  1. A rare shot of Vana Tribbey as Alice. From everything I've read, she was good in the role and was inexplicably replaced by Linda Borgeson, who was universally disliked.

    Another_World_Victoria_Wyndham_William_Espy.JPG

The show hinted at Mitch/Alice,which would have been an interesting twist on the Rachel/Alice rivalry.L Virginia Browne did a good job of retooling the show after Tom King and the the 90 min fiasco, but it went down the drain with the Corinne Jacker reign.

    Susan Trustman,the original Pat.

1965_Chicago_Tribune_Tv_Week7777878.JPGanotherworld03m.jpgThis cast shot would be around 74/75

  2. Stacy McQueen of web series 'Pretty' auditioned for the role of Jenny on GH

I auditioned and screen tested for the role of Jenny. It was between me and a gal named Cheryl Richardson. We hit it off in the waiting room and I told her (and I really meant it) "Well, if I don't get this, I'm going to be happy you got it." She did get it and I was truly happy. I got a call a week later from the wonderful Mark Teshner saying they really liked me and would I like to come on as a candystriper? My manager was like ABSOLUTELY NOT. He pointed out that it was only a three day gig and we should hold out for something bigger. But I was new in town and I LOVED that I didn't have to audition for it. That's how I got the role of candystriper Sheila Cantillion. The three days turned into four, then a week, then a few months and then they offered me a two year contract.

Everyone was petrified of late, great Gloria Monty but I really liked her and she really liked me. She always paid extra attention to me and once told me she was grooming me to be the next big thing on the show. Thanks Gloria! But this was during that weird alternate reality time on GH when the wonderful Tony (Luke) Geary came back as some guy named Bill, just a working class Joe.

Because we all know what soap fans want is to watch a world that's JUST LIKE THEIRS. Anyway, there was very little glamor and it was all about working and not getting paid. All the ones that had been there forever were really wonderful to work with. Except one.

Let's call her "Ms. Soap Diva". She was mean on and off camera. I was so young and still in that place where I wanted everyone to LIKE ME! (Now I don't give a flip) I liked being on the show the most when I got to be funny.

When the scene was over, the whole crew applauded, and the producer stopped by later and told that head honchos in New York had called and were really impressed. Everyone talked about how this story line was going to MAKE MY CHARACTER ON THE SHOW. I had a story line for awhile that Bill's cousin and I were always trying to find a place to make out but no matter where we'd end up, we'd always get caught. One time we even ended up in an underground tunnel. (Artie Johnson discovered us!!!) THEN Gloria Monty got fired. Everyone I worked with were getting fired left and right. My story line was growing (Elizabeth Berkley auditioned for my sister!) and we were at a part where I had an abusive father that came back to Port Charles and I got to do this kick ass crying scene.

I WAS ON TOP OF THE WORLD! And then... it was completely and utterly dropped. The new producer took hold of the show had different ideas. So there never was any mention of it again. My boyfriend, father and sister were fired, and I would go to work, hand Dr. Quartermaine a clip board and go home. I joked about being the highest paid extra in television.

I think the diva she is referring to is Jane Eliot.

  3. Rose did have a romance with Eileen's uncle Paul, played by Stephen Joyce. He had a nagging wife Rita. This was during the 90 min eps.

Yes,I remember when Texas was first mentioned,it was said that Russ would be a part along with Pat,who would be involved with Kevin(Lee Paterson)

I recall a Daytime Tv review of the 90 min shows and it recounted how we would see for example,Rachel visit Iris, then Mac ,then Ada etc and have long winded conversations-it was very 'draggy'

Looking back there were so many miscast roles over that time period -Laurence Lau was wrong for Jamie,Sally Spencer as MJ,Taylor Miller.Sharon Gabet,Laurie Landry ,Rhonda Lewin,Philece Sampler etc etc

  4. Blaine was given a lot of story in the Laura Malone years.3 marriages in 5 years wore out the character and she and Sandy were 'true love' characters so there was little for her to do once they married. Her dismissal was the nail in the coffin for that character.

I think Malone went into some sort of legal profession. She was featured in a SOW Where Are They Now? story.

