  1. Oh I'm not opposed to the idea or them doing it anyway they feel like they have to. I even think the scenes next week are really good. My only minor quibble is like I said that I'm not really wild about how farfetched they have to get to make it work and that they basically have to say "Beverly ghosted everyone for 20 something years" for it it fit. But again, only a minor quibble.

I'm hoping that Beverly and Troi don't fade away as the series progresses. Beverly starts off strong and it sounded like Troi gets some good stuff once she joins. The few reviews I've read don't mention anything about it but I hope by the end they aren't basically reduced to running behind Riker and Picard like they did in the movies. If this really is the final hurrah, then I hope they all get a chance to shine.

My surprise guest return theory is

    Spoiler

exactly the same as yours. I'm hoping it is because I feel like her and then Sela, who you mentioned earlier, are the two big characters out there that haven't been dealt with in a good way.

Also like I said, I'm super curious about who these other allies across the other Trek incarnations are and what that's all about. That can lean heavily into fan service and pandering if not done right.

  2. Now that everyone has seen the first episode, I'll mention the two minor issues I have with it.

Troi/Riker- him saying her and the daughter would appreciate the time away from him just seems like a way to cover Marina Sirtis not being available to film the first few episodes of the season. I'm sure it'll be fine in the end and lead to some nice scenes. I just feel like they could have come up with something better than relationship drama we know will be resolved in a few episodes once she's on the ship. I'll put the reason for why they're having issues in spoilers.

    Spoiler

They're still dealing with the death of their son and feeling it a lot more now that their daughter is older. Apparently Riker is extremely depressed about it and Deanna feels he won't talk to her and doesn't like he's funneling that into rejoining Starfleet, getting dangerous again, and leaving her and the daughter at home.

The new Crusher son- Again, I'm sure this will be fine and the actors seem extremely happy about it, but I still feel like it's veering a little to into fan fiction territory. Especially given who the obvious father is and how much she pushed Wesley on Picard and wanted him to be a father to Wesley. I know everyone could see this plot line coming a mile away though so whatever lol. I'm just interested in seeing what her explanation is for ghosting Picard and the others for over 20 years and taking off with her son is.

Overall I really liked it. I think I liked the second one more, which has a little less nostalgia bait and fan service. Really excited to see the last eight episodes.

Also theories and some mild spoilers-

    Spoiler

Definitely agree that I think this ties into Yesterday's Enterprise.

Apparently, episode 5 features a recurring 90s Trek character who a lot of people thought they'd never see again. Rolling Stone mentions this character makes Picard think about and face a choice he made during the latter years of TNG. I have a few guesses and I'll be interested to see if it's one of them.

Seen a few other reviews mention that this features allies and characters from across Star Trek history popping up, at least in the first six episodes people have seen. I think we're for sure getting some DS9 or Voyager cameos.

  3. @Vee I don't know how much she gets later on, but you'll be happy with how much Crusher there is at the beginning.

Also, this isn't really a spoiler, but you see Riker, Crusher, Picard, Seven, and Worf pretty early. Sounds like Geordi and Troi don't show up until the back half of the season.

A few general spoilers but nothing big, just about where the characters are-

    Spoiler

Riker and Troi are having martial problems. Geordi is the head of a fleet museum thing. Raffi is on some special undercover mission. Worf is tied up in that. Seven is regretting joining Starfleet somewhat.

  4. No spoilers, but I got to watch the first two episodes for a press thing today. I liked what I saw a lot. FWIW, I really liked the first season and I thought the second season had some good ideas and was fine for the most part considering all the backstage drama and Covid. This from what I saw is better than those two. I feel like a lot of people will be happy since I assume this is what they always wanted from this show in the first place.

My only quibble so far is that I think it might veer a little too far into nostalgia and I guess fan fic mode (when you see the episodes, you'll know what moments I'm talking about lol). That's a small worry though and since that seems to be what people wanted for the most part, I think it'll be well received.

I guess the US premiere was earlier today and most of the press either had screenings today or got screeners (of the first six episodes I think) and I'm already seeing big spoilers on twitter so avoid all that if you don't want to get spoiled on something big that happens in the first two episodes.

