium original entertainment, exhilarating sports, one-of-a-kind experiences and extreme fandom,” said Kelly Campbell, President of Peacock, and Direct-to-Consumer, NBCUniversal. “Through Peacock Theater and Peacock Place, we’ll have the opportunity to bring all the elements of our brand to life with the millions of fans who visit L.A. LIVE each year, while partnering with the incredible team at AEG to further cement Peacock as the ultimate destination for audiences.” “We are ecstatic for the opportunity to be able to partner with the amazing leadership team at Peacock for this long-term relationship,” said Nick Baker, Chief Operating Officer of AEG Global Partnerships. “The content within the Peacock platform is ideal for our audiences and the synergies between both organizations around our variety of events is limitless.” “We are incredibly excited for this groundbreaking partnership with Peacock and AEG,” said Lee Zeidman, President, Crypto.com Arena, Peacock Theater and L.A. LIVE. “We are looking forward to the opportunity to collaborate with Peacock to create new content and programming to complement our existing roster of amazing concerts, awards shows and special events we are known for at all of our iconic L.A. LIVE venues.” According to Peacock, the comprehensive new agreement gives the streamer enhanced brand presence across L.A. LIVE including significant interior and exterior signage at Peacock Theater, fixed signage at Peacock Place, a branded content studio, and customized fan activations and brand integrations throughout select premium locations of the sports and entertainment district. Additionally, Peacock will engage fans via signature digital signage elements, including a brand-new, dedicated LED marquee, located prominently at the corner of Figueroa and Olympic Blvds., one of downtown L.A.’s busiest intersections. The forthcoming dedicated LED marquee will feature two, state-of-the-art video boards permanently attached to L.A. LIVE’s façade and will provide Peacock with 100%share of voice, 365 days a year. With this new signage, Peacock can highlight its latest content including key series premieres, promotions, and special events taking place at L.A. LIVE over the course of the partnership. Once complete, the largest of the two new signs will measure more than 29 feet high and 56 feet wide. The second will stand at more than 29 feet high and 88 feet wide, providing Peacock with premium exposure to millions of people each year. The signs will connect at the corner, with one facing Figueroa and the other facing Olympic and will remain a permanent fixture at L.A. LIVE for the length of the partnership. With the rebrand, it’s likely that future in-person events featuring the show’s cast, specifically “Day of DAYS,” will now be held at the L.A. LIVE complex going forward. Back in those days, the best source for WGA strike info was by Nikki Finke during the infancy of Deadline when it was known as Deadline Hollywood Daily (pre-acquisition by PMC), but I don't ever recall seeing picket info re: the soaps either through pictures or articles. I guess one could search that site's old articles written by Nikki to find out, but again, I don't recall anything that stood out to me then. I usually retain useless info like that.

ARTICLE: R.I.P. Brett Hadley – Actor Who Played Carl Williams on ‘The Young and the Restless’ Dies at 92
Brett Hadley, the actor who made a name for himself portraying detective Carl Williams on “The Young and the Restless” from 1980-1990, and again from 1998-1999, has died. The 92-year-old passed away on Wednesday, June 14 of sepsis at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, according to his friend of 30 years, Darcy Lee, The Hollywood Reporter stated. “He was a wonderful, sweet and kind man,” said Lee of her friend in a statement released to the outlet. In a post, Lee noted Hadley’s last moments, saying, “We talked about movies and art.. and we laughed a lot! He even made me laugh on his death bed.” She added, “He waited to pass tonight until my show was over and I walked out of the theatre. He took his last bow as I got into the car to come home. I will miss you terribly Brett