I feel as if I would have appreciated Amanda more if they had leaned into how privileged and spoiled she was. As far as I could tell Sandra Ferguson's Amanda was just a nice well-meaning girl who occasionally got into scrapes  because she happened to look like someone's dead wife.

They were inconsistent with the presentation of Sam's art. If I recall correctly they started as pretty abstract and then he had his realistic baby Alli portraits eventually followed by a perhaps slightly impressionistic scene involving the Red Swan. The baby Alli portraits struck me as a bad choice.

Another World - January 2, 1989

You can't buy yourself happiness.

What an episode! Wow. The show was must-see TV from the first minute till the last!

Let's begin! Shall we?

It's New Year's eve in Bay City and everyone is getting ready to say Goodbye to 1988 and Hello to 1989! In Amanda and Sam's apartment the guests are cheerful and in great mood, with the exception of Iris, who is staring out the window full of jealousy. That woman can't stand seeing happy people!

In her trademark-intelligent way, Rachel put Josie under heavy questioning about her plans for the future. Her innuendoes referred to Josie being a little too friendly with the boys.  She interrogated that girl in the disguise of a friendly chat. Josie felt on the spot and couldn't talk her way out of it. Lucky for her, Mathew grabbed her just when the mother-lioness Rachel was expecting an answer.

Mary's good deed in helping Pilara is backfiring on the whole family! Pilara came under false pretense to wish Mary Happy New Year, in order to steal the key to Vince's restaurant so that she and Reuben can rob it later that evening. When they arrived at the restaurant later in the evening, to execute their plan, they didn't expect that John had organized a surprise-private dinner for Sharlene. Realizing that they can't get out without being noticed, the two thieves hid under the bar.

Vicky (how I missed seeing my annoying little fox) was showing Jamie her gift for him - their new house. Jamie was disturbed by the fact that the house is the one just across the estate that he and Lisa wanted to buy. Vicky, this is the best way to making a man despise you. You are torturing Jamie and emotionally forcing him 24/7!  I think these two break the record for the most TOXIC relationship ever. I would not even call it a relationship - it's more of a high-school competition and obsession for Vicky.

Iris found herself once again competing for Daddy's attention with Amanda! Later she said something so wicked to her half-sister... that I laughed out loud. When talking about her relationship with Sam, Amanda reassured Iris that they were good and feeling better than ever as a couple, to which Iris replied - I'm so happy. I wouldn't want anything to stand between you. I was screaming! The NERVE that woman has to lie through her teeth like a snake! Carmen Duncan is a gold mine for this show!

In the end of the episode we saw a beautiful montage of people celebrating the countdown to 1989, John and Sharlene dancing together... not realizing that Pilara and her boyfriend have accidentally set a fire in the kitchen. Oh, the suspense! Can't wait for tomorrow!

Now that you mention it, I remember reading about his plans for rebooting Guiding Light sometime before his death.  I believe this was just after he left Y&R.  As I recall, Rauch said he had been in contact with some of the actors, and perhaps a few writers, and they were interested in joining his effort.  But, at least in the interview I read, Mr Rauch never mentioned anything about obtaining the rights to GL, or having the blessing of P&G.  So who knows if it would have ever come about??  But Rauch was a power-house executive producer (despite his MANY flaws).  So if anyone could have got Guiding Light back into production, Paul Rauch was the man to do it.

I described what you found to Eddie & he found this:

Hunter (1984–1991): Season 3, Episode 13 - Straight to the Heart

MAKES ME FEEL LIKE LOS
ANGELES IS 5,000 MILES AWAY.

LOS ANGELES, WHERE'S THAT?

IT'S IN ANOTHER WORLD.

Tough to say if its a meta reference to the soap....

I happen to agree. I know one of the people from the show that he was talking to was Grant Aleksander & he is one sharp cookie. But, you're right about not knowing if P&G would have even gotten on board.

I think Donna was replying to me -- we were trying to locate an episode of Hunter (an NBC cop series) that mentioned Another World. I had identified the episode and it looks like Eddie Drueding found it on Youtube. A witness to a crime confirms that she knew when something happened because she had just turned on Another World.

Thanks, @Contessa Donatella.

Ah okay, I thought it was for me because she quoted me, but it was probably a quoting bug. But thank you for telling me what the video is about! I will search for it in other sites to watch it. I love things like this. I have no idea why the VPN Chrome add-on doesn't unblock it. They must see that my youtube profile is based in Germany.

One of the twins was dying. Carl had a big speech, although I can't remember the exact wording, where he said he would sell his soul. The baby then recovered. I think afterward Carl had a reaction at the christening when the priest asked them to renounce Satan. After that it was dropped.

My attempt to download it was an epic failure. Of course not everyone is stubborn enough to try to download something it tells you upfront doesn't exist in your country. But it means we don't have a copy of the delightful AW content! DARNIT. Eddie wonders if any affiliate actually broadcast AW at 1 pm. Me, too. Anyone have any idea?
