The funny thing is that the show doesn't even pretend that Fishman is a capable actor. He had more lines per episode when he was 8 than he does now!

He's better than he used to be; his scene with Dan last season alluding to his PTSD and talking about the VA was pretty good. I like him so much IRL that I'm fine with him getting more with Geena and the kid going forward even if he's a little dodgy.

Incidentally, future developments with D.J., Geena, etc. can be seen here:

    A BTS featurette:

  2. The press seems to like the premiere/revamp a lot, so I don't think it's that. I do think the tone of the coverage on the numbers has fluctuated and shifted from negative to more positive.

Social media, OTOH, has been inundated with right wing attacks on it by trolls/Russians. I think that will die down in time.

  3. More numbers:

Deadline's earlier story was also updated:

When the morning dust settled, The Conners clocked an early 2.3 rating in the 18-49 age bracket and averaged 10.500 million viewers, on track with the Roseanne revival season finale’s 2.5 demo rating and 10.579M total viewers in national Live + Same Day stats.

The Conners topped the night in the demo, while CBS’s NCS, (1.2, 11.70M) as expected, was the night’s most watched program (1.2, 11.700M).

The Conners stands as TV’s #1 series debut this season, topping NBC’s Manifest (2.2, 10.4M).

The Conners is TV’s top “new” comedy debut this season, going back over one year to CBS’ Young Sheldon debut coming out of The Big Bang Theory last September.

  4. I think Nancy appeared once at a ladies' poker game IIRC, talking about her latest girlfriend. I don't know if she'd appear again, as Sandra Bernhard was very vocally fed up with Roseanne's RL antics after what happened with the cancellation. I hope so.

I don't remember seeing Leon at all. Did that happen? I'd like to see him at least once, yes, for Mark.

  5. Moving this down so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle:

They're going there with Mark (Jr.) and it still gets me - yep, he's gay. I'm not sure I understand the Enrique and Joey situation though - what, are these seemingly str8 little boys vying for his affection? Does this happen in the fourth grade now? I'm old. Maybe it's addressed later in the ep.

Mary Steenburgen could be up for a guest Emmy for that one scene - Jesus. (And for people asking, no she does not always look/sound like that lol - she is made up to look haggard and is clearly playing drunk/drugged. IRL she is still stunningly beautiful.)

  6. This is raw as hell so far and as good as any dramatic ep of the original show.

I've said this before, but Lecy's comic timing has gotten wonderfully dry/deadpan as she's gotten older with that deep voice. She can still do Becky's abject, aghast horror at her family very well, but the dry stuff really kills me too. "I thought about what I said and it was insulting and dismissive. I see that now because I need a ride to work."

They talked about using Andy, etc. in Season 11 of the revival, and I assume we will see him eventually. Jerry, who knows? We know he exists.

Chuck at the restaurant with Dan! I am so glad they've given Chuck, Crystal, Anne-Marie larger recurring roles with the revival this year. Those characters fell away in the later seasons of the old show but they're back pretty often now.

  7. Having Crystal/Natalie West in the very first scene with the family as they downed all the food from well-wishers was a shock and very important to me.

The OD reveal was absolutely gutwrenching to watch. This is actually another reason I think people should watch some of Season 10, not just because it was good but because a lot of plot seeds were there - at least eps 2, 8 and 9, which further certain running plot elements like the opioid addiction, Roseanne's knee, Dan's business, etc. Marcy Bellinger was mentioned before this week.

Dan: "This doesn't make any sense. I fixed her knee." God.

Becky saying she can't handle the whole issue again after Mark was touching.

  8. Cast interview on GMA:

    Not surprising to hear that

    Becky is an alcoholic.

  9. The whole opioid episode is as good as anything from classic Roseanne. And the B-plot with Becky, Darlene and who will get Crystal's full benefits job was handled really maturely. Lecy also got some good one-liners. "You don't have to thank me. I didn't want to leave here anyway. We just got cream-filled churros. It's an exciting time." Darlene giving her the brochures for adult education and a hotel management degree is the most this show has given a shït about Becky in a long time - I loved that.

  10. Wrapping up Season 10 on a site which shall not be named on the eve of The Conners:

    • Jackie telling the kids 'ghosting stories' about men at the spooky sleepover as they wait to skype with D.J.'s wife at 2 AM from Afghanistan is peak Jackie in a way that they haven't done without Barney Fife crap in a long time. I cackled. Again, this is good Jackie work the same way Jackie with Bev in the prior episode was.
    • D.J. and Dan talking about his struggle with the VA, PTSD, etc. was surprisingly good from Fishman. I loved how he said he'd been watching Dan work on bikes since he was five and Dan offered to have him help restore bikes. "Welcome to Conner & Son."
    • The neighbor answering the door with a bat just after Jackie took Roseanne's was great. "Nice work, Jackie."
    • Pleased to hear the Al-Harazis will continue to recur as the newest set of Conner neighbors. The dynamics worked, including the scene in the store with Roseanne using her EBT card to cover Fatima's. It's sad that'll be one of the last glimpse we had of the decent Roseanne Conner.

Russ Tamblyn also has a cameo in the great Haunting of Hill House miniseries on Netflix (he was in the original film).
