Y&R was always a joint venture between Bell and Screen Gems (aka now Sony), with Corday Productions owning a minority stake. Bell didn't sell anything to anyone.

Oh, I never knew Sony was previously Screen Gems. Thank you for clearing that up! So then I wonder why B&B was never owned partially owned by Sony as well…or was/is it???

Brad Bell owns The Bold and the Beautiful, so they have a lot more autonomy on how they can distribute the show from a rights perspective. Sony owns Y&R, so that makes distribution far more complicated.

Figures...I wonder why the Bells sold the show to Sony...

I wish they’d just sell the Y&R archives to Bradley. I’d never trust him with writing the show but he certainly can give us access to every episode from day 1 if he wanted!

Yes, I definitely agree!!! I wonder what it would take to get the show sold back to Bradley and what the terms of the original Sony contract were. Could you imagine seeing each episode from the first moment in perfect quality!?!? It would be just amazing!!! Think of all we haven't seen yet and have just either read about or heard minimal audio of...

  3. Don’t know if this has been discussed yet on here or not, but can somebody PLEASE tell me the reason why B&B has been uploading every single episode (by premieres) from the show daily and is now on episode 527 and Y&R hasn’t done it yet??? It’s truly so frustrating because we all know that every single episode of Y&R has been saved and is just sitting in archives with nothing being done with them. They don’t understand what a goldmine they’re sitting on.

  4. This user is uploading edits from the 70’s and early 80’s, I think of just storylines surrounding Lorie that we’ve seen before, but in somewhat better quality. There’s also opening and closing credits from the February 1, 1982 episode!

I'll say it one more time......whoever has either Foster Family edits 1973-1982, Kay and Jill 1974-1979 edits and Nikki (W/ Erica Hope and MTS) edits 1978-1981 better come forward, or just post the whole full episodes....haha.

I'm still waiting for the day this happens...it amazes me how much there is of other soaps from the 1978-1984 era (more so 1978-1981 and 1983-February 1984 because those seem to be the years with the least material overall, besides the stuff that's in the vault).

My dream come true would be if the following showed up:

    Full Episodes

-January 1978-December 1981 (mainly episodes featuring either Jill, Kay, Nikki (up until right before she meets Victor), Eve, Lorie (only from November-December 1981 involving Vanessa) and Julia)

-January 1983-February 1984 (mainly episodes featuring either Jill, Kay, Nikki, Lauren, Eve or Julia)

    Edits

-Kay and Jill edits (1978-1980, 1982-1984)

    -Jill Foster edits (1978-1981)

    -Kay Chancellor edits (1978-1981)

    -Nikki edits (1978-1981 (pre-Victor))

    -Lauren edits (1983-1984)

Peggy and Steve were investigating the cult

Looks like Jill got word at Jabot from Snapper about Liz

Oh how I so wish we could find more episodes or edits from 1980…it would be so wonderful to see these scenes and storylines played out. They must be out there somewhere!

  7. I love everything about this scene...it used to be on YouTube many many years ago when I first started going on there. It appeared in the vault, but this version is much better quality than the one in the vault.

I LOVE how devious Katherine is in this and how Jill is trying to play the innocent mother-to-be card. Ironic that Kay calls Jill devious, but that's how she's playing this dialogue out to try and get Jill to spill the beans...

Also notice how Brenda is channeling 70's Jill here, very soft and innocent.

Y&R was hitting #1 sporadically throughout 1979. It was a race between AMC and Y&R to second place for the 79-80 season (GH was always going to be first overall) only once the show went to an hour did the ratings drop and AMC took over, I think Y&R dropped to 5th by Feb 80. I say this as it make me think someone out there was taping the show in 79. Y&R would have had an overall rating in the 9's had it not slipped in the last few months of that season, meaning it had a big audience. Whether those tapes still exist, not sure.

Also there are Peer to Peer sites where you can literally find the entire primetime line up of original broadcasts for all three major networks starting in the 70's and countless hours of 80's MTV exists. Some people are tv archivists and I am certain soaps, which were hitting their zenith in popularity in the late 70's and early 80's must have been preserved by someone out there.

Wow, that definitely makes me think the soaps are out there. Unfortunately I think a lot of these people are either not interested in soaps or think they are already uploaded somewhere. Whenever I have attempted to interact with people who upload VHS on YT or on the reddit VHS page they always seem to think there is already a catalogue with all the soap episodes available. There was someone who posted commercials only from a 1987 episode (which we later got in German) and I asked them to upload the full episode on archive and they were surprised that it wasn't already out there (and alas never did upload it).