  5. Sorry, I didn’t know if we were supposed to spoiler spec or not lol

    Spoiler

But yeah that’s why I’m still in wait and see mode even with what is being implied and said. We’ll just have to see how it all shakes out  should be interesting either way and I’m glad Gates McFadden is finally getting something good to do after all these years

  6. @Vee I think they're implying that it's that

    Spoiler

they got together right after Nemesis ended, it ended badly, but they have a son that she either took off with or never told him about. Both McFadden and Stewart have been saying in their interviews that there's some sort of new family secret between that comes to light and that they haven't seen each other in over 20 years after things went south. There's also audition scenes and scripts floating around the internet from casting agencies and the scene is Picard with a son he's just reunited with. There's an actor in the cast that hasn't been announced officially yet- Ed Speelers- whose agency leaked that he's in the cast and that he's involved in a story with Crusher and Picard. Obviously this is all spec but seems to add to least Picard having a son with someone. I'd assume that person is Beverly given what the actors have been hinting at.

This site has gathered the evidence in better order than me and sources everything-

    https://trekcentral.net/what-is-beverly-crushers-secret-in-picard-season-3/

I had to drag my way through series 2 too, but very much looking forward to series 3. Stranger New Worlds though is also my favourite of the new Trek shows, although I've been liking Lower Decks too. The DS9 episode was really well done.

  7. Rumours and basically confirmation of what this "life changing" event is for Picard and Crusher is out there if you just look but I think what he says here is interesting about how it might go down. If the rumours are true, I'm interested to see how it all plays out.

Some more mild spoilers and interviews as the cast kicks off promo for the show-

London-residing Aussie here…. But always so glorious to see people like Rita Panahi go down in flames :D

Indeed! I usually avoid Sky News of course but I just had to take a look at how they were handling the news. They had even sent Rita and Laura Jayes over to cover the news in person. Another fail from Murdoch and his media. Hate to see it! 😄

  9. I don't know if any of the other Aussies here check in on this thread, but I took a look at Sky News to see how they were handling the results and Rita Panahi is despondent and in shambles. It's glorious!

  10. This is basically a miracle for the Dems, right? I haven't been following super closely but the past few days I saw people basically expected them to get slaughtered and have a red wave. Looks more like a red nothing lol.

Any real reason or ideas why this happened? I assume abortion is a big one.

  11. Australian news seems to think Democrats are going to either win Georgia outright or it goes to a runoff which the Democrat would most likely win. How do the other Senate races look?

Doesn't look like much of a red wave overall lol.

  12. It's officially been called now, thank god. It's been mentioned on Twitter but good on leaders like Macron, Biden, Albanese, Trudeau, and the other leftists leaders in Latin America coming right out of the gate congratulating Lula and legitimising the results. Makes it way less likely Bolsonaro will try something or attempt to claim it was rigged against him.

A lot of people wondered if Sela would be back, but tbh Sela was never very interesting or successful as a character. I do think Denise may appear as her to close that story out since they also had Wil Wheaton appear as Wesley last season, but I also wouldn't be surprised if she genuinely appeared as Tasha Yar, alive and well. We only have Sela's word that Tasha died in a Romulan prison.

I don't have any great desire to see to see Sela again either, but I've seen a lot of people like bummed out she hasn't popped up yet. I was just speculating since I've seen her basically say she's involved and they haven't shown any hint of what she could be doing. I wouldn't be surprised if she appears as Tasha somehow but I just can't help feeling they'll shove Sela in somehow.

I'm also thrilled Crusher is finally getting the focus she deserves. She was also completely underutilised in the movies and it's never made any sense to me that she wasn't there when Picard needed help these past two series.

I also saw people mention that that looks Thomas Dekker for a moment or two in the trailer. It might just be a coincidence but if not, that could be an interesting callback to Star Trek: Generations since he played Picard's son in that dream sequence.

Forgot to mention it before, but the "We're All Gonna Die" from Riker got a good laugh out of me. As great as it will be to see Geordi's kids, I hope we also get another appearance from Riker and Deanna's daughter because I thought that actress was such a gem and a really good fit.