Hadley – and thank you for being in my life.” Born September 25, 1930, in Louisville, Kentucky, studied drama at the University of New Mexico before segueing to the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Overall, Hadley amassed more than 30 television and film credits to his resume, including guest starring roles in such shows as “The F.B.I.,” “Police Story,” “Highway to Heaven,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Colbys,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “The Invisible Man,” and “The Waltons,” among others. “It is with a heavy heart that I have to say goodbye to my sweet friend Brett Hadley,” wrote Mary Ann Halpin in a Facebook post. “He has been my friend since I was 19 ears [sic] old. We were in an acting class and were the bad kids in the class. We sat in the back and giggled. I remember us sitting in his coverable WV in front of my apartment in Burbank under a maple tree with the leaves falling into the car. We were stoned and pretending we were driving through the country. We hiked Mount Whitney together with my little brother Johnny who was only 16 at the time (he’s now 65). He was at our wedding almost 39 years ago. Brett had a long career as an actor. He was 10 years on ‘The Young and the Restless.’ I was fortunate to get a small part on the show as a a loose woman named Angela. Amazingly, we were in the same scene together. I will miss his playful and deep conversation, his funny flirty giggle and twinkling eyes. He took his last bow and gracefully left us yesterday. Thank you to my dear sweet soul sister Darcy Lee Caplan for midwifing him out.” As police detective Carl Williams on “The Young and the Restless,” Hadley helped introduce viewers to Paul’s (Doug Davidson) family when then head writer and co-creator William J. Bell decided to expand the Williams clan. The dynamic also included Carolyn Conwell who played his deeply religious wife, Mary. Conwell died in 2012. Doug Davidson, Carolyn Conwell, Brett Hadley (“The Young and the Restless”) Photo by John Paschal/JPI Studios “Rest in Peace, Brett, who graced #YR with his talent for many years as ‘Carl Williams,’” read a tweet posted on the official Twitter handle for “The Young and the Restless” earlier today. Some of Hadley’s former castmates at the daytime drama series shared their sentiments about the actor with Soap Opera Digest as news of his passing circulated. “The passing of Brett Hadley is such sad news. He was a delight to work with and was an upbeat and happy presence in the halls and on the set. He was an old-fashioned guy. Always professional, but full of fun stories and laughs and was always happy to be on the stage. His memory speaks to a happy time, when soaps were in their heyday and the actors were legendary and larger than life. Rest well, old friend. You will be missed,” shared Beth Maitland (Tracy Abbott). Doug Davidson, Leslie Beavis, Brett Hadley in a scene from “The Young and the Restless” that aired January 7, 1999 Photo by John Paschal/JPI Studios “Brett had the best sense of humor ever and he and Doug [Davidson, ex-Paul] were a lethal pair to attempt to do a scene with. He was a wonderful actor and a great part of ‘Young and Restless’ in those years. He will be very missed,” said Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren Fenmore Baldwin). “Brett was the sweetest guy. Biggest smile and the believability of he and Doug Davidson being father and son was like no other!” commented Laurelee Bell (Christine Blair). Hadley is survived by his niece, Diane. Going over the Fi-Core list again, it's interesting how some of Hollywood's biggest names have opted into that status over the decades, including George Clooney, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Soderbergh and others. I also noted that Josh Griffith isn't on the list, which is odd since it's been known since the last strike. How odd. Ah, I know why now. The list is WGAW (WGA West). Griffith is a member of WGAE (WGA East).

My understanding is the show does have long-term scripts already written prior to the strike, so that could also be the reason why no one has been formally named right now, maybe down the line.

