  1. This is raw as hell so far and as good as any dramatic ep of the original show.

I've said this before, but Lecy's comic timing has gotten wonderfully dry/deadpan as she's gotten older with that deep voice. She can still do Becky's abject, aghast horror at her family very well, but the dry stuff really kills me too. "I thought about what I said and it was insulting and dismissive. I see that now because I need a ride to work."

They talked about using Andy, etc. in Season 11 of the revival, and I assume we will see him eventually. Jerry, who knows? We know he exists.

Chuck at the restaurant with Dan! I am so glad they've given Chuck, Crystal, Anne-Marie larger recurring roles with the revival this year. Those characters fell away in the later seasons of the old show but they're back pretty often now.

  2. Having Crystal/Natalie West in the very first scene with the family as they downed all the food from well-wishers was a shock and very important to me.

The OD reveal was absolutely gutwrenching to watch. This is actually another reason I think people should watch some of Season 10, not just because it was good but because a lot of plot seeds were there - at least eps 2, 8 and 9, which further certain running plot elements like the opioid addiction, Roseanne's knee, Dan's business, etc. Marcy Bellinger was mentioned before this week.

Dan: "This doesn't make any sense. I fixed her knee." God.

Becky saying she can't handle the whole issue again after Mark was touching.

  3. Cast interview on GMA:

    Not surprising to hear that

    Becky is an alcoholic.

  4. Catching up on two weeks of this due to work with the Sarah Sanders episode:

I liked that the show acknowledged that Murphy's big moment was myopic and grandstanding. She was right, but that wasn't relevant to the realities of the situation. It was right to take her down a peg both in the press room and with Avery.

Call me silly, but everything with everyone getting goofed on for being old still cracks me up - as did Murphy's drunk millennial secretary who reminded me way too much of the Gawker Media journos. And Pat's lines hit home, lol: "If this [van] has a supply of ramen, I'm giving my six roommates my notice tonight!" Frank's aging confusion and Miles' psychosexual stuff also crack me up.

The show walks a line between cartoonish wish fulfillment and valid messaging/fulfillment. It's far from perfect but I think it's more on point than it's given credit for. And frankly, broad or not I think it's needed and filling an important void. I do not think you can ever separate the politics from MB nor should you. They are essential to the show and always will be. If that means it lands broad sometimes, oh well. It's not like we don't live in broad times.

Meanwhile, I never did finish the first season of Greenleaf (and should) but I like Merle Dandridge a lot, so I'm pleased to see her coming aboard:

  5. The whole opioid episode is as good as anything from classic Roseanne. And the B-plot with Becky, Darlene and who will get Crystal's full benefits job was handled really maturely. Lecy also got some good one-liners. "You don't have to thank me. I didn't want to leave here anyway. We just got cream-filled churros. It's an exciting time." Darlene giving her the brochures for adult education and a hotel management degree is the most this show has given a shït about Becky in a long time - I loved that.

  6. Wrapping up Season 10 on a site which shall not be named on the eve of The Conners:

    • Jackie telling the kids 'ghosting stories' about men at the spooky sleepover as they wait to skype with D.J.'s wife at 2 AM from Afghanistan is peak Jackie in a way that they haven't done without Barney Fife crap in a long time. I cackled. Again, this is good Jackie work the same way Jackie with Bev in the prior episode was.
    • D.J. and Dan talking about his struggle with the VA, PTSD, etc. was surprisingly good from Fishman. I loved how he said he'd been watching Dan work on bikes since he was five and Dan offered to have him help restore bikes. "Welcome to Conner & Son."
    • The neighbor answering the door with a bat just after Jackie took Roseanne's was great. "Nice work, Jackie."
    • Pleased to hear the Al-Harazis will continue to recur as the newest set of Conner neighbors. The dynamics worked, including the scene in the store with Roseanne using her EBT card to cover Fatima's. It's sad that'll be one of the last glimpse we had of the decent Roseanne Conner.

Russ Tamblyn also has a cameo in the great Haunting of Hill House miniseries on Netflix (he was in the original film).

  8. I like Elizabeth Warren a lot but AFAIC this mess is weakening her by the hour. The DNA test will only play Trump's game and will do nothing to stop the alt right's attacks.

And the media will breathlessly carry it bc they hate 1) women, 2) progressives and 3) vocal progressive women. They've been hunting for a new Hillary to invest decades in and any patina of 'dishonesty' will do.

  9. Aussie TP podcast from a recent cast event suggests (at the 6:00 and 45:45 mark) that 'off the record' commentary at the event indicates 'an announcement' in two months...

Also has a discussion with Reflections (the TP oral history) author Brad Dukes - who is now doing a similar book on China Beach.

  10. A friend informs me Sherilyn Fenn is playing Raven's foster mom on DC's silly-looking Titans show. Any port in a storm!

    She's also doing, uh, this:

  11. My ex was bipolar. Roseanne is probably at least bipolar. I have some sympathy for the man he was, but this shît stopped being an excuse awhile ago. There's also a lot of free floating deep narcissism and misogyny in there - and there always was with Kanye.
