Here's what I would do, if I couldn't fire / hire any new staff for any of the soaps. On Sabrina's Hospital, I would change the time slot to a half hour five days a week, airing at 4:30pm. I would tell RC / FV to get rid of all the useless recurring characters (this is only if staff couldn't change) and non-major storylines. I would limit contract characters to 25 and recurring to 10. I'd basically make it the cheap soap it is. On DAYS, I would keep it the same, expect taking a month break every summer. This would help get filming get caught up to normal over the years (4 weeks compared to 4 months) I'd also move it to 3pm, so more people can watch it when they are getting home from work. I'll do the CBS soaps later .

I don't think half an hour is the best bet either. B&B is half an hour and that shows tends to make me lose interest because it mostly focuses on the same people. Bringing the show down to half an hour means the cast needs to be cut down as well and that only a select few is going to get any major focus. Same with time changes. If people aren't watching the show during what is typically lunch hours there's no guarantee moving it around the schedule will make a significant increase in viewership. There are plenty of people sitting at home during the daytime hours watching TV but not these network soaps.

    • If NBC could have for seen the ratings of Lovers & Friends (the replacement for Somerset).. they would have for sure kept Somerset on the air longer. https://jason47.com/days/ratings1976.html  (ratings for Somerset in the final year) https://jason47.com/days/ratings1977.html (ratings for Lovers & Friends short run...getting as low as a 2 rating).

    • I liked them, too, and was really disappointed it never went anywhere. The whole art theft story was ridiculous, but they had a nice chemistry. Certainly nicer than Alan with Christine. With her, he looked like the funny uncle. The worst thing they did to Bolger, IMO, was having Phillip write that DREADFUL novel and dramatizing it while he wrote it. GAG, that has to be in the running for one of their worst storylines that didn't involve wacky things like clones or time travel. Soaps rarely do school storylines, or don't do them for very long. Not the case so much in the early days of soaps, but after GH took off in the late 70s other soaps took their lead and would catapult teens/young adults into adult stories right away. That's one reason Phillip and Mindy ended up with so many ex-spouses--they started getting married really young. They shipped Dina and Cameron off really fast after high school and stuck Alan Michael in a marriage storyline with Harley. Did he EVER go to college? I don't think so. It may also partly explain why Quint and Annabelle had to go, beyond TPTB wanting to do a cast sweep. Teaching is not a profession that plays well on a soap. Quint definitely had to quit being Indiana Jones, because that wore thin really fast, but they didn't do him favors by making him a professor. If they wanted to keep him, they should have done what they did with Amanda (who was in another dead-end soap job, concert pianist)--have him work at Spaulding as one of the major stockholders.
    • Judith McConnell (Augusta) and Denise Alexander (Lesley) were great screen partners on GH.  They got into some stellar arguments in character in the medicine room.
    • He also commented that Brad knows that fans are sick of the constant fake deaths on this show: Finn, Sheila, etc and that it's hard to take this seriously if it's another fake death

    • I just don't think Brad Bell has it in him to actually kill off Liam. He should have killed off Eric when he had the chance. I know John McCook is an original cast member, but Eric is even more useless than Liam. Eric should have died and then it would be revealed that he died without a valid will, so Donna, as his wife, inherits everything, including his shares in Forrester Creations.
    • I think we all will, isn't that how soaps work? lol
    • ^^ I'll believe it when it actually happens.