ARTICLE: WGA Strike: ‘General Hospital’ Picketed, Allegations of “Scab” Writing In Progress at Daytime Drama Series
EXCLUSIVE: With shutdowns impacting TV and film productions from coast to coast due to the ongoing Writers Guild strike, daytime soap operas have been relatively immune to picketing outside of their studios. That changed this week when picketers targeted ABC’s “General Hospital” after word began to spread that the daytime drama series not only has continued production since the strike began, but it has allegedly installed “Fi-Core” or “Financial Core” writers to take over writing duties. The Prospect Studios Photo by Errol Lewis for Soap Opera Network To find out what is happening on the ground, on Thursday, Soap Opera Network went to the Prospect Studios, where the series is taped, and spoke outside with strike captain Emilio Aldrich, a WGA member whose writing credits include “Arrow” and “Supergirl,” among others. Emilio Aldrich Photo by Errol Lewis for Soap Opera Network “We heard that ‘General Hospital’ is still filming in there and that they are also using Fi-Core writers (scab writers) in order to make the new episodes of ‘General Hospital.’ So, we are looking to shut down production,” said Aldrich when asked what brought the WGA members to the show’s Los Angeles-based studio. Thus far, production has continued on the series without interruption, but that won’t deter the group from continuing to picket outside. “We have not seen any studio trucks coming in or out since we’ve been here – we’ve been here for a few days now – and we intend to be here for as long as we need to be,” Aldrich noted when asked how much of an impact they’ve made thus far. Although there hasn’t been any recorded engagement between anyone associated with “General Hospital,” picketers want to make one thing clear: they are in it for the long haul. Photo by Errol Lewis for Soap Opera Network WGA “We’re just looking to show all the studios, whether that may be ‘General Hospital’ and all the other [soaps] included, that we are going to be out here for as long as it takes and that we think what we’ve asked for at the bargaining table is completely reasonable, considering the amount of money that they make, especially with regards to streamers and residuals, and myself and the other people that are here today are very focused and very determined that we’ll be out here as long as necessary in order to get what we’re looking for.” In a May 12, 2023 article by Vulture, “Days of our Lives” head writer Ron Carlivati said, “Our unique circumstance is our show’s on every day of the year.” Noting the use of “Fi-Core” writers, he added, “So unlike a lot of these shows that aren’t in production, our show is in production right now. And the shows don’t stop. They replaced us in 2007 when I worked at ‘One Life to Live,’ and I can only assume they’re replacing us right now. I’m being replaced on day one by other people.” WGA writers opting to go “Fi-Core” revoke their union status while choosing to take advantage of the benefits of the WGA contract. Essentially, they can’t vote in WGA elections, run for Guild office, attend Guild meetings and other events, or participate in the Writers Guild Awards. The WGA, however, continues providing services such as health insurance, pension and residuals. Of the 28 writers who went “Fi-Core” during the last WGA strike, a majority of them were writers for daytime soap operas, including Josh Griffith, the current head writer and executive producer of “The Young and the Restless.” According to Deadline, days after the strike began, the WGA launched a reporting website for strikebreakers, wherein members “must inform the Guild of the name of any writer you have reason to believe is engaged in scab writing or other strikebreaking activity,” according to the guild’s Strike Rule #9. “To the extent possible, you should be specific about the nature of the violation, including the date and place of the violation, the name of the struck company involved, and the name of the project, if any.” Members added to the Fi-Core list this year includes Sheri Anderson, a former head writer and current story consultant at “Days of our Lives,” Mark Pinciotti, a producer at “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and Michael Minnis, the co-head writer of “The Bold and the Beautiful.” When reached for comment on this story by Soap Opera Network, ABC said, “We have no comment and do not have anything to provide.” Note: The post WGA Strike: ‘General Hospital’ Picketed, Allegations of “Scab” Writing In Progress at Daytime Drama Series appeared first on the Soap Opera Network website. Among the three scripted programs, only “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.771 million) saw a week-to-week increase, adding +27,000 viewers over the week ago. Meanwhile, “The Young and the Restless” (3.244 million) and “GMA3: What You Need to Know” were again the only daytime broadcast shows to see an increase among Total Viewers compared to their performances in 2021. “General Hospital” (2.069 million) aired a repeat on Friday, June 9 due to ABC News coverage of the federal indictment. The repeat did not factor into the show’s weekly average which is based on four days (Monday through Thursday). “The Talk”** aired repeats all week and is excluded from the rankings. ARTICLE: Debmar-Mercury and Sherri Shepherd Name New Executive Producers for ‘Sherri’ Ahead of Sophmore Season
