He really thinks so? In which movies precisely?

The last one I watched was the Willy Wonka thing. Depp was also not very good in that, in my opinion.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You think he was trying to be daring there — how?

Charlie came from the same guy who's penning Dark Shadows. And who also wrote Big Fish and co-wrote Corpse Bride.

When I think Burton helmed such films as Mars Attacks!, I have to laugh!

But sometimes it entertains me and I can't wait to see Alice. :)

I am REALLY worried this will be too over the top gothic, but oh well...

I have mixed feelings about Burton. Carl, gotta disagree I don't think he wants people to find him daring, I think hejust does what he does but it's never been really daring--stylized to the top, sure, but... I love some of his films (although I find they never grow well on me--I liked Big Fish in the theatres, less later, loved Edward Scissorhands as a kid, less now, etc) I do think his weakness, no matter who does the script, is always with telling the story--images, tone, etc, he can be stellar at. And of course I'm grateful he made a film of Sweeney Todd--being as obssessed with Sondheim as I am, and Sondheim liked the film, but I'mkindamixed onit (partly I grant because they cut about half the music including many of my fave moments)
