ALL: General Retro Soap Discussion
Interesting. I'd love to know those exact details. I do remember Vicki's first trial for murder with Karen's famous scene. AW's Pat Randolph was well known for her two murder trials. But many AW fans have forgotten that Pat was also a suspect in the murder of Bernice Robinson around 1971-72. Pat was not tried for the murder, because Mark Venable confessed to killing Bernice on Pat's patio after a sexual affair with Bernice had ended badly. Thankfully poor Pat did not stand trial for murder THREE times. LOL. Now, that would have been one for the record books!! LOL.

Thanks for the response. Was Dorian actually on trial for both murders, or just accused?

Where did Michelle find Jen Jacobs? Has JJ previously been on a soap opera? I don't recall seeing this actress in anything before BTG. In my opinion, JJ needs an acting coach pronto. And whoever is writing Ashley's plot and dialogue needs a writing coach -- also, pronto.

The Soap Opera Masterpieces You Have Actually Seen
Bill Bell wrote super couples on DOOL. He wrote Bill/Laura and Julie/Doug. They were the first two super couples on DOOL. Just because they didn't go on silly capers and cloak and dagger espionage, doesn't mean they were not super couples.

BTG: September 2025 Discussion Thread
After today's scenes with the Duprees, Ted, and Bill, I've come to believe the Dupree family desperately needs at least one character to be the the family's moral compass. That role could easily be filled by Anita. The writers would just need to soften her slightly -- giving her a bit of empathy for outsiders. Similar to Miss Ellie Ewing on Dallas. Miss Ellie was living in a house full of vipers, while she loved and supported each of them -- sometimes to a fault. But still -- when things got out of hand, the viewers could see in her eyes, that Miss Ellie was not happy with what was happening. She seldom had to say a word, but we could see it subtlety in the acting skills of Barbara Bel Geddes. Our Miss Tunie could certainly play that type of subtext. I'm not suggesting Anita should become a clone of Ellie Ewing, but simply suggesting the family needs someone who is capable of seeing a side the rest of the family refuses to see -- whoever that might be. And Anita might be a good choice.

Agreed. Finally Keith is playing Ted as a strong character. And I love it. But please do not make him have sex with Leslie. Jesus Lord... I do not want to see that!!

Oh, I agree it's not simple. And it was played with complexity, as it should have been. But Smitty still used Martin. No way to deny that. I only wish Martin would have said, "I give up," walked out the door, and slammed it behind him. Leaving Smitty to stew in his own juices. The entire thing is as complex as Hell. But Smitty is certainly no longer the poor put-upon victim in this relationship.

Me too! I'm so glad I paid mine. Martin even slipping a little tongue. Now, that's a kiss!

BTG: September 2025 Discussion Thread
Well, if that happens that will leave only two Dupree marriages in tact -- Anita/Vernon and Naomi/Jacob. And there are rumblings that Naomi/Jacob are headed for trouble soon. Frankly, I'm a little tired of watching Dupree marriages explode before our eyes. I love BTG, but that trope is becoming tired and redundant.

Yeah, it was rather weird. Smitty is supposed to be a good guy, yet he had sex with a man he knows is in love with him, then kicked Martin to the curb. So he used Martin for sex. That does not demonstrate the actions of a good guy. The lead-up scene was so great -- a nice kiss without the camera cutting away, then discretely going upstairs, and a short love-scene. So finally, we see Smitty and Martin being tender and intimate with one another. Then five minutes later, Smitty is having post-sex regrets and sends Martin back to the couch. Strange writing in my opinion.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Not to the degree of Luke/Laura, of course. But I'd suggest Mike/Leslie were a super-couple of the 1970s -- not unlike Bill/Laura or Doug/Julie on DOOL, or Alice/Steve on AW. 1970s super-couples were more grounded than those of the 1980s-90s, and had fewer bells and whistles. But they were super-couples to be sure.