  5. I agree that killing off Quinn was a mistake as she was one of the few characters with any longevity. She hadn't even been married once in her 6 or so years on the show so there was plenty of story potential.I was fine with Clarice and Larry going as they were played out.

However, the show was overloaded with females in that age bracket-Rachel,Felicia,Donna,Maisie and Mary

.The show was very damaged from all the changes since Lemay left.In principle, refashioning the show around the Cory,Love and McKinnons was a good move but the execution was poor.At the time Whitesell/DePriest said the show needed a proper revamp but their ideas were poorly executed and after a few months it was back to dropping characters and bringing in newbies.

I would have tied Maisie into the McKinnons by having her involved with Vince and Vince and Maisie become the new core working class couple after Vince and Mary realized their time had passed Maisie could have some secrets in her past..MJ as the strong police officer daughter and Ben as the hot younger son.Explore his history with Marley and attraction to Vicky for a Ben/Marley/Jake/Vicky quadrangle with lots of twists and turns.

Have Nancy get involved with Scott and eliminate Cheryl. No Adam Cory as that branch of the family never rang true to me.

Jamie back (not as adoctor, but working at Cory) and you have Jamie/MJ/Nicole as a ready made triangle as Jamie had previous involvements with both at different times. The MJ prostitution story was way better suited to Nicole considering her past as cocaine addict.Have her ex lover/pimp/whatever return and intimidate her.Maybe he makes a play for Vicky to taunt Nicole who is unable to say much for fear her past will be exposed and she'll lose Jamie.MJ gets involved with her new partner, who is in a troubled marriage.

Oh,and bring back the Matthews with Mike Randolph,a daughter for Russ.Have LIz,Russ,Pat etc as recurring players.

Iris and Dennis should have come back earlier. Maybe Iris and Reg?

  6. Thanks for that.it's good to see the whole story in one spot.Tina was Toni Bull Bua. I liked the idea of Sandy being brought back in.Too often soaps neglected viable characters from the past. However,Sandy's story seemed to fizzle out after this.Didn't she marry Kevin? Jimmy never came back.He could have boosted the younger set.I wonder if the show had Ellen and Sandy interact much as Ellen had been aged so much.

  7. Courtesy of French Fan,here's how some of 74 was summarized

Mrs. West asked Bob if she could return to him since John has foisted her on to Rick. John accused Bob of trying to challenge his position as head of medical services. Jennifer was upset when Rick defaulted on a loan Bob cosigned for him. John maligned Bob and Rick to Kim and told her it was none of her business. However, he continued to force Kim to socialize and was very upset when she walked out on a dinner with a couple whose views on basic values disgusted her. She later said their marriage was a mistake and should be ended. John answered he knew who the father of the child she miscarried was. John made it clear Jen would learn if she divorced.

A very suspicious delivery man was found near the bookstore and when Lisa described the man to Jay, he realized he was his stepfather, Gil Stallings. Nobody believed that Gil is the one who tried to kill Lisa twice. A night, Gil locked Lisa in a closet and told Jay he married her mother for the money but the money was left to Jay. He would kill Lisa and made it look as though Jay killed her and then killed himsel. Grant learned form Salt Lake City police Gil inherited Jay’s legacy and realized Jay and Lisa were in danger. He surprised Gil who had shot Jay. Jay was hospitalized and Gil was killed escaping.

Ellen and David discussed Dan staying in England because of Susan’s threats to take their daughter Emily from him. Ironically, a mutual research project between hospital meants David might be working closely with Susan.

Kim begged John to let her go and insisted a marriage relationship with him would disgust her. John found Kim packed and ready to move but dialed Jen’s number and Kim realized he would go through with her threat. She backed down then saw a minister Rev. Booth explaining about the one night stand with Bob before her marriage. He said he would talk to John but John was furious. When a Mrs. Wilson called Rick at 1 a.m. he told her it was indigestion but at 3 a.m. John was called: it was a coronary. Mrs. Wilson’s sister, Marsha Davidson was an important social contact for John who took care of Mrs. Wilson. Kim was distgusted that John was concerned for Mrs. Wilson because of her sister’s patronage.

