On the flip side, there is ratings evidence to back up the Patch and Kayla on DAYS wedding claim, correct?

It definitely was a big week for Days. I don't know what you heard as far as numbers for Patch and Kayla's wedding, but Days did rank at the top for the week of the wedding and ranked 2nd for several weeks leading up to the wedding. So Days certainly had a significant boost - from what I saw it was somewhere between 5th and 7th place a couple of weeks before that.

  2. If those ratings did in fact happen, I'm surprised there isn't much evidence of it floating around, besides a few unsubstantiated claims on forums and unofficial websites. Especially, for this ATWT wedding that's supposedly the second highest rated episode for a daytime soap. I think for an achievement that significant there would be a news or magazine article or news video clip (like for GH during Luke and Laura) that could confirm that somewhere.

  3. Interesting that the household numbers for the CBS and NBC soaps are pretty consistent from 1982 and 1992. Even though the household rating is smaller each point represents a larger quantity of households in 1992. Clearly the ABC soaps were at a high in 1982, but AMC is actually outperforming its household numbers from 82 in 1992. Helps me to understand that soap operas were still holding onto their audience even in the early 90s. I think Days is also doing better.

Is this Pam vs Jenna or Katherine vs Jenna?

Love the way Sue Ellen casually says, “We were friends.  Why?” when Jenna asks if she and Pam we’re close.  You kind of get the feeling, “Not really!”

Watch Afton’s face throughout the clip.  People said Audrey Landers couldn’t act but she’s stealing the scene here with her reactions.

I haven't finished watching yet, but I thought Audrey did a good job in her role. On the other hand, Charlene was pretty awful. I remember those first scenes, I was like this can't be for real...how did she get this role? It was just so difficult to believe anything...it was so robotic and like someone pull the cord and she was uttering her lines. I know she got the role due to her connection to Larry Hagman from what I've read. To be fair, she did improve and her scenes with Larry were actually some of her best, not sure if it was an comfort thing or he expected and brought out the best in her.

I thought her relationship with Will was one of the better familial relationships on this show.

I think John should be a cop, and there should always be a mystery or something to investigate so he has a piece of the story, even if it is not “his”.  Especially since Roman is not a cop anymore.  Marlena can assist as a therapist, and they can also deal with life as an older couple.

Also at this point I would have one or two of Sami’s kids in town, maybe for school, maybe one of them is mad at Sami, and you could easily have them living with Marlena and of course they do not get along, just like Sami and Carrie.

This show is the only one left that could so easily settle into a small town vibe- The Spectator, the police department, the Hospital, the town square.  Salem is right there waiting to rebrand and it would work beautifully.

I think that would be interesting. Maybe one of Sami's kids is acting out and she ships them off to Marlena and John for the summer so the grandparents can get them together. Eventually, maybe a return from Sami as well.

  6. Someone mentioned and shared a video from an episode of GL where they were playing Madonna's Justify My Love. As I was watching an episode of GL on YouTube, I hear Janet's Diamonds in the background as Phillip talks to Harley around the 12 minute mark of the episode from September 19, 1988.

Actually a little further into the episode, you also hear Bette Davis Eyes playing in the diner. I guess I was thinking this was something rare....forgive me, I started watching soaps avidly in 2003. I forget that they actually had budgets at one time.

Robert Newman has always read gay to me. I mean, he plays straight roles very well but I've always found him erudite enough to play gay. (And he's hot as hell)

He's definitely hot...and one of the reasons I was interested in watching - not because he's hot but because I do enjoy him as an actor and he seems like a great person - not that his being hot hurts at all. However, I don't know if I'm all that interested but I will give it a try.

It's amazing how competitive GL was during GH's reign for much of the 80's and with sharing the same timeslot in a lot of markets. GH's ratings were quite erratic a lot of the time as there were sudden periods where the show dropped significantly, and mostly Y&R (but other soaps too) would outrank them or hit #1.

I was just thinking the same thing today actually. I always assumed that GL ended up declining in ratings because it competed directly with GH in most markets, especially in the 80s when GH ranked 1st throughout almost the entire decade. However, when I looked at the numbers GL actually remained pretty competitive with GH and was in the Top 5 for most of the early and mid 80s.

The soaps need to hire you on as a writer. These are great!! 👍😂👏

Ha, that's generous but thanks. I was bored and inspired by someone's post and started typing these up in a few minutes actually. I don't have much to do as these stay at home orders are still pretty strict here.

  10. I have tried many times in the past to research this very question, which episodes were highly rated for each soap but unlike primetime those numbers aren't easily accessible at least not on the internet. You're also talking about 200+ episodes a year over decades for the ones I'm most curious about.

I always wondered what was the highest rated episode of GL. Even the highest rated episode of each of the earlier decades 50s, 60s and 70s.

I have actually heard many times that the Steve and Betsy episode of ATWT was highly rated even on a TV special, but I have never seen actual numbers.

Just watched this the other day. I started watching a clip from December '83 and was hoping to find the next episodes but they weren't available, but I did find the one you posted. Pretty amazing. Love GA

I don't believe it had been decades since soaps had aired live. According to the Edge of Night homepage, Edge stopped its live shows in September 1975. As for the live Search episode, you can find it on YouTube. The show's video operator shared the episode a few years ago. He pretty much confirms it was a publicity stunt by executive producer Joanna Lee and says that the tape hadn't been lost. He says that he knew it was a historic professional moment for him so he asked the engineering department to do the control room audio.