Is is your job to protect everyone from spoilers? Frankly, I'd prefer that kind of thing be done by one of the site administrators/owners. Having posters admonish one another for breaking rules the average poster doesn't even know about is rather offensive. It reeks of brown-nosing. Just my opinion, of course. So carry on.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Creating a show is different from creating characters. So some show creators (and their estates) might receive royalties, depending on their original agreements/contracts. I don't believe soap opera creators are covered by the writers' guild rules, so creators are free to negotiate any kind of agreement then can get. If the story about Sam Hall is true, that would have been an extremely unusual contract, and well beyond the expectations of the writers' guild. Perhaps ABC offered him that as sort of a "signing bonus" to get him to take the head-writing job, but not for creating particular characters. I have read comments from many former soap opera writers who claim the legend that writers receive on-going royalties for characters they create is absolutely false. So I believe them.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Oh, that would have been wonderful. And how strange it was for Bob and Kim not to have a home set for the final nine-years of the show. I remember when TPTB reluctantly brought back Scott DeFretis during the Andy/Denise storyline (wasn't this around 2001?) -- the entire plot took place in the Hughes kitchen, because the living room/foyer set had been struck almost a year earlier. Aside from the original Mona Lisa set and the Yacht Club pool set, the Hughes living room/foyer was probably the biggest set in the studio. Even bigger than Lucinda's house, which was supposedly a mansion. And the Hughes set had become so iconic, there was really no acceptable way to "shrink" it when the budget got tight -- because the viewers would have noticed immediately and would have rebelled. So TPTB just scrapped it, and moved most of the Hughes "important moments" to Tom and Margo's house, or to Memorial Hospital. Unfortunate, because it minimized Bob and Kim, and we then saw them mostly at work.

BTG: August 2025 Discussion Thread
Somebody should tell Leslie, the first thing she should have done was hire an attorney and a financial manager. The idea that this "recently rich" woman is entering this world with no advice from anyone makes her look stupider than she is supposed to be. Also, I think Anita should have fought a little harder to have the trust revoked. It seemed she had only one very short conversation about that with Ted, then she gave up. There should have been a least a brief legal battle, which Leslie would have likely won. And was there no resolution on Leslie's suspected attempted murder case? Did they just drop the whole thing? I think it should have gone to court, and then the judge would see all the messy tampering Kat did with the evidence, causing the case to be dismissed. The entire thing could have been wrapped-up with one or two scenes with a judge in his chambers (no need for a courtroom set). But to just drop it is lazy writing in my opinion.

Wow. Filler. Really?? You don't have much confidence in the writers, do you? Are you suggesting they would produce 50 episodes of filler in one year? In the words of my former employer, Mrs Chancellor, "Dear God in Heaven..."

I understand that. But if it makes the viewers bored or hurts the ratings, it is still not a good decision. Especially if CBS plans to do this for a week every time we have a national holiday.
-
BTG: August 2025 Discussion Thread
Sorry to be negative, but I don't think this bodes well for the future of BTG. It gives the impression that CBS is disappointed in the show, and the network doesn't even care if these repeated "rerun weeks" erode the ratings. Anyone with a brain knows that new soap operas always take a long time to build strong and consistent ratings. And if CBS wasn't willing to give BTG at least three or four years of support, the network should never have green-lighted the show.

BTG: August 2025 Discussion Thread
With respect -- if someone posts something that someone else has already posted, there is really no need to point that out. It's not a contest. Nobody cares who posted it first. We just want to read about it. Again, it's not a contest. We are not in competition with one another to see who shares the news first. Of course, that's just my opinion.

BTG: August 2025 Discussion Thread
This is vey strange. And I can't imagine it will help the ratings in any way. Are they going to do this at every holiday for an entire week? And at Chistmas/New Years will we get two straight weeks of reruns? When will the Dupees be celebrating Christmas -- the middle of January??? Somebody at CBS doesn't understand the first thing about soap operas or the soap opera audience.

BTG: August 2025 Discussion Thread
The new Ted is a good actor, but he doesn't have the same gravitas Maurice brought to the role. Maurice was believable as the rich, successful, well-known, self-confident plastic surgeon. When the recast occurred, they started writing Ted like a loser. I don't blame the actor. He's probably capable of playing some level or gravitas. But the writing is failing him, and possibly the directing also. Someone should tell the actor to play Ted stronger and with more self confidence -- isn't that the director's job??

Another World Discussion Thread
Was Helen Moore ever an important character on AW? I'd like to hear fans' perspectives on this character. I've already looked her up on the AWHP, so I have read everything there. No need to rehash any of that. I vaguely remember Helen from watching AW in the mid-1970s. At that point, Helen seemed little more than Lenore's mother. But I understand, when first introduced by Agnes Nixon, Helen Moore was an uber-wealthy socialite. Even more wealthy than Liz Matthews. And possibly as wealthy as the (later introduced) Corys. And if my memory is correct, when Lenore left Bay City in 1975, Helen stayed around for a year or so. So that suggests that she had some historical signifigance to the show, even without her daughter in town. Just wondering what others might remember about Helen Moore.
