  1. The word of the day, ladies and gentlemen, is "shithole".
  2. I honestly hope that ludicrous twist is done away with.
  3. I think there's good being done - starting with Ronan Farrow's hard, dangerous work - but I also think we're reaching a tipping point where every bandwagon becomes suspect. My fear (for awhile now, actually, going back to like 2015) is we're reaching a point of early-mid 2000s Limp Bizkit/Jackass The Movie-style right wing backlash in pop culture, a la Trump, because so much of the 'woke' stuff in media and online is just performative bullshit and parlor games for coastal blogger kids trying to police material and play high school cliqueism. There are valid points made, but everything can't be viewed from the same gush/hate college freshman lens all the fücking time. And too much is. If everything is commoditized and hashtagged then it becomes a status symbol and performance vs. actionable change. And yeah, that includes the sexual harassment wave. When everything is seized upon and nothing is questioned or nuanced, my fear is this will ultimately lead to a lot of people throwing up their hands and just saying 'whatever' to sexual violence or any number of other issues. And yes, I include Rose McGowan's recent behavior in that furor. I think she's been through a lot and has every right to her voice, but I think people take everything she says as gospel at their peril. (Three Billboards is a pretty good movie about very difficult, ugly people, though - the overnight backlash over it is so high school, I've got no time for it.)
  4. I agree, but I also never thought Roseanne Barr IRL would ever vote for Trump. I don't think it's about trying to appeal to a Trump audience so much as there's no way this is something they can get away from given the nature of the show, its star and its setting. The two women are intrinsically tied on the show and in real life, so it feels dishonest not to dig into it. I'm willing to see where it goes. I do too. The thing is I think Laurie Metcalf* herself has recently said that she often sees Jackie as "Barney Fife", which is not encouraging. So it doesn't just come from the old writers. But I hope they tone it down. I can't see TPTB going for Trumpist Roseanne running over Jackie. And I do sense some buyer's remorse from IRL Roseanne as well. The other stuff - the adopted kid, etc. - don't bother me, as it's in keeping with stuff Roseanne talked about wanting on the show for years. And I think it's only right they still be blue-collar, especially now. It will likely be very imperfect, but I'm open to seeing how they handle all these various dissonances. * - Laurie Metcalf is amazing in Lady Bird BTW, see it
  5. I don't blame you. I'm not happy about it. But I'm going to see how it plays. As anathema as I feel it is to Roseanne Conner and what she stood for, I also think it's anathema to Roseanne Barr and what she stood for and claims to still stand for - but that same Roseanne Barr is now a Trump supporter, and those women, fictional and real, are joined at the hip. So I guess they have to reconcile it somehow. And like some other folks, I don't think it would be realistic if they didn't address it. This show is made for these times, and we all know there was no way Roseanne was going to go back on TV and not do herself - my personal hope is that the character is now chagrined by her vote (as Roseanne Barr increasingly seems to be despite her excuses), like a lot of people. But if the show turns into Trumpist porn I'll turn it off.
  6. IIRC they deSORASed Harris - she's 15-16 or something in this, I think. According to the article I hope that isn't broken down in the writing the way some of their past post-Season 5 arguments did, when Roseanne was always right and Jackie always wrong/an idiot. I can't see Sara Gilbert (who's producing) going for that, along with a lot of the cast and crew.
  7. Did these get posted? I'm all turned around links-wise. Somehow Mark Jr.'s fashion sense in his press shot has perfectly emulated Nana Mary/Shelley Winters.
  8. I had a feeling they were gonna bring Vicky back, since the showrunners said they hadn't liked their replacements on the original dumping her or Steve. I loved Vicky but prefer Matt to Steve by a country mile - John Brotherton is a comedy natural. That said I always knew it would go back to Steve and they really accommodated JB for longer than I expected.
  9. Echo Park is absolutly undergoing that, and IIRC it is/has been a Latino enclave.
  10. The Paul Haggis stories are certainly plausible, but at the same time I have to remember that he is a #1 target of Scientology these days since Going Clear. They can and would coordinate this.
  11. The bit about Dan and Roseanne lamenting the prices of their prescriptions is old school for the show.
  12. Oh lord:
  13. Ryan was meeting with Rosenstein today about the investigation. As I've said before, I wouldn't be shocked if Trump was pressed to cut a deal and walk back to his fantastic, amazing successful life as a businessman while declaring MAGA victory despite the haters.
  14. The important thing is they're ripping each other apart. That being said: Everything that's written there about Trump not wanting to win, deep in his heart, is what I've said since before Election Day. I also think many of us have said what he does about Mueller's targeting of Kushner and the money. Oh, and Eric has just accused Ellen DeGeneres of being part of the 'Deep State'.
