The only silver lining!

Watching Robert totter off with trick-ass Holly at this point was depressing, but I do think Tristan needs to retire. I am glad Elizabeth told Lucky off though. I get why people are infuriated with it but I think the only way to deal with what has become of the character is to have him backslide and be challenged - it makes sense for him that he'd do that. The problem with this, of course, is that this creative team rarely ever writes anything with depth or sustained focus for anyone. So I suspect what we'll get next is weeks or months of Lucky making an effort merely in the background of the main storylines (or talking about having done it offscreen) instead of having real substantive storyline about it or discussions about the issues, and over time and through osmosis that's what will settle the past. Which I find meandering and lazy.

OTOH, hey, it worked for Felicia in 2012.

They sure do love pairing Tabyana with tall guys lol wasn’t really the best first meeting for the two of them though. I hate when they make Trina sound like Joss. But we’ll see what happens.

The actor looks like Adain Bradley.

As for Robert and Holly, it’s just like with Heather: what was the point of everything that happened if they were going to be written out? I don’t get it.

I agree. Diane's hair has always looked funny. But, today, I was very glad that self-respect was on Diane's mind. I was surprised, though, at the vulnerability she showed.

Another thing, about Diane, for 2 days (at least I think time is passing) she has been the most kind, considerate, thoughtful friend to Alexis. I knew they considered each other besties but I had no idea Diane had it in her to be this kind of friend!!

Yeah, I don't think it was a great exit for Robert, but it's acceptable.  It all seemed slapped together last minute.

I really don't understand why Lucky isn't getting more focus.  He returned and then faded into the background.  The same thing happened with Jason for awhile when eventually, as you noted, things just went back to the way they were in the past with only the tiniest bit of effort.

I don't get this either.  It honestly makes no sense.  If both Holly/Robert are leaving (for now) the show could have just retconned Ethan to be their son and they had to go off and find him for whatever reason.

Sasha seems to be getting a story with the Willow/Michael/Drew mess, so it wasn't even necessary to give her something to do.

Very true.  I was thinking maybe the show clearly wanted to free JK/Cody up for something new and, no,  I don't believe it's Tracy.  Cody/Sasha could easily had a misunderstanding that led Sasha to get drunk and sleep with Michael and get pregnant.  They really didn't have to be blood related lol.

Nothing I could say about Trina and the new guy would be fair or appropriate other than to say I wish they'd cast the Black Quartermaine character that was rumored during PM's run instead. Do I find it surprising that the male of color who has appeared instead is a random newbie with no real ties, summoning the spectre of Bryan and Claudia? No.

As for Gio and Trina, I'll just say again that poor GM has a) a very nice body they seem intent on hiding and b) a character with the personality of amiable tofu, and he could be and do more. Am I surprised they didn't let her near him romantically after all? No.

THIS.

But I feel like...as a loose theory...that perhaps the New/Old Writers are kicking any PM story loose ends off the boat. Heather, the Drew Q, Nina/Drew, etc. to spin off into what will be their actual stories. Again loose theory.

I think I've said this before, but, here goes. In my opinion someone (know not who) is specifically blocking any major trimming of the cast. This theoretical person (or persons) likes  having a humongous cast & also probably likes being able to rotate among so many different people. I have a theory about who this is but that's all it is. I think it's Varni & the reason I think that is because I have long thought he doesn't know his hat from a door handle when it comes to soaps or to soap fans.

But, if it's not Varni, it's gotta be someone from Disney. To me it is clear they won't let people who know what they're doing to cut 15 people from this bloated cast.

And, this is more than enough opinion from me. Please, if you agree that it is someone, who do you think it is?

11-5

I know I'm going to shock @carolineg, but poor Diane. She's not my favorite side character, but even I felt sorry watching her today.

And by sorry, I meant her walking in on Robert and Holly. I guess I really zoned out on the Robert/Holly scenes on 11-4. So much so that I didn't realize they were close to kissing. And Holly with that smug grin on her face. Ugh. Cat that ate the canary look? Yes. But did I like it? Even though I love catfights, no. In that moment what could have been a nice triangle was made clear to be one-sided. I guess I liked that Diane saw the writing on the wall in the same episode and knew it was time to bounce.

Hmmm...I continue to like the gradual reveal that Sam died to the general PC community. This episode with Jason telling Diane (and SB selling that). Carly letting Willow and Sasha know. Alexis, Molly, and Kristina dealing with the aftermath with TJ. That felt that was all good. Except for Kristina making it about her. I rather the focus stayed on Alexis (NLG looked like hell) who only irked me when she wanted to be sure Molly would forgive Kristina. That said...it was pretty B plot this episode.

I thought I would enjoy Willow vs Sasha more. I was Team Sasha, but I found the scenes so weak energy. Not that Sasha was wrong. And look at what Willow immediately did.

Speaking of...so it happened? Willow and Drew had sex? And I felt...??? While it's definitely messy...and at a glance thru the board will be moreso...it was going to be messy beforehand. The only difference being that beforehand, I had everyone's POV and an opinion on it all. So outside of Willow being a big ole H#e, and Drew coming across as a creeper...I'm not sure what to think of them finally doing it. And Michael can't say anything since he had sex with Sasha. I mean their confrontation scenes better bring the heat cuz these Willow vs Sasha scenes, like I said, had weak energy. And Nina again an afterthought. Which seriously...this whole time it has gone on Willow really still doesn't know about Drew and Nina? Even I am sitting here going...wait...how?