  14. I figured Lore would be back since Brent Spiner was announced to be involved but my jaw dropped when I saw Moriarty. I haven't really been following the tea for this season but I don't think anyone had that on their radar.

Really intrigued about what the plot line here is though. I wonder if this is some thing where Amanda Plummer's character sends various TNG villains after them or something in the vein. Crusher says they're being hunted. Isn't Denise Crosby involved in this season too somehow?

I guess there's also the possibility that they activate Moriarty to try and defeat Lore since he was supposed to be the only one who could defeat Data.

Also, I don't think we got a glimpse of her in the teaser, but I think it's sweet that Levar Burton's daughter is playing one of Geordi's daughters.

  15. I mean, are we surprised about all that with Hasidic schools? I can't tell you how many former Hasidic Jews I've known in my life who made it to adulthood and basically knew nothing outside of the Talmud and could only speak Yiddish. It's bad. I attended Hebrew school growing up and every once in a while there'd be a former Hasidic kid whose family had left and again, they basically had no education or knowledge of anything. I don't want to disparage other Jewish people and how they chose to live and practice but I think we can all agree there are some severe issues with Hasidic Judaism that needs to be addressed.

I've seen a lot of negativity toward Charles and William even from non-Americans (even though the press tries and tries to pump some long-deflated life back into William and Kate as a beloved national couple), but I don't think that will affect the monarchy at present with the current Tory government (I imagine that is also why Charles is linking so closely to the PM, even planning a tour with her, in spite of his own liberal views). I think it may be more of a factor in a few years than it is now.

There's always going to be negativity but the fact is they have almost 70% approval from the British people which is only slightly lower than Queen Elizabeth. If they count in the Commonwealth, their approval is probably even higher. A lot of that is some apathy or just general neutral feelings but the point is that they're not universally reviled. They're actually fairly popular as far as royals go. Again, I'm pretty left wing and so are most of my acquaintances and friends and I know like two people who have issues with William and Kate. If Charles and then William and Kate steer the monarchy and issues they're interested in where it seems they're going to, then their popularity will probably even slightly rise.

Does anyone feel that the monarchy is about possibly to come an end now that Elizabeth has died? I just don't see the Brits giving a rats a** about it anymore now that she isn't there. And the love just isn't there for Charles or William.

It'll never end, especially since it's basically just a ceremonial thing now as others have mentioned and they're the main source of tourism in the UK. There's a lot of apathy in from some people but still a lot of love from others or people that think it's a tradition and should stay (even if they don't deeply care). Plus, like BetterForgiven mentioned, the love is still there in the Commonwealth and very strong in some places. A few people here in Australia have brought up becoming a Republic the past few days and immediately gotten shot down by people yelling that we can never get rid of the monarchy. Americans, no offense, always say stuff like the love isn't there for Charles or William; meanwhile, I'm drowning in people praising and loving them and supporting them, even people on the far left. The way people have been acting the past few days has been eye opening in realising how much support they have if you look past sections of twitter and certain groups of people. It's hard for Americans to understand how ingrained some of this is in people and society.

Anyway, not a royalist, but a lot of complicated feelings about this. My parents and my stepmother were all born under British colonial rule. All of my grandparents were saved by the British during the war, either by accepting them into colonies or by liberating the camps. But I can also recognise the pain and hurt the monarchy has caused Africans and other people of colour for generations. I saw that first end growing up in South Africa and going to visit Kenya a lot. No one is obligated to mourn, but I do think there's a nuance in these conversation that's missing and that you can't get from the surface level discussion you get on twitter and that again, no offense, is filled with people who have never lived or been a part of any of this. However, no part what side you fall on, I do think she was devoted to her country and gave her entire life for public service. It was a life of consequence and we'll definitely not see the likes of that again.

Also, mostly hoping for them to finally kick Andrew to the curb.

  18. I think we rehashed the whole Fluke thing just earlier this year in this same thread, but yeah, that was clearly Bill Eckert before Ron got mad people figured it out and then the medical delays from Tony Geary. That was all around the same time they had Luke saying stuff only Bill would have said, as Vee mentioned, and were randomly bringing up the old Eckert house, Jenny, and Julia out of nowhere for probably the first time in a decade.

