SFT did a successful modernization in the 70s by becoming more balanced with a mix of veterans and younger characters.  It even hit the top 4 in the mid 70s with a mini revival in the late 70s.

For some reason, GL seemed to have more energy in the 70s than ATWT, even if the sets and lighting weren't Y & R quality.

Edge's darker lighting worked for the crime and mystery vibe...it's 40s vibe worked.

I know Mary Ellis Bunim gets a bad rep at SFT for trying to make the show more than Jo and Eunice show but she did really modernize the show and yes the ratings went up enough to the point it quickly killed NBC’s Lovers & Friends, kept Ryan’s Hope at bay and during the Corrington years even rumored to expand to one hour. Perhaps if Bunim had more of stable head writer during those years it would have been better and at least there would be a strong middle person for whenever Bunim and Stuart clashed.

Love of Life had success when Labine was writing followed by DePriest, but then after DePriest left somehow the show absurdly hired Jean Holloway, who once created the soaps The Egg and I and First Hundred Years almost 30 years earlier. Holloway’s 1979 tenure I’ve read had simplistic soap stories not seen since the early 50’s or the days of radio soaps. Yikes. It nailed the coffin shut.

ATWT definitely stagnated in the late 70’s and it definitely shows from the synopsis I have read. Lisa’s son Chuckie is killed, Lisa barely grieves and tries to get back with Bob briefly? Yikes.

It's always seemed to me that ATWT going to the hour is really what knocked it off its pedestal. It was quintessential 70s soap before the expansion - old-fashioned but still juicy and watched by virtually everyone. Kim's introduction, Bob/Jennifer, the climax of the Dan/Liz/Paul/Susan quad, and Lisa/Grant/Joyce kept the pot boiling for a few years. Judging from the 1978 episode that's been around for a while now, the show expanded and new characters were added alongside so many who had already been on the show but never really established as significant to the canvas. I'm thinking of the likes of Natalie, Valerie, Jay, Carol, etc. Carol and Jay were on for, what, nearly ten years? And by the time he was killed off and she left, it was like they had never been on the show at all. Neither really had any family developed around them, they had no children who were poised to be major players in the future, etc.

If not for Emily and their connection to the Stewarts, Susan really would have fit in the same category after her 1979 exit.

In one of the synopses maybe 76/77 it read like a romantic merry go round.

Sandy was interested in Bob, who showed some interest in Valerie who was possibly interested in Dan etc

They just seemed to be teasing all these relationships but nothing concrete was being set up.

    • Brook Lynn has been working my last nerve for at least 2 weeks. I was so relieved when she blurted out her teen queen story to her grandmother who is the most wonderful person in the entire world!
    • Just caught up and these episodes were absolutely amazing! Ambyr Michelle was soooooooooo good, and I felt so bad for Eva, I actually teared up. I love that Andre was nice to her, that was my favorite Andre moment of the series thus far.

I don't need to warn you that if you like this & want to keep it download it. Now, isn't she positively amazing?!!! Well, IMO she is. This is only the first episode that I've got her in. I think there will be more.
    • All true, and all an enormous problem on this show. -- The business stories are maddening because none of it makes any sense, none of it has any connection to the real world. As you said, sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers, and job switching is not a storyline. -- The deck chairs are constantly rearranged on the Titanic -- that's what this show is. Summer, Chelsea, Sally, and Chloe have been in design for how long? And we've never seen ANYTHING from them. Carrying around an iPad isn't enough. BOLD is terrible, but at least they show us dresses from Kohls and jewelry from Amazon. -- I know it's baked into the DNA of the show, but I will never enjoy seeing Jabot and Newman treat each other as if no other companies exist in the entire world. A new magical line of cosmetics is not going to bring down a company like Jabot. -- This is a writing problem, not a budget problem. An enormous amount of cash is not needed to write compelling business stories and show real products. This is writer LAZINESS.
    • Right? GOD FORBID Vanessa be allowed to cut her own mother-in-law down to size, when REVA REVA REVA needs a rival to sharpen her claws on. RME I mean, they could have, but Long and Curlee (like most HW) seemed to forget about characters once they left town. If they mentioned Trish five times in the ten years she was gone, I'd be surprised.  Yeah, Alex didn't really do friendship, other than Lillian. And most of the time, Henry.  And somehow, by the time she leaves, Sonni is some friend of Mo's? Mo is just everyone's default "friend". SMH.
    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
