  2. @JaneAusten Yeah, I have to give NYT credit for this one. Over $360 million dollars in the hands of terrorists and hundreds of civilians killed with thousands displaced. He told me that Hezbollah’s siege of Madaya had turned the town into a virtual concentration camp. “First people ate through their reserves of dry food,” he told me. “Then they began eating leaves and grass.” Ali Saeed held his cellphone up to the camera to show me photos of his children, one of whom fell on his head while running from a sniper and died soon afterward.
  3. My God: The cost to Qatar wound up far exceeding $360 million, but ultimately cash was less important than the deal’s political dimension. In order to retrieve its hostages, Qatar was made to negotiate a tightly choreographed population exchange in Syria, using the rebel militias it finances to forcibly uproot every resident of four strategically located towns. The transfers advanced Tehran’s larger goal of transforming Syria — along with Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen — into satellite states that will enshrine a dominant Iranian role across the region.
  4. I hope she isn't punished. Meanwhile, I'm hoping we have a small window to change course in the US. We're really lucky the military doesn't seem to be on Trump's side.
  5. I've had this same thought. Sometimes I think I'm being paranoid and sometimes I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. Just today I was thinking I wouldn't be that surprised to wake up one morning to find out that we've been cut off. Well, we do have some idea. We know they aren't afraid to jail dissidents and force women to have abortions. The way they have treated Tibet isn't exactly a recommendation either. We know they make America's xenophobia and racism look like child's play. I had a Chinese roommate my first year in college (early 90's). She was completely brainwashed. It was like talking to a Fox news addict. Facts would not permeate. At the same time she was incredibly intelligent. She basically learned English in a matter of months.
  6. The part about the media is hard to argue with. Hope he is right about Sessions.
  7. Sounds about right. https://www.vox.com/world/2018/3/13/16029526/rex-tillerson-fired-state-department Under Tillerson’s watch, 60 percent of State’s top-ranking career diplomats resigned and new applications to join the foreign service fell by half, according to a November count by the American Foreign Service Association. This country is out of control.
  8. This country is off the rails. I'm worried about what happens if (when) Mueller comes back with an indictment against Trump. How sure are we that he will comply or that there is anyone who can/will make him? I also wonder how many people out there will believe the charges are fake?
  9. I've read a few articles about this over the last year or two. You can pay minimum wage, but what makes serving worth it is the possibility of big tips, especially from wine. Every time paying serves minimum wage comes up the Scrooges of the world come out swearing they won't tip. Maybe automatic gratuity would work. Changing restaurant culture in this country won't be easy, but I hope it happens.
  10. ^ Yeah, I'm not getting my hopes up too much either. Partially because even if Abramson is right, how long is the case going to take? We could well be near the end of Trump's term by the time they get him. I'll still be thrilled to see him and his do time if that day comes, but he's already done so much damage that can't be undone.
  11. Please Lord, let it be.
  12. ^ There are still good people. Sometimes it just feels like the bad ones are running amok and getting away with murder. We just have to believe their days are numbered.
  13. ^ Thank the gods.
  14. ^ It is disgusting, but I guess not too surprising. These despicable people are not going to go down without a fight. I think eventually meaningful gun control will happen, but it's going to take a long time and more people dying. If Trump gets a couple more Supreme Court picks we probably won't see it for decades.
  15. Ugh. Let's hope this doesn't happen.
  16. I wonder how long it will take before the first student gets shot by a teacher "in self defense"?
  17. This thread. My goodness the corruption is bottomless. This one involves the tariffs and the UAE.
  18. Not sure what to make of this. I don't follow Texas politics. I guess I was hoping Texas was turning purple at the very least. h https://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/971238645440139269 t tps://twitter.com/Nate_Cohn/status/971238645440139269
  19. Yes. and they need to be held to account. If they get away with it, it will happen again and again in the coming decades.
  20. Me too. If there is a god, may he forgive me for not being a bigger person, but I love watching them go broke. Plus not one of them seems hard enough to stand up to what's coming to them. Don't do the crime, if you don't have a spine. These idiots really thought they could do whatever they wanted even at this level and not have to face the music. Unbelievable! Kushner is the one that stuns me. He saw his father go to jail, he knows it can happen.
  21. Like Vee, I'm over this show. I'll watch someday through streaming, but killing Carl was basically killing the future. Almost everyone from the start is dead. I'm feeling it's all pretty pointless. And yeah, they need to pay the woman. It won't keep me around, but it's only right.
  22. At first I thought this whole thing was funny and exactly what these terrible people deserve, but now I'm concerned this guy has truly cracked and might try to harm himself. I hope he has family watching out for him. Of course, then Mueller has to send the sheriff and force him to give up his info, if he won't go by choice. No mercy on that front.
