  1. Knowing how network brass is, I'm stunned they haven't fired Meghan earlier for simply being too fat. In the last year or so, she's looking more and more like Mama Cass, only without the golden voice and sparkling personality.

I would say that most of the time, recasts in primetime TV shows have not worked very well, but that is because the original actors were so much better than their replacements. When the recasts actually succeeded, it was because the second actors in the roles were either as good as, or much better than,  the original ones. Most replacements on the original Dynasty failed because the new actors were not very good, or not right for the roles. But Meredith MacRae did work out quite well on Petticoat Junction, and Pat Priest seemed to be accepted by The Munsters' viewers.

Meredith Baxter was accepted as Nancy Maitland on Family; she was a much better choice for the part than the first actress, Elayne Heilveil. Ditto Tracey Needham who took over the role of Paige Thatcher in the second season of Life Goes On.

I think that the acceptance of a new actor all just depends on how long the first one was in the role, and how talented the new one is.

    I agree.

The only primetime recast that worked for me was Meredith MacRae as Billie Jo on Petticoat Junction. While she was a world apart from the trashier version of the character they had with Gunilla Hutton and whoever the other one was, I thought she was a beautiful woman with real screen presence and a lovely singing voice as well.

The woman who was recast as Bobbie Jo was also decent enough in her bubbly supporting role.

The only problem I had with the MacRae recast is that there was all kinds of unintended chemistry between her and Mike Minor, and I spent the last years of the show convinced Steve and Billie Jo were having a secret affair.

Pat Priest on the Munsters was well accpeted as well,

  4. This is one of the biggest examples of this aggregious crap that is happening in our food supply. And many people under 40 don't even know any different, because these products have always been like this for them.  Below, is the current ingredient list for a Swanson Salisbury steak TV dinner:

Gravy (Water, Mushrooms, Onions, Modified Corn Starch, Sherry Wine, Flavor [Salt, Beef Stock, Beef Fat, Maltodextrin, Potassium Chloride, Hydrolized Soy, Corn and Wheat Gluten Protein, Yeast Extract, Vegetable Stock (Carrot, Onion, Celery), Natural and Artificial Flavors, Potassium Lactate, Onion Powder, Dextrose, Sugar, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, Soy Sauce (Soybeans, Salt, Wheat), Modified Corn Starch, Tomato Powder and Citric Acid], Wheat Flour, Onion Powder, Sugar, Cream Powder Blend [Heavy Cream, WheyProtein Concentrate, Whey], Caramel Color, Salt, Yeast Extract, Spice), Cooked Salisbury Steak Patty (Beef, Water, Pork, Textured Soy Protein Concentrate with Caramel Color, Bread Crumbs [Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Enriched with Niacin, Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Dextrose. Contains 2% or less of: Margarine (Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil with TBHQ and Citric Acid as Preservatives, Water, Mono and Diglycerides [BHT, Citric Acid], Beta Carotene for Color (Corn Oil, Tocopherol], Vitamin A Palmitate). Soy, Wheat, Eggs, Milk.

And here is a scan of a package of the same TV dinner from 1975:

And here is the 1975 ingredient list:

Beef, Beefstock, Fried Potatoes, Apples, Peas, Reconstituted Onions, Water, Enriched Wheat flour, Sugar, Enriched Bread crumbs, Eggs, Margarine, Carrots, Tomatoes, Salt, Celery, Modified Food Starch, Vegetable oil, Nonfat Dry milk, Flavoring, leavening, Dehydrated onions, and caramel color.

The only difference is the new one has a chocolate brownie in place of the apple cobbler, and mashed potatoes in place of tater tots... but we all know this would not make any appreciable difference in the additives and preservatives.

I realize that many presidents haven't been exactly young when they've been elected, but Bernie Sanders turns 78 this year. Isn't that a bit too old?

Since Trump is the oldest ever elected so far, I guess people don't care. If he gets a young running mate... that would be very good for him.  Such as Beto O'Rourke. And he may just deliver Texas and it's 45 electoral votes.

Damn gurl, you went dark! 😀 But as long as we're doing this, my favorite scenario is that he just strokes out in the middle of a rally. Second favorite is that he's struck by lightning on the golf course.

You think too small. Struck by lightning on the golf course with Pence at his side. So we can say hello to President Pelosi.

Same here.  Whenever my mom mentions Trump, or the GOP, I sit quietly and wait for an opportunity to change the subject, or else MY blood pressure will shoot to the roof, lol.

The "facts" she quotes are almost always biased, and they're almost always wrong, too.  But how do you argue with someone -- especially when that someone is your mother, and they're convinced they're right?  I've tried citing actual sources, but she just dismisses it as (you guessed it) "fake news" and accuses me of being as arrogant and ignorant as my right-wing, pro-life, anti-vaxxer ex-sis in law.  And when I've told her why she shouldn't trust YT and FNC to be accurate, her response is, "Why would they make up stuff when they have the proof RIGHT THERE?".  I tell you, you just can't win.