Jay was cleared of all involvment in the murder attempts on Lisa and he tried to buy into the construction company. He was turned flat and bought up yhe own,er Mr. Herschel’s big note. Grant admitted he wanted a future with Lisa and went to San Francisco to free himself from his ex-wife. Then he asked Lisa if she had ever considered Jay might be in love with her. She laughed but Jay said to himself he would win her. Tom felt he was penalized for working in Grant Coleman’s department at the family law firm. Carol was afraid that Tom would quit and felt part of Tom’s discontent was the fact she was unable to have a child. Lisa tried to convince Grant into giving Tom a raise but he refused.

Susan was working with David on an antibody resarch project and tried to impress her ex-father-in-law. Mark was becoming annoyed at the way she was hiding their relationship but she explained she could not give Dan any ammunition to open the custody case.

Susan tried to cut down Dan’s visits to Emily claiming she did not adjust well. She made sure Dan met Mark but Mark sensed she tried to make Dan feel badly with Emily. John implied Susan wanted Dan back she she denied it.

Tom was involved with his first case: defending Natalie Bannon and Carol felt excluded. One night Tom got away early and was furious to find Carol at the Book Shop. After another dizzy spell, Jennifer realized she had an incurable condition. Bob realized Jennifer knew and he encouraged her to live each day to its fullest. Kim returned from vacation and Jen apologized for forcing Kim to go away with John.

Grant decided to file for divorce so he and Lisa would not wait. Joyce arrived in Oakdale claiming she wanted Grant back. She asked Lisa if she and Grant were lovers but Lisa did not answer. A night, Grant found Joyce very ill and rushed her to the hospital where appendictis was diagnosed. Lisa understood he wanted to be near Joyce. Dan performed the surgery and while Joyce survived, peritonitis infection was severe. For Joyce’s recovery, Grant said he still had feelings for her. Jay presented Lisa with an expensive pin and hoped she had feelings for him. She felt upset and told him he should move from the Book Shop apartment. Carol began to realize Lisa was the girl Jay was in love with.

  8. April 15th 1977 Producer Doctoring The Doctors by Jon Michael Reed.

Jeff Young, producer of "The Doctors" has been doctoring his show with a slew of new characters and storylines over the past year.

To mark the serial's 14th anniversary,April 1st, he introduced a "peppier, livelier" jazzed-up version of it's theme music during a special one hour edition a few days earlier. The NBC graphics department also executed a new opening, featuring a romanticized montage of the shows major performers a la the innovative titles of "The Young and the Restless".

Changes continue this week with the debut of John Shearin in the returning role of Mike Powers, previously played by Armand Assante. Shearin, who'll commute to the NY studios of "The Doctors" from Baltimore, where he lives with his wife, recently understudied two roles in Broadway's The Comedians. So he's not a novice in taking over someone else's role.

Another "Doctors" inheritor is Katherine Eckles, who replaces Fanny Speiss in the role of Wendy Conrad, a role that has been "matured" in order to provide a story of a mother daughter contest over the affections of a young buck.

The other major casting switch is the casting of Gordon Rigsby in the role of Dr McClintock. Gordon was a director at OLTL for many years as well as several recent episodes of "The Doctors". McClintock will handle Carolee's professional care after the exit of her physician Dr Brandt. Actor Gil Rogers, in the latter role, departed to play executed convict Gary Gilmore in an upcoming PBS special.

I never knew Rigsby and Rogers were on the show. There must be so many other recurring roles played by known actors that are unreported. I don't think the Wendy/Eleanor rivalry came to pass. Were they slated to fight over Luke?

  9. The whole Love/McKinnon story was a bust from the outset. The premise of Mary back from the dead and an amnesiac and married to Reg was a stretch .The we had Vince having to be recast to fit the story, the creation of Cheryl, complete ignorance of the viable character of Ben.It was almost like DePriest came up with the story and twisted things around to fit it.

Then you had Jamie recast and now a doctor, bad recasts for Nicole and Vicky.

I remember reading in SOD that by the end of 86 they had only 6 characters left from the start of the year.

I think Eplin and Wheeler asked to be released from their contracts.Did Stuart,Schnetzer and Osburn all leave when their contracts were up?