Thank you. I assumed it was a stunt but I wasn't sure if it had been confirmed by anyone (officially). I did see the video on YouTube but didn't know whether it was real.

She's really in a onesie and a lucha libre mask.

I fell off a few episodes in, just lost interest. Same with season 11, but I did make it further with season 11. Last one I saw all the way through was 10.

    Thanks!

I read through the articles John and VF and I was surprised. I guess no one is beyond committing something so awful, but I guess it's always strange when you recognize the individual from a tv show.

JY was a terrible Lucky recast, I don’t care how hot he was.  I do think he got better as JR, but he did not fit in on GH to me.  At least not as Lucky.

Will Estes and Jensen would have both been much better.

I honestly only started to like JY on BB and even then it took me a while.

  15. I also have some questions:

After hearing about the live episode and the fact that SFT was struggling in the ratings, my first thought was that the live episode was actually a plan to boost ratings and interest in the show. I don't believe the tapes actually were lost, but instead this story was used to gain media attention. Somehow the tapes were gone and now this soap would have to do a live episode which hasn't been done in decades by this time. I also saw that someone posted the live show with the control room audio (not sure of the validity of this) but the video also confirms the fact that this was a ploy to draw interest. Does anyone know whether this has been confirmed in some way before?

Also, I read on the early pages that by the end of its run SFT felt old fashioned compared to the other soaps on the air. How did it feel old fashion?

Why would Genie specifically mention a private anecdote this forum only heard about from Jacob Young yesterday in an interview done years ago? Just because one person tells a backstage story at one point in their life doesn't mean all their colleagues are expected to retell it too - especially not years before they did.

Like JY, he was an inferior recast. (I doubt she could sniff out the serial con artist Stephen Martines became IRL.)

Given whats come out about SM i could see how she may have not responded to his personality

I do wonder if Lucky 2.0 would have been recieved if Will Estes had gotten the role instead of JY

    I would like to know...please share :)

Thanks for sharing these. I have been watching old GL episodes online and these are definitely some great scenes.

Ooh I do like the BB-GH and DAYS-GH cross-pollination you’re attempting there. If only the networks would ever agree to it though... 😏

Haha...I was bored. Honestly, I don't know if I would want any of this virus stuff addressed on the soaps (maybe GH). However, I'm all for suggestions of a time jump some have mentioned in the board.

Footage of the surgery, like a documentary.

Wow, wasn't expecting that for 80s TV.

I wasn't aware that JC had substance abuse issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if all those unexpected absences were stints at rehab.

  20. Here's what's been happening on your favorite soaps since the stay at home orders:

Y&R: Newman Enterprises refused to shut down causing uproar from employees and residents. In fact, Crimson Lights has been so empty these days, because they're practicing social distancing protocols, one customer or family at a time. Ashley brings Victor a hazmat suit to keep him safe. Jabot launches a new line of disinfectant perfumes.

BB: The latest collections were put on hold, but to prevent having to let employees go, Forrestor Creations has its workers sewing masks from the fabrics. Quinn suggests they have a virtual fashion show with the masks causing a huge sensation. They have orders from around the world. Wyatt catches Sally and the nurse dragging Flo, but they convince him whe was exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19 and when she received the results from the nurse passed out under stress. Flo wakes up but has amnesia. Meanwhile, Sally begins to panic saying that her condition is now more dire because she came into contact with Flo who was infected. Wyatt proposes to Sally and Wyatt decides they should get married right away as Sally's last wishes. They decide to have their wedding on Zoom with everyone on call even Flo who still has not regained her memory. As Carter officiates the wedding, something triggers Flo's memory and she starts to reveal the truth but the nurse who is hosting the Zoom call quickly intercepts and mutes Flo and then kicks her out of the meet.

Days: As the residents become aware of the spreading virus, they retreat to Melaswem to keep safe. John and Marlena discover that Stefano was actually seeking revenge on the residents of Salem in a plot that goes wrong.

GH: As mayor of Port Charles, Laura purchased masks for all residents from Forrestor Creations. Although, Cuomo's shutdown has eased the burden on General Hospital, they still see an influx of cases. The hospital is overwhelmed with patients causing several past residents to return and help the struggling hospital. Luke returns to inform Laura that the Cassadines are on the remote island of Melaswen and are attempting to hold the world ransom with the vaccine for the virus with DiMera.

  21. I notice they're airing David Kimble's death on Monday, when they just aired the masquerade as a classic Friday episode some weeks ago. If they were going to show them both, they could have just dedicated a week to that whole storyline and aired a couple of major episodes - tying them together with some bonus cast intros or pop ups of some sort.

I actually researched that entire storyline after the masquerade episode and looked up summaries and YouTube clips. I watched the trash compactor scene after reading about it in the summary, just because I was a bit shocked when I read it. Didn't find too many episodes aside from a clip with the missing scenes from the edited masquerade episode and smaller clips from the era.

I loved this show it’s first season and fell off I think around season 3 or so. The show just couldn’t recapture the magic of the first season. Sucks that Fox didn’t even give them a proper finale.

Same here. I loved season 1 and I'm not sure I made to to season 3, because I quickly started to lose interest during the second season...something just didn't feel the same. It was a really fast decline for me...I went from being so enthralled in this show like I haven't been for a long time to just not even caring. I wonder if it got better after season 2 or maybe I just gave up too easily.