True, also we have to accept that many people who were old enough to have a VCR in the 70's and who would have taped a soap might have passed away and their family simply junked the tapes or sold them for re-use to someone who had no interest in soaps.

I bet there is someone out there. Like the guy in NYC who filmed all the broadway shows from the 50's onwards and has so much rare footage in his personal collection that even archives don't have.

Thank you guys so much for all of this info. I definitely think there is Y&R out there. Why the episodes haven't already surfaced, I'll never know. I wouldn't even know where to start searching for them, truly. Maybe I'm typing in the wrong search terms, who knows. I've looked at various trading/selling pages with no luck. You're definitely right about there may be people out there who have passed away and their tapes got lost in the shuffle or sold. Maybe I'm hoping for too much lol. I've posted on a few forums that I'm looking for Y&R from 1979-80 and 1983 and I've come up with no replies on that as well.

My best guess, from talking to people who made compilations like this, is that they did transfer the clips onto a new tape, but then reused the original tape that had the full episodes, because tapes were expensive back then. I am so puzzled at how difficult it is to find episodes of a popular soap like Y&R when there is so much available of other shows. Part of it is Sony being aggressive, but even if they don't show up on YouTube, you would think at least they would be around on tape and DVD trading sites.

That would be such a shame if they reused the tape with the full episodes, but I understand why they would with tapes being as expensive as they were. As far as the difficulty to find episodes of Y&R from the early 80's, I'm as puzzled as you are, especially for the early 80's (1983, specifically). There are plenty of episodes from that year concerning other soaps, especially on this site (https://soapoperas.webs.com/) (get a load of how much GH there is from 1980-84 and of AW and GL). It just makes no sense to me why we can't find more. I'm partial to 1983 because it's one of my two favorite years of the show (the other is 1979, just from reading synopses, hearing audio, and seeing some video). I sometimes wonder if there really is anyone out there that taped from 1979-1981 and 1983 that still has the full episodes.

I believe he is collecting old broadcast tapes from local tv stations that are dumping them, not from personal home collections. Some soaps end up in that lot, but seem to be rare. I think there is someone with a bunch somewhere, but if they haven't digitized them or are not storing them properly, chances are they are deteriorating.

I do believe the vault clips from 82 - 88 were full episodes that were edited down. In other words I do no think someone was watching and pressing pause and not recording the full shows as there were scenes out of order, so they were copies made from full episodes. If we could figure out the original source, maybe they still have them.

I wondered myself if the vault clips from 82-88 were from full episodes that were edited down. It would be amazing if we could find the person that originally taped them and they still had the original tapes! I’m certain there is soooo much great material to be seen that didn’t end up in the edits.

Well “mysterious taper”, if you’re out there and reading this, please consider finding, digitizing, and sharing the original tapes! It would be so much appreciated!

I think so. I mean, look at that Obsolete Video guy on You Tube who already posted a very rare Y&R episode from the 70s. Just from the teasers he's posted of end credits (in color) of various soaps, it tells me there's tons out there we don't know about that is in color and good condition.

You’re probably right, it’s now just about somebody like the Obsolete Video guy locating them. I’m sure there’s someone out there with a collection of Y&R out there from the years I mentioned. I think it’s more likely to find episodes from 1983, but really who knows after that 1978 episode was posted. I’m definitely hoping for more.

  12. Do you guys think there are episodes from 1978-80 and 1983 out there that people taped in some format (VHS, Beta, etc) that haven’t surfaced yet? Or is that too much to hope for? lol. It seems that there are more episodes out there of other soaps from those years than Y&R

  14. To the Angel that uploaded the full confrontation from January 1984 between Jill and Kay where Jill accuses Kay of sending the pictures, THANK YOU SO MUCH!😍 I have been looking for that ever since I saw it on YouTube over 10 years ago and then it was deleted! I've watched it like 10 times already! 🤣🤣🤣 Hopefully there's more rare stuff to come from the '83-'84 era!

    Me too!

Like it’s such a shame that it seems that episodes from 1983 are very very scarce. I’ve really only seen one full one and that’s the one where Patty shot Jack, and that’s already in the vault. I hope more surface someday, it truly was such a great year of the show. My favorite year, besides 1979.