And that ending? Well Carly ain't wrong. She knows better people than the police to deal with Sidwell. I'm still shocked it took him this long to make it to Port Charles. And just the fact he got onto the secure Q grounds and kidnapped Sasha. Wow. But...Jason to the rescue. lol.

    • I agree.  Rena doesn't seem to mind the lighter workload and seems happy though. Strangely, a lot of the veteran cast are without viable love interests-Sonny, Nina, Lois, Jason, Tracy, Alexis, Carly (Brennan doesn't count).  The show lacks serious interest in romance.
    • I just can't wait until next week when we can go back to a full weeks worth of episodes. 3 episodes and a mid-week gap has been so difficult to deal with, especially in light of how good the show is.
    • I always hoped they'd change Parker's paternity back to Phillip.  I guess it doesn't matter since Chloe is off the show currently.  I don't recall Holly or Maggie mentioning Parker, so it's not they are close to him.
    • I’ve reached the summer of 1998.  Until now, my impression has been that the show has steadily improved since the great quality dip of 1994, reaching as high as 8/10 in 1997. Sure, I could complain about a few things in 1997 (Claudia got wasted after her initial storyline; Thorne’s feelings for Taylor were a bit too sudden; the storyline where Sheila lived with James and Maggie while pregnant got rather boring; Mike periodically revisiting Sheila despite being on the run from authorities), but overall it was a very strong year.  I liked the Thorne/Taylor/Ridge triangle, the mystery plot about who shot Grant, the sham wedding to trap Sheila, Stephanie/Eric/Lauren, and Clarke manipulating his way back to working at Forrester. I even liked the Greenland storyline with Eric/Lauren/Rush, although I had expected to hate it. Maybe 1996 tops 1997 in raw soapy excitement (especially as Sheila got a chance to interact with a larger canvas of characters), but certain problems with overall storyline cohesion puts it somewhat below 1997 for me. Unfortunately, 1998 has turned out to be a bit of a speedbump, perhaps on par with 1995 levels of quality: - Maggie’s character really got trashed after James left her to be with Sheila, and the early 1998 storylines where she imprisoned Sheila in the house from Psycho, or installed those wires and mikes and such in her house to make her think she’s going crazy, were total GARBAGE. So much so that the latter storyline (and Maggie with it) pretty much disappeared into a limbo.  - I have mixed feelings about the twins plotline with Lauren. No way did Rush survive being shot with a crossbow through the chest, and the romance between Lauren and Rush’s good twin brother Johnny was rather dry to me. I did however enjoy the camp aspect of Rush taking his brother’s place to be with Lauren, and Eric rescuing her. But it doesn’t appear like Bell cared too much about the Johnny/Lauren romance beyond the twin storyline gimmick, and it too disappeared in an unsatisfactory manner (come on, why not hire Johnny’s actor for just 5 more episodes for an arc where he realizes Lauren is not over Eric, or JUST SOMETHING?) - Clarke wormed his way back to FC in late 1997, which had exciting storytelling potential, but then he disappeared almost entirely. Sad to see my favorite character wasted in this manner. Does he get anything interesting to do between now and the Morgan saga of 2000-2001? - The Thomas saga was entertaining in 1997, but it got stretched out too much, and made some of early 1998 tiresome, with Ridge having to decide YET AGAIN which woman he wants to be with. On the plus side, I like the plotline of Thorne being neighbors with Macy and Grant, and we’ve finally been introduced to the SORASed Rick/Amber/CJ crowd. The Stephanie/James/Sheila triangle is also starting, and it makes me excited (I remember seeing some if it in my childhood). I know Sheila, Grant, and James are all leaving soon, which I honestly kind of dread - between them and Clarke’s near-absence, it feels like herd is going to get culled too much in the near future. But I know there’s the familiar 1999-2002 to look forward to.
    • LOL - this is a perfect description, and that's what I loved about it! May be a bit campy, but it immediately caught my attention in a good way.  I'm not familiar with the Fishing Trip storyline, I'll have to look that up. I've noticed that about Josh, which has made him less attractive to me overall. He just yells a lot when he's not happy. Wow, Reva was married to HB!  LOL - "Always... eventually, and again"
    • I love your ideas. I would love to see Jack grown up this confused unhinged individual. He should hold a grudge against both Brooke and Taylor.

    • Lois's return has been a bust. So disappointing that the writers have never written for her. As with Tracy, the pool of GH vets is so thin, there's no one to pair her with. Doubtful they would go to the trouble of properly recasting a legacy character and then sticking  him with Lois; they're obviously not that invested. If she wants to be on this show, it'll be as a noisy grandma who stays in the background.
    • I love me some Anita and TT. They need to give her a good storyline and I know that it's coming.
    • @Franko Thanks for tagging me. A few days ago I was talking in another thread about the rise of "snarky" critics for TV shows in the '90s online recaps, but this is just more along the lines of a mauling. There's also the unspoken reality that films like Steel Magnolias were seen as movies for women, so therefore they sucked. Pauline Kael also had her share of blunt, at times incredibly nasty remarks, but the vitriol is often balanced by her love for film. I'm not seeing that here.  With that said, the comment about Field's work becoming unbearable describes how I felt when I tried to sit through her and Maura Tierney on ER.
