Y&R April 2021 Discussion Thread
You’re free to dislike Michelle Stafford. I like her. And BTW, the character of Nina on GH didn’t work until recently. Cynthia Watros didn’t do well with awful writing, either. Then you must agree that most or at least many legacy characters are psychopaths if we look at what their character has done. Victor? Chelsea? Nikki? Adam? Kevin? Gloria? Michael? Should I go on? I don’t want to argue with you, especially because I usually love your soap insights. But I’m bothered when boards turn on an ACTOR and throw insults around about the character as a sideline. But hey, that’s me. I realize people can post what they want — just as I can disagree. The writing hasn’t been particularly good for ANY character on the show, not just Phyllis. I can make the case that every single character on the canvas is PLAYED OUT by those standards. At least you admit it’s the actress — Michelle Stafford — who bothers you so much. You’re not the only one, but just saying “the actress who plays Phyllis” doesn’t blunt the negativity towards Stafford.

Looks like the I Hate Phyllis crew is here. WTH do you want the character to do? Be sad and depressed that she won a battle with Sally? GMAB. That hardly makes her a psychopath.

GH April 2021 Discussion
I think the writing for Cyrus is bad, but I also blame Jeff Kober. Because he was scary and creepy on other roles doesn’t mean he’s a failure on GH only because of the writing. Was he successful on those other shows only due to the writing? No. So the truth is the writing onGH is lousy and so is he. He’s not just a meh villain, he’s terrible. And Michael E Knight can leave tomorrow. His Southern charm is wretched to watch. These two are Laura’s siblings? My God.

Your handle is David Vickers but you don’t get my gay comment about Theo? Uh....ok. Regardless, it’s not wishful thinking. Theo is good looking, but I’m not attracted to him at all.

i don’t see Theo as ruined, but I do see him as sacrificed. If and when Ciara returns, she and Theo won’t be endgame. He’s being used here — and badly, since I don’t find their instalove believable anyway.

Yeah, he is, but couldn’t they have cast a better device or written one? It’s not believable that she’d leave town with Theo this quickly. And again, pairing Ben with this Claire person is laughable. She’s not Claire and she’s so vanilla it’s pathetic.

So Ashland is shutting down all these Jabot plants, and big bad Jabot has a plan: put Jack and Kyle in the boardroom with one laptop and fixes will happen. Who writes this shi_t? I love a good business story, but make it realistic. It’s stupid to believe Ashland could shut down plants all over the world anyway.

I don’t feel any heat between Theo and Ciara. She needs a strong leading man type, and that’s not Theo. He belongs with a softer, less dominant female, or frankly, with another guy. It’s no stretch to see Theo as gay. And Ben moving from Ciara to Claire? Huh? Hard pass on that. She comes off as his 2nd cousin who he sees at the family reunion every July.

I think they ran the same episode all week.

GH April 2021 Discussion
Maxie spends more time in cemeteries talking to tombstones than any soap character in history. Gag me.

i think you’re exactly right, but at the same time, it still makes me dislike Ciara to the point that I don’t care if she leaves the show. I know Ben is a killer, but I’ve just put that in a box and shoved it out of the way. Is that because I like the way RSW looks too much? Probably. I’m just being honest about being shallow. But pairing Ben with Claire is a BAD idea. I see NOTHING there. No heat, no chemistry, nothing.

GH April 2021 Discussion
i don’t see a bright side here. Lipton’s acting choices are bad, and he’s really regressed as a performer. I don’t know what the hell he’s doing, honestly.

GH April 2021 Discussion
I don’t think directors on any of these soaps are giving notes to ANYONE. It’s all about getting one scene after the other taped as quickly as possible. Wes Ramsey could literally hiss for 20 seconds and the director would yell “That’s a wrap.”

Why was Lauren’s dressing down of Sally and Summer done at Society — in a damn restaurant? Yes, we all know why, but it doesn’t make it any less ridiculous.

GH April 2021 Discussion
i have to disagree. I think NLG is a daytime superstar who excels whether the writing is good or bad and who has been great on every show she’s appeared on. Supporting? No. I think she’s a lead. I also think she’s earned this special episode.

GH April 2021 Discussion
William Lipton needs a director. Period. He has talent and he’s done good work — and I think that’s been delivered to him too many times. Now he’s either trying too hard to be an ACTOR or thinks more (that walk, those scrunched up faces) is always better. The past couple weeks have been a “WTF is that???” for me, and the producers at GH are doing that kid no favors.

ALL: Soap Opera Background Music Thread
I don't know if the rumors or true, but regardless, I don't think the music has anything to do with those rumors. I don't believe JFP is making changes because she knows Ed Scott and Kay Alden are returning.

ALL: Soap Opera Background Music Thread
There's no question; Y&R has definitely been using pre-JFP music. In addition, some of the recently-written music sounds more like the Y&R stuff we liked from the past. Yes, for a time, the old Y&R music cues completely disappeared, and the new music was awful. But that's changed, and I wish people would stop parroting what they said a year ago. The music has improved dramatically from what we heard a year back.

ALL: Soap Opera Background Music Thread
I'm not buying that article. It was written by someone who obviously has an ax to grind, and it all comes across as ridiculous. I'm no defender of JFP, but hyperbole and drama like that doesn't help anything....it's impossible to know what the truth is. Josh Griffith is having meltdowns? WTF? Any confirmation of this? Does anyone know what it even MEANS? I actually think the music has improved in the past couple months. The modern stuff isn't getting in the way and is used sparingly, and the old, classic cues are being used to good effect.

Bright Promise
Anyone remember "Bright Promise"? It aired on NBC at 3:30 pm from Sept. 1969-March 1972, and centered on young people in a university town. I was in high school at the time, and remember falling for Susan Brown, who played BP's heroine Martha Ferguson -- whose college professor husband cheated on her with a student. I write to Susan numerous times during the show's run, as well as afterwards when she joined GH and PC, and she responded every time with nice notes, BP scripts, and more... what a classy lady. "Bright Promise" was a terrific soap, I thought, ahead of its time -- no doubt aided by Gloria Monty's leadership. A young Tony Geary was in the cast, and I remember his making an indelible impression as a young man of seemingly "limited capacity" taken in by Martha (Susan Brown) who turned out to be a creative, artistic type. Geary sang on the show, strumming a guitar, and I can still hear one of those songs in my head, "Hello, Rainbow," that played in one of the show's last episodes.
