January 19, 200620 yr Member Forget the exact translation, but its somewhere along the lines of British Academy of Film and Technical Arts... Basically its the British Oscars.
January 19, 200620 yr Author Member BAFTA = British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and as Shawn said the British equivilent of the American Academy Awards. The reason the BAFTA's are so important is that voters for the Academy Awards overlap the BAFTA's in that there are hundreds of BAFTA voters who are also Academy members who will determine the Academy Award nominees. It has never been firmly stated just how much the BAFTA membership and the AMPAS membership overlaps, but rumours have it around 200-500 members, so that is why the BAFTA's hold significance in determining what Academy Members will do come Oscar nomination time.
