I bought Season 3 of Barney Miller earlier this year because it includes some of the funniest episodes (the laced brownies, the quarantine). Dietrich was honestly not one of my favorite characters on the show but this news surprised me. I was actually wondering more about Hal Linden. When I saw him on Hot In Cleveland, around the time I was watching the Barney Miller DVD, he looked so old and it jarred me to remember how much time has passed since then. Max Gail, OTOH, is still built like an ox.

Edited to add: The article doesn't mention it but the cause of death was cancer.

    Sad news :( I love me some Barney Miller. Dietrich was a very dry character so he didn't bring big laughs, but once he's there, it's hard to imagine the precinct without him. RIP!!