Luke having DID was horrible and I think a poor story choice, but we won't get into all that. My personal feelings are that they still should have just gone ahead with it being Bill and whatever they had planned in regards to Julia and whoever. Who cares if the audience already had an idea, especially when it was so obvious onscreen.

@carolineg Connie's DID was really one of the worst things I've seen on GH. Bad all around.

I did assume they would be leaving. A part of  me felt a little bad  for Shane   as he returned  to find his roots and  instead he just got nothing (well, Izzy of course), but considering the fate of  crypto millionaires he was probably better off saving his money. Guy Pearce has gotten the rightful praise for his work but I think Peter O'Brien also did a good job, even with those nostalgia moments which  were probably a blur to him.

I didn't notice that about Beverly. I know Neighbours did some unpopular retcons several times (which they even namechecked, surprisingly, when Shane  returned - the whole thing with Jill Ramsay and then with David and Leo), but they seemed to try their best to get details right and add some nice touches for the final week. I liked that they also had a few people mentioned (like Lisa Elliott) Harold had no memory of (neither did I), which is true to life. And I liked that not everyone knew everyone or if they did it could be fleeting, like Elly saying she just remembered Harold from when she was a teenager. It all felt much more respectful to fans and to the show than what you get most of the time.

He did a really terrific job, especially considering how removed he’s been from the show. I don’t think he’s done anything with Neighbours since he left and he fit right back in. I know people like Guy Pearce and Kylie Minogue have done a lot of the reunions over the years but I don’t think he’s done any of those.

I totally agree. It’s remarkable what they pulled off with such a relatively short amount of time. I also think they deserve heaps of credit for getting back a lot of people not just for the finale but for appearances over the past two or three years. Having people like Clive, Jane, Melanie, etc (along with of course Karl, Susan, Paul, and Toadie) be around the past year for the final stretch was a real win for the show as it headed into the finale. It gave them a lot of ways to realisticly bring back in people without it seemingly just like a parade of cameos. I think that really helped the finale have a lot of heart and mean something.

That makes sense about the house.  I had  forgotten he didn't say it to Paul.

I remember there was speculation they would move back  to the Street. I'm kind of glad they didn't go that  route.

Nicola's comments did go international, because she chose  to have a big rant about the show after the finale  and it was on  Daily Mail. I had forgotten she also complained about the show last year during the racism row so she  clearly has an axe to grind. I do wonder how bitter she is that they didn't bother to ask her. I can't say I'm sorry. Izzy served as a more compelling figure for Karl and Susan angst.

You probably already saw this but the actor who played Danny Ramsay was upset as well.

    https://metro.co.uk/2022/07/27/original-neighbours-star-slams-show-in-blistering-rant-17075497/

Yeah, and Paul, Jane, Mike, and Harold seemed shocked to see them and they didn't interact with Melanie or Lucy, so I suppose it was definitely Shane who invited them for whatever reason.

I'm glad they didn't move back either. I think Mike moving back was enough, especially since we don't really know if Izzy and Shane stayed.

I try to avoid the Daily Mail so I missed it was going viral. She's extremely bitter. It's sad to see. I'm glad they went with Izzy too. She's the better character, she works better with the whole street, and irl, she's a much more pleasant person. I've been completely over Sarah the last two times she popped up so I'm glad they didn't go there again. I don't know how they could have even worked her back in in a way that felt natural. Izzy having a daughter with Karl and other ties on the street makes her popping up as a thorn in everyone's side much more organic story wise.

I saw that also. Given him and Craig McLachlan's personal problems, it's obvious why they weren't included. I guess that's not stopping them from ranting in the press though. I do wonder who all asked and the show turned down and who the show tried to get back and couldn't.

Something that I saw pointed out somewhere else- when Izzy is looking through the Ramsay street history book, you could see other letters from past Ramsay Street residents that weren't in the finale. I know someone said that they were  pausing and looking at each page and that one of the letters was from Beverly (Paul's former stepmother) mentioning that she still missed her nephew Todd. Todd's death was one of the big Neighbours events I remember as a kid so I thought that was a nice touch. Loved all the photos they had in there also.
