  1. of course they’re going to go there. it’s an oldie but goodie. i remember craig montgomery faking so he could stay married to betsy — back when meg ryan was playing betsy. what i was really hoping was that they’d ship him off to rehab and ashley would go with him. oh well.
  2. polly holiday of ‘alice,’ and according to the ny times obit, six episodes of ‘search for tomorrow’ in 1974. free link. polly holiday obit
  3. perhaps a more interesting take. what would irna think about beyond the gates
  4. ignore my previous post. what i wanted to say was also earned, though more light-hearted, was the fight between nola and vanessa on gl when both showed up to nola’s engagement part wearing the same dress.
  5. more from irna on btg irna’s thoughts after six months
  6. along with the cat fights that began with crystal and alexis on dynasty and have become synonymous with daytime soaps.
  7. that was the LEAST of my issues with the final episode and the two years that preceded it! so true about doug, aggie, and claire.
  8. two from ‘world turns, both written by doug marland: bob and susan’s affair the frannie/ sabrina reveal
  9. i so connect jfp with bringing justin deas as buzz, i forget the coopers were created by and earlier regime. many, if not most head writers, brought on new characters and maybe didn’t axe previous characters, but rearranged storylines to make room for the newcomers — thinking douglas marland and the synders. but, the abc/sam hall is an outlier. i don’t know of any head writer who ever received royalties.
  10. I suspect because Sam Hall created the Buchanan family - who dominated the show until the end. perhaps. i just can’t recall any head writer getting the same deal. i mean is jill farren phelps getting royalties because she created the coopers on gl? i expect there’s more to the sam hall/abc deal.
  11. the former head writer of One Life To Live, Sam Hall, sued ABC for stopping royalty checks when OLTL moved over to Prospect Park According to the complaint, ABC made a deal in 1984 with Wildercliff, Ltd. for Hall’s writing services. The agreement is said to have entitled Hall to a weekly royalty “as long as the One Life to Live series is broadcast.” A copy of the agreement was included as an exhibit in the lawsuit. The royalty payment was $1,000 per week, and it’s not spelled out whether “broadcast” is restricted to network television. Hall says he got those weekly royalties until Jan. 13, 2012, when the series ended on ABC. “Each week during which such exhibitions by each authorized entity occurred Hall was entitled to be paid the weekly royalties,” says the complaint. “Despite due demand, Hall has not been paid any of the weekly royalties to which he is entitled for the exhibition of the series by Prospect Park Productions, iTunes, Hulu and OWN, which total in excess of $50,000.” https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/one-life-live-writer-sues-669645/ I was responding to the original question regarding head writers wanting to introduce new characters “because they would be paid future royalties for their own creations. I don't know if it that's true or not but that would explain a lot.“ a couple of HWs told me that was not the case. it’s been a couple of years since i last spoke with him, but tom phillips, irna’s son, told me was still receiving royalties because she co-created days… as for sam hall, why abc would have agreed to such an arrangement.
  12. would loved to have seem them go there. of course, jack’s wife — mary ryan — had been dead for a while.
  13. guessing you’re talking about christopher and the final year of ‘world turns.
  14. which is exactly why it was a brilliant decision on the part of mvj — opens up a lot of story. of course, back in the day, it would have been months of story. now i’m hoping for a least a couple of weeks. thought i do wish that rather than leslie confronting nicole in the same episode, the audience could have had a bit of a chance to anticipate the reveal.
  15. i’ve always suspected the former. particularly since the initial attempt was the first week, when we knew virtually nothing about the character or her motivation.
  16. not familiar with the 90-day consecutive rerun issue. i thought the late february start allowed them to take full advantage of Black history month.
  17. it also occurred to me that the original plan was to contrast ted and nicole’s marriage with dani and bill’s, which makes sense dramatically. but keith’s not available, so they cast maurice and the audience responds accordingly. problem is that for a good chunk of the audience, it feels like a bait-and-switch.
  18. ahh. i’ve been evaluating the decision from the perspective of viewers, who are likely to be, shall we say, less than thrilled at having to wait for a week to pick up chelsea’s rescue.
  19. so, if the speculation that nuTed was the actor they wanted initially is correct, then it follows that their original intent was for ted to be seen as a loser. with original ted, their mutual connection (and attraction) between him and nicole was clear. i see nicole with nuTed, have no idea what she ever saw in him, much less why she married him. and what is with the blasting music that keeps popping on?
  20. Well we were discussing that in the soap news thread about the episode count and its potential for them to pull another repeat week. Go look see. having trouble locating that discussion. but according to the initial report, “the soap opera is roughly four plus months ahead in terms of tape-to-air, and two plus months ahead script-to-tape,” which mean that have enough episodes ready to air into early 2026. so i’m not sure how a week of repeats helps from a production perspective. and as for viewers, even assuming that chelsea gets rescued tomorrow, making people cool their heels after such an intense week makes no sense — at least to me.
  21. thankfully, it looks like this is going to wrap up soon, because i don’t know how much more i can take of bat [!@#$%^&*] crazy alison.
  22. which would mean that what we’re seeing now is how mvj always envisioned the character, which is such a letdown from original version ted. never understand what to make of that.
  23. i really loved that nicole set aside the antagonism she feels to sympathize — even empathize — with haley’s (likely) ‘loss.’ i was hoping that anita could have done the same with bill — genuinely acknowledge the situation at hand.