If Fox news is feeding her the crap... then tell her she can't afford cable anymore, and just get TV with an antenna. That will at least cut off 1 stream of propaganda.

"Indentured servitude" is what white people call "slavery" to make themselves feel less like the scum of the earth.

    See also: "sharecropping."

Indentured servitude is nothing like sharecropping.... and BTW... the new term for "Indentured servitude" is "unpaid internship".

I'll admit it, I'm one of the people throwing shade at that Green New Deal. I read that paper and found it amateurish and shallow. I expected something with more depth instead it read like Princess Sparkle Pony's Earth Day Wish List.

I'd say your'e totally right on that.

I totally get how frayed and damaged the relationship became. But unless there are absolute legal reasons why they can’t use her image, I think they should serve the story and KSJ first, and his story is quite simply incomplete without *some* reference to Dru.

I know, I know. Forget it, Faulkner. It’s Chinatown.

They can't use her image without her permission. Unless it is in the context of an old episode in it's entirety.

  10. 16 hours ago, Faulkner said:

CBS is working extra hard to make it seem like Victoria Rowell and Drucilla actually never existed. It’s beyond ugly. It would be like honoring Eric Braeden without Melody Thomas Scott. It makes any KSJ tribute tainted from the jump.

This is such a gorgeous photo of him.

Vicky burned her bridge so bad, this is not surprising. CBS did the exact same thing with batshit crazy Dickson.

Sacha was incorrectly quoted in one of the British papers implicating that Anthony Newley was a pedophile. The paper retracted the statement and apologized.

Oh, that's good to hear. I had only seen a TV interview where she was asked about it.  I wonder if we will see Joan do a guest turn on "The Conners" next season, reprising her role as Cousin Ronnie? I'd love to see that.

I think if the northeast and the west coast were physically connected the U.S. might truly decide to break up.  Giving the enormity of our military industrial complex I can only image what that would look like if it happened. Much like the USSR breaking up I guess, with loose nukes here there and everywhere.

Oh, that won't happen. The reason they are so desperate to stop immigration of any kind, is that they know when the Latino population in Texas gets to critical mass, and the state flips, it's game over. Then of course, they will want the electoral college gone when that happens. Beto O'Rourke got more votes than any other democratic candidate in Texas history.

I wonder if he suggested Tank as a Malcolm recast.

Daytime has a long history of emasculating/cuckolding or vilifying black men. Little room for in between. They did the same with RJ on OLTL when Evangeline went to John. (And RJ had served the baddie role to Hank’s good guy earlier on.) So interesting how the writing for certain groups always follows the same patterns.

I've seen them more often than not, take a criminal or low life and "Redeem" them. They certainly did it with Jazz and Nathan.

I don't know what the story was or for whom. I only pointed it out to validate VRs interview since she's often times castigated for speaking out.

I'm not sure I believe characters aren't allowed to pitch stories for their own character. VR pitched Devon's foster care story and got it.

Oh yes... you can pitch a broad idea. Absolutely. Actually writing for the character is what is forbidden. I suppose I worded that a bit wrong.

  15. 3 hours ago, ajsp35801 said:

Tank saying that KSJ recently pitched him goes right in line with VR saying that KSJ pitched story after story that was denied. Had to point that out because I know some think she's a loon out of touch with reality.

But was the pitch for his own character? TPTB nevah allow an actor to write for their own character. They didn't even let Meg Bennett do that.

  16. 10 minutes ago, Faulkner said:

That’s a huge deal. Unfortunately, I don’t think the success of Neil inspired many imitators, which speaks to the limitations and failures of imagination from TPTB. We see many more Jesse Hubbards than Neil Winterses.

I think Bill Bell just took what he had done several years earlier with Brock Peters and Stephanie Williams and just expanded the idea to create the Winters family. Of course, connecting them to the canvas through Mamie. They became a complete fully fleshed out family, while Brock Peters' character was mostly limited to police work, although Stephanie's character got much more depth with her relationship with Tyrone and being Traci's best friend.

Learning about him has been the most extraordinary thing today. Even after two decades of watching him as Neil, I had no idea he had an entire career before Y&R. Just reading about his father! I don't how else to say this other than the entire industry failed him. My God he was a gorgeous, charming, naturally talented actor and he should have reaped roles. I can't speak about his personal issues, but when it comes to his career the industry should be ashamed. While I'm so grateful for the space being made today for actors of color, I'll shed more tears this man never got his moment in that space.

I'm not sure about that. He might have felt comfortable in daytime. There is a trade off, if you are a contract player, in daytime you have a certain amount of guaranteed, steady work... although the work is harder for lower pay than prime time or movies. A lot of actors appreciate the security in a very unstable industry.
