  2. April 1962 Will the Real Capice Please Stand? For some time before plot developments proved their observation to be correct a number of viewers wrote to "The Edge of Night" daytime dramatic serial on CBS to ask "Aren't the characters of Jack Lambert a n d Phil Capice played by the same actor?" Not only were both roles performed by the same actor— Ray MacDonnell—but this also gave rise to one of the neatest technical illusions ever to be used on dramatic television: the same man standing appeared in a single scene facing himself seated in a chair Obviously this couldn't have been done with mirrors. The trick was accomplished by VideoScene a special high quality "matting" process developed by CBS engineers Here's the background: On "The Edge of Night" MacDonnell made up to appear as an unsavory-looking plug-ugly character named Jack Lambert underwent plastic surgery with the result that he looked exactly like Phil Capice who later was kidnapped by two connivers. In a recent scene on the show the real Phil Capice and the pseudo Phil Capice met face-to-face This was accomplished by video-taping an entire scene in which the real Phil Capice was involved in a discussion with four members of the cast including his kidnappers-to-be In the same stage setting an empty area had intentionally been held in reserve partment went to work with the Video Scene process Phil Capice No 2 was seated in a chair in the formerly unoccupied stage area. The original videotape was played back and he was Inserted into it via electronic magic as the television cameras did a second "take" Thus Phil Capice No 1 met Phil Capice No 2 July 1963 AS WE pick up our story on July 1, Mike has just successfully proved that the young college student Beth Moon was not guilty of committing a local robbery and has brought out the real guilty party and it would seem that things will be quiet in Monticello at least for the time being. But Louise Capice has recently become a target of blackmail, having been approached by the natural mother of her foster daughter, Louise, who can have no children of her own, is desperately trying to keep Sara Louise, at the same time keeplng the knowledge of any threat to their family security and happiness from her husband Phil.
  3. Y&R stayed #1 for years telling traditional soap stories with a few 'modern'nods to action/adventure/mystery plots but other soaps seemed more willing to copy each other with serial killers/clones/aliens/spies etc to chase ratings
  4. I agree with that sentiment re John's early days on the show. With Deborah Adair there was definitely chemistry and the way Deborah played Jill you could understand the mutual attraction. Once Brenda went into full diva mode, John started to look like a fool for ever marrying her. Would posters still want Jerry on the show now? Would he still be capable at his age (88)? If not, the decision to cut Jerry from the show might have had to be made at some point. Have John move out of town or kill him off?

  9. Was Lyman interested in returning to AMC at that point? I would imagine with Mama's Family ending she would have been hoping to parlay that into some more primetime work rather than heading back to NY and AMC. She did agree to Generations but it was in LA, short term and came with some contract perks I recall eg the chance to direct, which she wanted to pursue.

  12. April 1969 He Thrives On Suspense Irving Vendig can be considered to be the exception to the rule you can't have your cake and eat it, too. For Vendig has continued to enjoy success and a substantial income as , a writer, first in radio and now TV, while living in Sarasota, although it is estimated about 99 per cent of all regularly scheduled network TV programming originates from either New York or Hollywood locales. Yet Vendig, who has lived in Sarasota since 1938, refuses to leave his Florida home for the supposedly affluent addresses of the writing fraternity on both coasts. "I like it here in Sarasota," he says. "The air is clear and the society is different." Vendig is creator and head writer of NBC-TV's new suspense series, "Hidden Faces," which is colorcast Mondays through Fridays. Though the serial originates from NBC's studios in New York, where the actors and production staff are based, Vendig writes the scripts in Florida. In today's world, the 1,100 miles that separate him from New York City present no handicap. "I am no further away than the telephone," he says. "But in a crisis or for major casting I will fly to New York, and it is easier and more relaxing to get to New York from Sarasota, than to travel to the city from Westport, Connecticut. I know because I used to live in Westport." While working on a serial such as "Hidden Faces," Vendig, who also created "Edge of Night," the first half-hour dramatic TV series in 1956, sits at his typewriter seven days a week. His day begins at 8:30 a.m. Born in Holly Springs, Miss., Vendig moved to Chicago at the age of two. "I took my parents with me," he chuckles. While working as a researcher for a Chicago advertising agency on the Little Orphan Annie" radio show, he decided he could write dramatic dialogue. In 1935, he began writing his first radio serial, "Judy and Jane," with which he was associated for 25 years. As his career was beginning to prosper, daughter Laurie Ann was experiencing respiratory ailments. "When Laurie Ann was five, she had pneumonia twice during the same winter," he recalls. "Our physician informed us that she could not take another severe winter. We had to move to Florida. A friend suggested Sarasota, and we've never regretted the change." Despite the change in location, there has been no change in career except for the better. He created and wrote the "Houseboat Hannah" and "David Adams" radio shows. He was associated with Erie Stanley Gardner in his "Perry Mason" radio series for 14 years, but left when the show moved to Hollywood. "I would not leave Sarasota," he says, "even though I could have been involved with 'Perry Mason,' television shows and feature movies." In 1951, Vendig assumed the writing responsibilities of TV's "Search for Tomorrow," then in its eighth week. During the more. than five years that he wrote the series, it climbed to the number one rating for daytime serials. He left it six months after he created and began writing "Edge of Night," which went on to become TV's top rated daytime show. Now he is striving to catapult his "Hidden Faces" into the lead in the rating race. After completing each script, he Xeroxes a copy and sends it air mail, special delivery to Charles Fisher, producer of "Hidden Faces," in New York. Fisher reads it and then discusses it with Vendig via telephone ("our phone bill is enormous") before turning it over to the serial's two production assistants for cast calls and set breakdowns.
