Producers Pick '24,' 'Office'

NBC, FOX lead guild nominees for best in TV

December 5, 2006

B.J. Novak and Steve Carell of 'The Office'LOS ANGELES -- You may have already thought that shows like "24," "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Office" are among the best productions in TV. The people who actually do the producing agree with you.

The Producers Guild of America has tapped those three series, along with "Arrested Development," "The Sopranos," "American Idol" and others, as nominees for the guild's annual awards. NBC and FOX gathered the most nominations with four each; ABC, CBS and HBO have three apiece.

The awards cover shows produced between Sept. 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006, which explains why none of this season's new series made the cut. The guild also held up its nominees for TV movies and miniseries over credit issues, Variety reports. Those nominees will be announced with the feature-film contenders in January.

The nominees in the comedy and drama categories read a lot like the most recent Emmy list, with four of the dramas and three comedies showing up in both spots. "Lost" replaces Emmy nominee "The West Wing" in the guild's drama list, while "Weeds" and "My Name Is Earl" sub for "Scrubs" and "Two and a Half Men" among the comedies.

HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is also a comedy nominee. The guild initially included the show among its nominees last year before realizing it hadn't aired during the eligibility period. "Scrubs" replaced it.
