  1. Guiding Light had been off the air for 6 months when it returned in 1947, this time on CBS. By the end of the NBC run the Kranskys and Rutledge's were gone .

The NBC version was a new story that lead to the introduction of Meta Bauer and then the Bauer family. I guess at some point, Irna decided a core family was necessary. She had used the Schultz family a few years earlier on the second version of Today's Children  and maybe modelled the Bauer's on them.

  2. In the late 60's under Cenedella Susan married Fred Douglas who had been seeing Liz.

Fascinating discussion . The myth of the Gregory family taking over. It was constantly mentioned that Agnes killed them off in a plane crash.

  3. I was being sarcastic when I suggested that Jacquie Courtney would be happy about having an acting coach. Having created a popular and successful character for several years she would probably be insulted to have the idea of a coach presented to her.

There are some performers who just embody their characters regardless of what the perception of their acting ability may or may not be and Jacquie Courtney was one of them. She should never have been dropped.

  4. I'm sure Jacquie would have been thrilled to have an acting coach suggested for her.

Lemay from a theater background, preferred stage actors overall. His first encounter on the set with Jacquie was her referring to her lines hidden all over the set. That first impression stayed with him.

When he arrived Paul Rauch was already planning to drop Margie Impert as Rachel. She had been a Lyle Hill hire and he was not impressed.

  5. Late 71. In a surprise move CBS nabbed Bud Grant from NBC to head up daytime, replacing Paul Rauch.

Changes in effect around that time were the return of Irna Phillips to ATWT, Christopher Bell (Loring Mandel) appointed as LOL headwater and Labine/Mayer becoming headwriters of Where The Heart Is.

    A double dose of Loving!

  9. Paradise Bay was not a Ted Corday production.

Other morning soaps over the years

1950's Hawkins Falls, The Bennetts. Follow Your Heart, Three Steps to Heaven, One Man's family, A Time to Live, Way of the world. All NBC efforts. Gotta give credit for trying.

    1960s

CBS tried Clear Horizon The Brighter Day and then Love of Life settled at 11.30 am

NBC slotted Morningstar and Paradise Bay

Then in the 80's Loving and Texas.

Morning soaps had worked on radio, but I guess the fact that CBS had success in the PM established that was where soaps belonged.

I am suprised that Search for Tomorrow in 1953, only one year after the 1952 debut, had sets that elaborate.

I think you are being kind to call those sets elaborate.

Two walls, some curtains , plants, chairs and the pillars-quite simple but effective for the scene and the times.

Today's producers should be as ingenious.

Not quite sure why the desk in the second set was jammed up against a sofa...

I recall in her book Mary said that in the first year they were able to move away from the black backdrops.

  11. Did Agnes son-in-law also write for the show or am I confused?

Agnes mentored Wisner Washam but after he left AMC I don't think he wrote any other soap. He was pretty much de facto headwriter for many years.'

He clashed with Megan McTavish I believe and quit the show.

I have just read Agnes' book and wish she had have gone into more detail about BTS stuff.

  12. Wasn't Ashley all in a tizz over Diane coming to Jabot and the havoc she would create?

Have we ever seen Diane at Jabot ? Have there been any business decisions that she made at all?

Why does Josh pretty much exclusively write stories around business when he never actually shows anyone at work or dealing with the business beyond  mergers, acquisitions and takeovers that occur in restaurants and peoples homes?

  13. For Gary Tomlin to say he was unfamiliar with Alice was unforgivable.

More likely he was told she was returning and she didn't fit into his vision so he couldn't be bothered taking advantage of her presence.

The thing with Pam Long (and many others) is they make an initial splash with new characters and situations but either through choice or circumstance don't have to follow through over the course of several years to sustain interest in those characters and come up with new plots.
