Look at Grey's Anatomy - it gets around 6 million viewers and somewhere between 1.0-1.5 in the 18-49 demographic in the usual overnights - including 35 day viewing numbers + digital, it actually grows into 16 million viewers and 6-6.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic. People are still watching, they just aren't watching it in traditional ways.Quote

It'd be interesting to know what the streaming numbers for soaps are at this point. I feel like the online versions of AMC and OLTL were just maybe 5 years before their time.

lol "temporarily". Personally I think Reeves is done. It could be to wrap up the story and write out Jack and Jennifer. Which would suck. Ashford shouldn't be fired again because of Reeves.

Of course watch them fire Matt Ashford because Reeves won't come back. We can't have nice things.

I have a feeling MR may be done permanently, too.I wouldn't be surprised for this to either turn permanent or they write the character out.

Melissa Reeves quit and has been replaced with Cady McClain! link: https://daytimeconfidential.com/2020/09/15/cady-mcclain-replaces-melissa-reeves-at-days-of-our-lives

Im really excited by this! I find Melissa Reeves to be pretty snoozeworthy. I look forward to seeing how Cady does.

OMG....Big news! I'm excited. I loved her on AMC. She may bring a fresh perspective to Jennifer.

Oh. I never cared for the Newmans. I always thought the Abbotts were more compelling family especially since the talent of the actors heavily skewed towards the Abbotts. To play a Newman you only have to be ok.
Adam, Nick, and Victoria stay front burner and Billy essentially served as an extension due to awful Villy.

I'm still bitter of the death of Colleen, too. That was a horrible writing mistake, IMO.

The Reg/Mary story had so much potential that was wasted.  Mary could have been snobbier after living for 17 years in Paraguay with a full household staff (but never learning Spanish).  However, the production staff seemed to pattern her after Denise's portrayal of Leslie on GH, rather than knowing her range from seeing her as Susan on Days.  There could have been a legitimate triangle with Reg and Vince, given that Mary had only known the benevolent side of Reginald and she might not have liked Vince's controlling nature.  Instead, Reginald instantly turned to mustache-twirling villain,  Mary immediately accepted life above a restaurant (and never asked for a monetary settlement from the Love's), and most of her kids who were yearning for her return left town within a year.  There wasn't even a stated motivation for Reginald to return to Bay City after living abroad.

That would have been a much more interesting story to play. it would make sense that Mary would have seen herself at a higher social level and struggle to become blue-collar even if she tried. After all of Mary and Vince's kids left, there wasn't much for them to do. I wonder if the writers ever toyed with bringing Ben back. He was on for such a short time he was pretty much a blank slate.

It also highlights the plot hole of Reginald, Donna, and the baby pictures of her twins.  Reginald shows a photo to Donna, she goes nuts, turns into Philece Sampler, that detail gets lost for a while, there's a rumor that Donna actually had triplets and Scott may have been one of them, then finally it is shown that John is in the picture which scared Donna because she feared that he could have fathered the twin.  Spoiler alert: John didn't father the twins, it is all a red herring.

However, if Michael left town after the twin's conception, but before their birth, why was John present when they were born?  I get Reginald spiriting Michael out of town after finding out that Donna was infanticipating.  That fit with reason that Michael never knew that he shared the twins with Donna when he came back to Bay City.  However, if Reginald was building secret rooms in the mansion, and hiring doctors to hide Donna in a special room at the hospital, why would he let John in to take a photo with the babies (see photo below from Another World Homepage)?

Reg and Mary ran away in 1969, so if Scott was meant to be the third triplet it also didn't make sense, because where would he have been stashed for the prior two years?  Also, how so after Cheryl was born did Mary take off with Reg?

Lots of plot holes in the Love/Hudson/McKinnon story. I can help but think it had to do with the constant change of writers at the time. I remember the rumor that Scott may have been the "missing triplet."  i personally think that would have been one baby too many.

I can't remember what happened to Mary and Vince...did they just disappear or formally leave the canvas? After the initial story, the show floundered in what to do with them.

The Abbotts have been slowly killed or written off since LML/MAB which is the shame because the characters are definitely better Nick, Victoria (since 2005), and Adam. And yes, if I was watching, I would prefer to watch PB,ED, BM than what the Newmans are offering.
I don’t care for Summer and Kyle. I find the characters and their portrayers to be mediocre from the bits I’ve seen of them.  They should marry and write them off the until the show is canceled.

I've also always enjoyed the Abbotts more than the Newmans. Sometimes the Newmans feel like the family that ate the show.

As has been mentioned before, the show really needs more characters that aren't filthy rich. We need people who are middle class or social climbers to balance everything.

Right now, almost everyone is super rich.

Spelling and NBC executives hope that Sunset Beach will be scheduled to follow Days of Our Lives, which has made a dramatic turnaround. "Over the last 18 months with that show, it's been unbelievable, going from being in the middle to the top," Ohlmeyer says. "If we can get that kind of performance from Another World-and we think we're finally on the right track there-we could have a solid three-hour block."

As much as I loved Another World, I did find it curious that NBC didn't schedule Santa Barbara or Sunset Beach after their top ratings getter. The post-AW timeslot was an extra tough one.

Even though it came seven years later after he was introduced, Devon on Y&R was found out to be Katherine’s grandson after the show gave him years of not much to do.

Even once Devon found out he was Katherine's grandson he floundered story wise and not much was done with their relationship. Only with Hillary did he show some spark...and we know how that went.

  10. I thought Iris injected some energy into the show when she first appeared. Later, the writer's seemed unable to write compelling stories for her. Lemay would have probably done a much better job writing for the character even if he wasn't thrilled with the casting.

I also noticed when Lemay returned Rachel got a bit of her edge back again. She had some great confrontation scenes with Sharlene and referred to the Frame family with a "You people" with disgust in her voice. But that edge also was lost once DS took over writing. After that, Rachel never really had a big story until she was paired with Carl.

Sami is GREAT without that albatross EJ around her neck. Sami has been so in character to me and it's really fun to see.

I'm glad Sami and Lucas are sticking around. Of course it's going to be without Will. I swear, this show ... lol

I'm happy to see Jan Spears back. Clever way to weave her back in, IMO.

I haven't enjoyed the show this much in a LONG time. Ever since Sami came back, it's felt like DAYS again. Her pot stirring is sooo essential, and the show is often flat without her. They need to throw whatever money is left to keep her around.

Love the scenes with Sami and Lucas. So much history between those two characters.

Jan has been a hoot. So, I hope she sticks around, too.