@ltm1997 @Bundy1965 Thanks, glad you are enjoying them. I will be able to post again either tonight or tomorrow. So new stuff coming very soon

    Yay!!!😁😁

  16. I’m reading these weekly recaps from 1983 that @will81has been posting, and all I can think is, “GOD HOW I WISH WE HAD THESE FULL EPISODES TO BE ABLE TO SEE THIS ALL PLAY OUT!!!” I especially would love to see Lauren’s first few appearances, the complete Patty shooting Jack storyline, Brenda’s first month back as Jill, the scenes where Nikki confronts Eve and Julia (separately) after finding out about Victor’s “death”, and the full scenes where Lauren orders the sundae for Traci and in turn Traci dumps it on Lauren’s head! Can’t wait for the rest of the recaps! Thanks again @will81!!!

    Hi all

So I have started putting up the Jon-Michael Reed synopsis from Mar 21 1983 onwards. Just to make it easier I have tagged them as jmrrecaps1983. This tag will show only Jon-Michael Reed's recaps starting Mar 21, 1983. For those that only want to see them. Then if you want, just go to the URL and type   /chrono   and you can have them in order

I am soooo loving these recaps! Thank you so much for all your hard work finding and posting them! It’s so very appreciated! 😁😁I have my notifications set on there so every time there’s new stuff, it lets me know when it’s posted! It’s very nice to wake up to! Can’t wait for the rest!

So I have decided to start a tumblr. I am going to upload all of Jon-Michael Reed's columns and recaps, as well as Lynda Hirsch and anything else soap related I come across. Also any scans I eventually get done of the 70's soap magazines will go there too as well as (I hope, lol) the remaining SOD 90's mags that I have. I figured it is easier than opening several threads here. I put together a very basic one that I might redesign as I go along. Here is the link https://thesoapsofyesterday-blog-blog.tumblr.com

Give me a few days to start uploading stuff, I will probably just send a message once I have started putting things up, but it will be slow. Very slow, haha

Yay!! I’m so excited to start tuning in to the weekly recaps post-March 1983!! It’ll be worth waiting for, especially since 1983-early 1984 is my 2nd favorite era!😍

I do remember the full version of Jill and Katherine's confrontation about the pictures from Jan 84 being online a very long time ago, and it was better picture quality too, and a few other things were floating about at one point, but I do not remember full episodes from that era.

Though I do remember episodes from when Nikki was pregnant being about, a few of them, but that may have been well over 10 years ago, when I had no clue how to save them

I knew I had remembered correctly about the pictures scene. I sooo wish we could find it. Somebody must have it somewhere I’m sure.

    14 hours ago, BoldRestless said:

That's so sad that there's lost media out there from that era. Phillip's death scene (in English) used to be online too but I never saw it. Were these things on WOST or Soap Hunks? Surely someone out there has saved a copy.

There is a full episode around where Nikki is pregnant and goes to get an abortion but then can't go through with it after she meets a woman who had lost her child. (March 29, 1982 - in the vault).

Yes!! I remember seeing Phillip’s death scene too on that site! It’s so weird how it seems like the episodes surrounding his death in English just don’t seem to exist at all. I know they do, but they just don’t seem to turn up. I’m sure they will sometime, I hope.

    14 hours ago, will81 said:

The one I am thinking of (and it was several) was when Nikki told Kevin that Victor was the baby's father so he would reconcile with Carolyn. There were at least three or four episodes online from that time period. But this was early days of youtube and I didn't know how to save them

Damn, I so wish I would’ve thought logically back then and downloaded that stuff. But I was so wrapped up in watching it in the moment that it didn’t even cross my mind that it could be gone someday!

I know someone within the last few yrs had nearly every Y&R episode posted on youtube but entire thing was taken down.

Ugh, that’s such a shame they were taken down. ☹️☹️

Maybe someday there will be another Anonymous Angel who will upload those lost episodes/scenes! I'm still waiting for the Angel that starts uploading episodes from January 1983-March 1984 (right before Jeanne's facelift) :D

  20. Isn’t it true that there used to be some full episodes from 1983-early ‘84 of the show on Youtube over like 10-12 years ago??? I swore I read someone said there used to be full episodes and many scenes from that year on Youtube. I can almost remember seeing the full confrontation between Jill and Kay from January of ‘84 when Jill accused Kay of being the reason for the pictures being sent to her house. And it wasn’t the version we’ve seen from the compilation, it was the full unedited scene. I can also remember seeing a video between Dina and Katherine and all I can remember from it is Kay saying “Dina I assure you...”Maybe I’m just losing it LOL.