Following the exits of executive producer David Perler and co-executive producer Suzanne Bass last month, producer Debmar-Mercury announced today new executive producers for “Sherri,” the popular syndicated daytime talk show hosted by Sherri Shepherd. “Sherri” will wrap its award-winning first season on Friday, June 16. Emmy-winning producer Fernita Wynn has been promoted to executive producer and showrunner of “Sherri,” starting with the show’s second season. Joelle Dawson-Calia will also be upped to executive producer, with Siobhan Schanda and Dan Fitzpatrick rising to become co-executive producers. They have all been with the show since its launch in the fall of 2022 and will work alongside Shepherd and her producing partner Jawn Murray, who are both executive producers for “Sherri.” Siobhan Schanda, Fernita Wynn, Jawn Murray, Sherri Shepherd, Joelle Dawson-Calia, Dan Fitzpatrick (“Sherri”) Photo by Andrew Werner/Debmar-Mercury “I’m thrilled to have Fernita Wynn promoted to executive producer and showrunner and lead the production team at ‘Sherri’ for season two. I’m also happy to announce the elevation of Joelle Dawson, Siobhan Schanda and Dan Fitzpatrick, who will work alongside Jawn Murray and me as we continue to bring our ‘good time’ to daytime,” says Shepherd. “I’m grateful for this rockstar TV team that helped make the first season of ‘Sherri’ a success and the No. 1 new talk show in daytime. Expect the unexpected as we embark on our second season!” The promotions of Wynn and Dawson-Calia, both formerly serving as the talker’s co-executive producers, as well as Schanda and Fitzpatrick, most recently senior supervising producer and supervising producer, respectively, come as Debmar-Mercury has set the second season premiere of the nationally syndicated talk show for Monday, September 18. Earlier this year, the FOX Television Stations renewed “Sherri,” the No. 1 new nationally syndicated daytime talker from Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury, for two years through the 2024-25 season. As the show enters its sophomore season in 2023-24, Sherri continues to be cleared in 98 percent of the U.S., including on other leading broadcast groups such as Sinclair, Nexstar and Cox. The weekday talk show originates from New York’s Chelsea Studios in front of a live studio audience. In its first season, the show garnered an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Talk Series and also received four Daytime Emmy Nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Daytime Talk Series Host for Shepherd. The show is also a Bronze Telly Award Winner for its season one “Fun.Joy.Laughter.” digital launch campaign. ARTICLE: ‘General Hospital’ Again Preempted on Tuesday Due to Breaking News Coverage
As expected, due to ongoing ABC News coverage surrounding the federal indictment against former President Donald J. Trump, “General Hospital” was once again preempted on Tuesday, June 13. As a result, all episodes are being pushed back by one day, with today’s scheduled episode now set to air today, June 14. This is the second time in less than a week in which the daytime series was preempted due to news coverage surrounding the former president. In place of an original, in timezones not impacted by ABC News coverage of Trump being arraigned at a Miami federal court, the network broadcast a repeat episode of “General Hospital” first aired on Friday, April 29, 2022. In the episode, Josslyn (Eden McCoy) arrives at General Hospital. Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) tells Michael (Chad Duell) she doesn’t want to be alone. Brando (Johnny Wactor) tries to calm Sasha (Sofia Mattsson). Ava (Maura West) is not unimpressed. Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) eavesdrops on Spencer (Nicholas Chavez). On Friday, June 12, Jack Smith, Special Counsel for the Department of Justice, laid out the 37-count indictment against the former president wherein Smith told the world, “I invite everyone to read it in full to understand the scope and the gravity of the crimes charged. The men and women of the United States intelligence community and our armed forces dedicate their lives to protecting our nation and its people. Our laws that protect national defense information are critical to the safety and security of the United States and they must be enforced. Violations of those laws put our country at risk.” Click here to download a copy of the full 44-page indictment. In a tweet, the official “General Hospital” handle noted the preemption, saying, “Due to ongoing breaking news coverage, today’s scheduled episode of #GeneralHospital will air tomorrow.” Watch a clip for the Wednesday, June 14 episode of “General Hospital” below.