  10. That rundown of the 73/74 story was terrific. Thanks so much for taking the time to detail that storyline. Your passion really came through.

I was interested in your comments regarding Rick/Con Roche.when reading your summary I felt that there was a lot of mileage to be had from that character.John and Rick could have had an uneasy alliance that would have gone on for years, each trying to one up the other but also bound together by their dislike of Bob and the Hughes.Imagine if Rick had gone after Carol or got involved with Lisa in some way...

Keeping Rick on the canvas and bringing back Barbara much sooner (maybe when the show went to 60 min) would have kept the core tighter in my opinion.

Not having seen the show at the time it seemed the show faltered a little when this story wound down. Kim was put into the John/Dan story which kept things humming for a few more years, but Bob really had nothing strong after that in terms of romance. Then when Kim and Dan finally married, that was the end of that saga.

Of course all shows have that issue when the tortured couple finally get together eg Days with Bill/Laura and Doug/Julie and it takes masterful writing to have another equally compelling plot ready to take over.

Re the later Sabrina plot,i agree with the posts previously that stated that Sabrina should have been a more interesting character who perhaps had had an unfortunate upbringing and caused a lot of trouble.Overall Sabrina had little impact on the show.

Saynotoursoap, hope you can continue to detail 74 and the shows expansion in 75 and your feelings about the storylines of that time.

  11. Jet magazine reported in Oct 82 that actor Ben Harney ,Tony award winner for Dreamgirls would be playing Dr Gregory Stone and be involved with Nurse Hollis Rogers played by Donna Drake.

Did Ben/Gregory ever make it to air or was the show cancelled before he taped any shows?

It was a P&G show and Thomas Riley was producer.

Juliet was a native of Capstan Island,Maine ,who left for NYC to become a singer. Foster father Charles and boyfriend John wanted her to return home but she found love with Tom in NY. Tom was charged for a crime and Juliet and her father faced charges as accomplices. John romanced and married Anne and his mother Ruth threw them a wedding bash at her house Grey Gables.

In 55,Tom had been sentenced and Juliet vowed to clear his name with the help of Carl. They found the real criminal,Fred. Tom when released behaved badly towards poor Juliet, accepting a job that took him away, Charles became ill and Juliet had to care for him in NY. Then Carl and Otto kidnapped Juliet. Her new beau Paul saved her in the nick of time.

Golden Windows was one of 3 NBC soaps to debut on the same day in the hopes of establishing an afternoon soap block.,the others being First Love and Concerning Miss Marlowe.

    From Wikipedia

The program told the story of Juliet Goodwin (played by Leila Martin), a 22-year-old girl who spent an isolated childhood in an island retreat off the coast of Maine with her foster father, Charles Goodwin (played by Eric Dressler), and her attempt to find happiness with Tom Anderson (played by Herb Patterson), the bitter young cynic with whom she was in love, although she is was engaged to another. Julie, a girl endowed with a lovely body and a glorious voice, found that her curiosity about life and people had made her vaguely discontented with life on the idyllic island Capstan.

As the story opened, Julie discussed plans for her forthcoming marriage to her fiancé, John Brandon (played by Grant Sullivan), when a bad storm blew up and he returned to the hotel he and his mother ran on the mainland.

The following sequence of events took place in the program’s opening week:

Tuesday, July 6: Tom Anderson, battered by the New England storm and fleeing the police on what may be a murder charge, found his way to the Goodwin house.

Wednesday, July 7: Julie convinced her father that Tom was ill and needed their help so they put him up in the guest room for the night after he had collapsed from fatigue.

Thursday, July 8: On the mainland, John told his mother (played by Harriet MacGibbon) that he promised to get Julie an audition with a famous musician who was staying at their resort hotel. Meanwhile, Tom regained consciousness.

Friday, July 9: There was an awareness about Tom and Julie of the growing bond between them and she promised to hide him from the police until he was stronger and could go to them with the story of his how partner was shot, and convince them he was not guilty.

The program was produced by Mary Harris, and directed by Dan Levin. The story was by John M. Young and Corlis Wilber.
